CandleConcerned Eritreans in Vancouver, Canada are planning to remember those brothers and sisters who died in the Mediterranean sea by holding a candle night on April 30, 2011 at 4 PM.  Place, at hum park New Westminster. All Eritreans in Vancouver and surrounding area are invited to join the event.

It was with a great sense of loss and shock that we learned of the deaths of nearly 400 Eritreans in the Mediterranean Sea. The Association of Eritrean Journalists in Exile (AEJE) joins the families of these Eritreans in their mourning and bereavement. We extend our heart-felt message of condolence to the grieving families.

SeattleSeattle, WA (Paulos Misgena) –Eritreans residing in the metropolitan city of Seattle and its vicinity today gathered at the halls of the Eritrean community at 2402 E Spruce Street to mourn the loss of nearly 400 Eritreans who tragically perished in the Mediterranean Sea two weeks ago. The victims were believed to be immigrants mainly from Eritrea who have been trying to escape the Libyan civil strife that has been raging for a month now.

A group of around 50 Eritreans, all men bar one, yesterday held a peaceful demonstration in front of the Law Courts in Valletta, calling on the Maltese government and international community to help in the evacuation and protection of some 2,000 Eritrean asylum seekers trapped in Tripoli, as the crisis in Libya shows no sign of abating.

UN CallWe, members of the Network of Eritrean Civic Societies in Europe (NECS-Europe), believe that the targeted sanctions solely against the regime and not the Eritrean people are appropriate. As we are highly concerned with the deteriorating human rights situation in our country, we would have preferred to see the Resolution 1907 to have included the human right situation in our country as the compliance to lift the planned sanctions.

Eritrea LybiaIn mid January 2010, there was a concerted plan to deport Eritreans from Libyan detention centres back to Eritrea; there is no doubt that the Eritrean Embassy orchestrated this new horrifying development. This fact was made public at the time thanks to the cooperative work of Eritreans in Tripoli and in diaspora and with the help of all international humanitarian organizations, journalists and interested individuals.
