Fetsum: Light inside the darkness of the Vaccaroian movement of unification; Part I
Narrative: I will discuss brother Vaccaro’s latest message by assenna on April 20, 2014 (ሃገራዊ ጻውዒት ንኹሉ ኤርትራዊ ደላይ ፍትሒ ካብ ሓውኹም ካቫ. ዶክቶር ተወልደተስፋማሪያም (ወዲ ቫካሮ)) in two parts. There is only one reason that agitated me to share my opinion on his message in Assenna: It sounds very good to say the least. I believe Vaccaro has finally found the secret that rectifies the Eritrean quest for democracy. I believe Vaccaro has today defined his strategy clearly and there is now light inside the darkness in the Eritrean resistance that we should all do the best to enhance. Vaccaro’s very important message arrived at the moment I am trying to develop a formula for Eritrea’s transition to democracy based on the Liberian democratic experience through the Accra Peace Accord with few high caliber scholars which I hope will be complete within this year. This idea is now becoming popular among the Eritrean scholars (Few Professors have accepted it and already working on it). We believe this Accord is the best we can use to cultivate our own transitional formula out of and we will push it all the way to consolidate our democratic foundation on its premise. We will expose every effort in writing and I hope this time we can work together with the Vaccaroian team because the message significantly narrows the difference in between. Congratulations brother Vaccaro and I want to tell you that you are now at the heart of the problem closing the void that threatened your movement’s survival for the goodness of the Eritrean people.
Before I discuss the goodies in my next article, please first allow me to start with our basic problems in this movement because we cannot move forward without discussing them and reconfiguring our activities. As Meretse Asmelash once said, we cannot win moving slower than the enemy, needless to say that we cannot even do it moving at the enemy’s speed. We need to be a step ahead in whatever we do.
Comment: Wedi Vaccaro has effectively mobilized the Diaspora in my opinion making it ready for a more potent output through solid leadership and precise strategy which is desperately lacking in today’s resistance against the dictatorship. This movement can do a miracle and I think it is about to do according to the overall content of this message to be discussed in my next article with the remaining portion of Vaccaro’s message. I remind people to wait and see my final work on this message after reading the next article before diffusing their emotions in this forum. Please critically discuss the article’s content without jumping out of its conceptual circumference should you decide being useful to the Eritrean society. I am telling you that this is the best development ever in the Eritrean resistance for democracy and make sure you maximize your contribution towards, rather than becoming a problem.
Apparently, many people were optimistic about his movement and I remember doing many articles on this trying my best to advice him reorganizing his weakly organized movement for a better and faster result. He went ahead mobilizing our people in Europe and other continents of the world doing excellent mark in this regard. The movement showed a quantitative difference in terms of mobilization but was poor in quality in my opinion in the areas of at least defining the purpose of unity beyond overthrowing the government. It had no visionary formula to transit the society to democracy at its most emotional stage and it was apparent to stagnate at a point in the go unless something took place.
The movement before Vaccaro released this message.
The most obvious problems that we cited early on about the movement were the fact that it didn’t have a strategic focus and did not foresee the importance of involving the best independent Eritrean minds for democracy in the Committees. The committees were manipulated by individuals dependent on the opposition groups and may be on the government as well, for the most part, thus negatively infiltrated specially that he did not immediately invite the opposition groups into his movement to neutralize the visible infiltration effects on the movement. This was a terrible mistake in my opinion that hurt the movement’s momentum to the point of death. I am not going more than this on the topic that I discussed many times in different articles. I, however, believe that I have strongly reminded him about the phasing out momentum of his movement minus reconfiguration because I clearly saw the problem at that point in the experience yet from my own experience in the resistance vis a vis the people in the DC Committee. The effect of this scenario was too predictable to shout about which I did unfortunately we did not convince our brother on this and we the Eritrean people as a unit were condemned to suffer the consequence:
Case in point: The Washington DC committee was controversially born in November 24, 2013, the day Vacarro visited DC. I have said enough about the overall quality and intellectual capacity of the committee in few articles in the past and the mistake on having it composed of dependent minds on the opposition forces and even on the government itself. This Committee promised to do the following under the title “ህዝባዊ ማዕበል ንድሕነት ሃገር ዋሽንግተን ዲሲን ከባቢኡን” Assenna  February 14, 2014

Comment: I am not sure if my Amiche is creating the problem here but does not ህዝባዊማዕበል imply a massive and popular movement of people? There is noህዝባዊማዕበል in DC and everything is absolutely quiet. This committee as you read in its promise has actually assumed leadership of organizing every Eritrean activity in the DC area, which is fantastic but only if practical. Please allow me to comment on its specified roles in brief.
No one has heard anything from this Committee on its specified roles in (2-4) in front of many willing Eritreans to help out. There are educated Eritreans and elders here in DC that could have been used for (2-4) but nothing so far. Number 3 requires journals, newspapers, writers, website, etc. that the Committee has no scholastic aptitude and resource management capacity to do. Number 4 requires direct contact with people in churches, businesses, meetings but none so far. The specifications in (1-4) should obviously be the collective prerequisite for effectively managing number (5). Can you imagine a committee incapable of communicating in writing and even arranging a meeting with the people on agendas representing us in the diplomatic field? How can it do number 6 without contacting the people and offering services for cash? What budget is it talking about without meeting the people in the area even once? I am not sure what it is doing about number 7 although it may do number 8 within itself. I, however, declare that it has not done anything about number 9 and I have no idea when it will call a meeting to show us its linguistic versatility or requirement.
Literally speaking, the Committee members lied to the people by promising things they cannot provide and the people know this and are terribly disappointed. Keeping quiet is noble but exaggerating one’s capacity and role with nothing to show for is blasphemy. The question is why people want to be Committee members without any talent to provide: How can people play around with the destiny of a society for just personal image?
Am I talking nonsense here or something that makes sense? The answer to the following question may answer this question substantially.
Question: What may this committee have so far done towards actualizing its extraordinary promise going into the sixth month after its birth?
Answer: “Rally for Freedom in Washington DC, In Front of Israel Embassy on February 26, 2014 “
Comment: Can you imagine a Committee in DC, the capital of the world and the home of the majority Eritreans only doing one demonstration within at least 5 months of its erection? This is the only thing it has to show in 42% of 2014 as of today; God knows how many people showed up in the activity that they are tired of only doing. None of the promised items was performed as people here float around without any direction because Vaccaro failed to influence the committees promptly changing the situation for the better after we reminded him several times through emails and articles. I don’t blame him all the way because he did so much in a short time but I cannot help telling him that he could have done it a lot more effective. I had told him that I was willing to change the situation with his crew and we started something here and there towards this cause and was told that someone will arrange a meeting for me (via a member of the Committee I refrain to disclose) with an important person in his circle to strategize the reconfiguration process and that was the last time I heard from them. I am not saying they should have involved me needless to say that it does not matter who does it as long is the job is done but I am saying that they failed the movement themselves sleeping on its momentum for this long. Today, absolutely nothing is going on in DC about the Vacarro movement.
We have constantly reminded Vacarro probably more than any other media to revise his committees and rework their content before his momentum died out until we gottired of irrelevance and moved on. The main problem here was incompetent individuals in the committees are trying to lead the Eritreans and the result: napping on the Eritrean question with limited creativities of only making demonstrations, nothing otherwise! Yet, only one in 2014 in DC. How can the movement succeed with this type of debacle? Is this committee capable of doing anything worthy in August when African leaders minus that dude are supposed to meet in DC to discuss democracy with Obama? To be honest, I don’t think so and we shall see. There is no news on this from the Committee and I am not sure if they know such an event is going on, I apologize for my frank analysis.
Let me give you an example: I have been constantly advising individuals in the Committee that I was ready to immediately assist in at least the specifications (3,4 and 6) and that they can utilize me in music and speeches to raise money for their Committee. They don’t even give you a definite answer right at the moment of discussion and never raise the issue again. It is like talking to a deaf person. A dead environment with nothing encouraging is going on: they cannot even discuss issues written about them; absolute silence my dear people! We are talking about a totally lost Committee on what is to be done in the most important city in the world. I gave up and I am now independently going to start exposing my original progressive music on May the 2nd and they are welcome to attend if they want to. To be continued.

    Brother Futsum
You are the one primary who introduced these sociopolitical group presence in this forum with an inspiration but now with
accusation and criticism of failure . Myself I am lost in between to figure out about this six month old organization initial
foundation of so called consist of educated or intellectuals part of our society .
” Kab muhro aEmuro ” said it all from our elders sayings.
Lets confront any wrongs rather give up to others like before because the issue belongs to all of our concern .

    • asmerom April 26, 2014

I think this “kab mhro aemro” saying is not from wise elders or maybe not from elders at all.Sayings like this is taking us downhill. One that lack ‘aemiro’ will always be against “mhro”. As “mhro” requires “aemro”.This saying reminds me the EPLF leaders who live under constant fear of intellectuals. brother festum is highlighting the chronic problem that is holding our communities back everywhere.Brother Ahmed “Mhro” is good.

      • Mightyembasoyra April 26, 2014

        Ago Asmerom:
Mhro or knowledge? You know that sometimes mhro doesn’t translate to knowledge or I should say wisdom.

          asmerom
Forget Eplf leadership because they proved themselves that they are
          nothing but crooks .
But talking about AEMURO as they say ; A single conversation with a wise
person is worth a month of study of books .

        Dear asmerom
        What an excellent statement!

    Dear Fitsum,
your title is strong enough to attract our attention ”Light inside the darkness”

Brother Vaccaro in his limit but as Strong businessman he saw the request of his customers (Eritrean)… humbly, tangibly way and at the right time with others behind him who hears deeply their people’s loud cry, started His big Mission.
And the people joined to enjoy the Market and we are waiting for the next step and I assure that, in my side to throw a drop into the Ocean.

as you mentioned Committee, Washington DC, and others… they have marvelous & smart constitution… but what is the reason not to come in unity. If they see big bridge in between please Assenna let them speak and then we can use our common sense to know them if they have still sharp horn & long fingernails or they started to mend them selves little by little. B/c if one committee says only negative about the other. by saying ‘kab Tilian ykun ab Inglis konka… they do not know nothing!!’ (ድምጺ መድረኽ – Tuesday, 22, April 2014 on April 22 ab Dimtsi Medrek) I heared… I don’t know if I heared right, correct me please..I really shocked, I was not waiting from such kind intellectual’s. So please now our people doesn’t need Military Discipline… needs tolerant committee the one who struggle with himself to shorten his/her horn & nails.
By the way I advise you in your committee to invite Ladies, we do have good example ladies…

Unless we should be able to criticize anyone’s comment or action, we are moving nowhere or to the same place so called HGDF’s gate of horror. My take on this article is that Ato Fitsum is pointing out few critical points:
    1) This move has no strategy, so far. I find it true, so far – no concrete action, yet.
    2) We don’t know who the elected committees and to make it worse, how they get elected. Wasn’t this the system of Isays? We didn’t knew him that who truly he was and his plans? If we do, would anyone with the right mind (with the exception of few talking animals) prefer to be led by that lunatic criminal?
    3) For those few elected committees that Ato Fitsum knew, they don’t seem to be qualified to hold the position. He is also justifying it by their “no action” so far. Let’s assume for once that these individuals are well qualified, this article is a Reminder to them that “people are watching” and we are telling them to get their acts together. If they can’t handle those kind of inputs, they have no business to hold those positions. Do you know a leader who can’t handle any simple criticism while he dumps huge load of them to others? Hint: he is running our country to ground.
So, I see this as a positive criticism. Besides, what’s wrong if Ato Fitsum is volunteering to help? Shouldn’t we happy and appreciative, at least for that?

      Brother Mighty,
      Two thumbs up.
In short what you are saying is an intelligent preparation can make hard work much easier. Anyone who is leading a movement should have an answer/answers for questions:- What has been done before? Has it worked or failed? What do we need to do now differently? What’s never been tried before? and as such. Reminding someone you love please don’t forget this or that is constructive criticism; it is a brotherly reminder to work smart.
Dear readers, now, allow me to leave you with the following quote which I came across it some time in the past: “Those who plan for what is ahead first should check out what is near at at hand”

  • Kalighe April 26, 2014

Wedi Vaccaro so far has done a wonderful job. His call for national unity in the way he is doing it is unprecedented. His message is simple and purely nationalistic.
That said,it’s true that his movement lacks a well defined political agenda, and thus can be easily high jacked by Higdef operatives who may be posing as opposition activists to infiltrate it and eventually derail the movement.
All those who want a change in Eritrea should be involved and keep a good eye everything the committee is doing.

    • Genet-orginal April 27, 2014

      Brother kalighe
      I agree!

  • Truly Truly i say to you April 26, 2014

Mr Fitsum, it is not to distract your articles or i liked to speak out of topic, but acknowledging your writing talent it was better if your articles be focusing at actual news that held on inside Eritrea, instead of spreading your controversial philosophy. For instance i do not know weather you read this news at Meskerem net posted, it Says, “United Arab Emirates (UAE) Red Crescent Authority distributes clothing for 5,000 children in six Eritrean provinces”
Hearing such news I do not know what kind of impression created inside every Eritreans mind. But for me my heart was boiling from anger and disappointment ,not because i am against the aid or the donors , but because i see it this donation as nation embrassement it is. Responcible for that because i know Isyas regime self it is. Isyas embrassed us in Badme war, and now instead we Eritreans self help our suffering people in need , he embarassing us by Arab world as aid seekers. My self i do not see it such kind of help as positive since we Eritrean self have capacity to support our families relatives and citzens in need. Imagine! this time every Eritreans inforceing tens up to hundred thousands of dollars those by regime inforcing to immigrate his family and relatives members to support, but as the news indicated 5000 children to clothing it might be cover by 50, 000 dolars only. That means every Eritrean who is in western world could afford it. This and alike theme if you brought for debate it was better dear Fitsum, so that the evility of the regime to be more exposed, instead by your own philosophy waste yours and ours time. My self i do not like to see Eritrea like Ethiopia to be known in hunger and living in handout of other nation. I do not late any foreign religious ambitious individuals be it Christian or Muslims to instrumentalize my nation and people suffer for their own reputation, i rather ask to support us to topple the evil regime. As about aid we can aid our people self. This is the real humanity and support, the rest support is only ridicule!

  • Gideon April 26, 2014

    Mr Fetsum Abraham,
My utmost respect to you brother. You’re an invaluable asset to our endearing Eritrea.
I envy your energy and sense of commitment to the ideals you believe in. I won’t be
surprised to see you in a leadership position in a free and democratic new Eritrea.
The overall struggle of Eritrea merits the building of a new way of life, and a new way
of life requires a new ideology. It is very difficult to win support unless people relate
to a specific ideology, principle and vision of an organisation. And it is difficult to relate
to an organisation unless its ideology is clearly stated and debated and also put in a written
form and made available to the ordinary people. Organizing along ethnicity or religion will
have problem in mobilizing a modern society. Please continue with your positive and noble vision.

  • Truly Truly i say to you April 26, 2014

When i said every Eritrean living in Western country could aford it 50, 000 dolors to support, I meant those big family´s with four or five adult members if all work and lived at least for 5- 10 years in wealthy nations. This extra explanation i wrote it because those fleeing from the country not wrongly to understand my massage and not to be wrongly motivated i scared it is. Living in exile is not comfortable, there is no dignity , but if there is good governance eating one slice of bread in love and dignity living inside home is thousand times better than eating in exile fat without dignity. This is reality dear Eritreans in side home. I wish the evil regime dismissed or changes its altitude and we all return home!

  • Meretse Asmelash April 27, 2014

    Wedi vecaro Dr.
So far you have done a great job.
You have mobilized and provided the diaspora with great affection, moral, love and above all “HOPE” for many families whose lives are devastated by the dictator. May God bless your justified action.
It is true many of us have been waiting anxiously to see your next step. By now, I hope you had enough time to plan your work bit by bit and piece by piece. Your speeches — were/are people wishes, your goals are team goals and team goals are achieved by involving team efforts . Marching four by four or higher is better than lower number (lines)
If I were you I would pay close attention to anyone who raises her/his hand for help.
As you move to implement your next step you definitely need some communication, conversation, and even guidance at times from some people who are willing to help the cause.
Nevertheless, as you engage the next step you may need to check, learn of the strengths, weakness, experiences, hopes, dreams, of the other people who are involved. Let me make myself clear here : you need to network with them in clear communication.
In the past six months we have witnessed many unbelievable things. If not all, but many members of all groups were clearly involved in your inspirational movement which some of us suspect it: as an intent to hijack the cause. They all came together, sat together talk to each other around a table like they never have any differences. No one is against this type of good mood, but one might ask what makes it special this gathering unless otherwise some hidden intentions. If they could it now (getting together) what makes enemies at other times?
Bear in mind, I’m not suggesting they should stay away from this popular movement. As a matter of fact the sooner they join the national movement the better, however their involvement must be by invitation and equal to all. National movement needs all nationals to involve.
Your journey is our journey and please lunch out your action any time soon.
Adjust as you go and we are together in it.

With all due respect to your opinion, I feel it’s wrong to expect invitation from someone when the issue is a national one, as no one should have a monopoly on it. Any organized group should be open to all.
Please involve yourself without expecting anyone’s invitation, else those who want to derail a promising genuine national movement, will get chance to kill it the bud. Non involvement is not much different than indifference.
Let’s keep the big picture in our mind, we are all responsible for saving our country from a doomsday cult group.

    Dear Hagerawi,
I agree with your statement. But one thing I want you to understand is, when I say groups what i meant is opposition organizations not individuals.
