Al-Jazeera’s Jane Dutton on Friday confronted Eritrea’s besieged President Isayas Afwerki with questions which every journalist would love to put to a dictator. Isayas tried in vain to show that he was in control although his poor, hostile performance merely reinforced the notion that the UN sanctions are already having the desired effect.

We are demonstrating to thank the United Nations Security Council to have issued against the Eritrean regime resolution act. 1907 of 23.12.2009 and to demand the application of more sanctions to be respected the law and guarantees of Human Rights.

Rallying and encouraging our people to challenge the UN Security Council’ s Sanctions would be not only a luxury but an absolute waste of human resources, an irrelevance bordering, no pun intended, on the criminal.

Now that Christmas and the New Year celebrations are over, please remember those vulnerable people for whom the festive season was a time of extra suffering. From 29th December onwards, I have been receiving distress calls from those in different prisons in Libya detailing the latest breach of their human rights and the distressful situation that they were subjected to.

Since 2001 Human Rights organizations, civic society, journalists and NGO have published enormous number of articles, reports, press statements etc. on prisoners and prison conditions in Eritrea. In the mid-2000s ERHEA took the initiative to group together the resources of the various websites in order to make them more easily accessible to the public and thereby facilitate public awareness of the gross human rights violations being perpetrated in Eritrea. Since then, EHREA has built up a large resource that has been drawn upon by interested people and organisations from every part of the world.
