“How Old is Our Youngest Leading Official?” (Abdalla Al-Maqlush, the Saudi Al-Watan Newspaper, January 2011)
The quotation above was the title of an Arabic article I had the opportunity to read from the Saudi newspaper, Al-Watan, in January 2011. The article was written by Abdalla Al-Maqlush, the former writer of the column Opinion. Describing the courageous, frank and downright factual writer as “the former writer of the column Opinion” is due to the fact that he was immediately fired because he wrote and published the article.

It is time for Eritreans residing outside, especially those trained in the law, to start putting together charges against Isaias Afewerki for crimes such as conspiracy, murder, and treason. Enough evidences have been gathered to go forward and lay charges. Thus, a committee should be formed to oversee this task. It should be made up of Eritreans only. There should be no involvement of outsiders, except may be for technical help.

My country is at the crossroads. Throw your person into the mess, feel it, and talk to yourself. Ask what life would be like for you as a human-being without political dissent and difference in views, freedom of expression and rule of law, religious beliefs and worship…life without freedom of choice, the very personal choice on how to live and die… how would you feel about life without dignity?
