While the original inhabitants of Eritrea belonged to the Negroid race, it’s proximity to the Red Sea and Asiatic mainland’s has resulted in inflow of waves of Cushitic {Hamitic] and Semitic migration groups from Nile valley and Arabian peninsula The Cushitic groups entered Eritrea from Nile valley area while the Semitic groups are the last additions.

On 23 December 2009 the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted resolution 1907, imposing sanctions against Eritrea in response to the ongoing border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea, as well as Eritrea’s support to armed groups destabilising and undermining peace and reconciliation in Somalia, which the UNSC determined constituted a threat to international peace and security.

We, members of the Network of Eritrean Civic Societies in Europe (NECS-Europe), believe that the targeted sanctions solely against the regime and not the Eritrean people are appropriate. As we are highly concerned with the deteriorating human rights situation in our country, we would have preferred to see the Resolution 1907 to have included the human right situation in our country as the compliance to lift the planned sanctions.We, members of the Network of Eritrean Civic Societies in Europe (NECS-Europe), believe that the targeted sanctions solely against the regime and not the Eritrean people are appropriate.
