UNITED NATIONS — Britain called Thursday for U.N. sanctions against the tiny Red Sea nation of Eritrea for supplying weapons to opponents of the transitional government in nearby Somalia in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.

ASMARA, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Three Eritreans working for Australian company Chalice Gold Mines Limited (CHN.AX) have been killed in a shooting incident in the Red Sea state, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. Such violent deaths, uncommon in Eritrea, are likely to raise concerns among foreign investors in an industry many see as a lifeline to its agriculture-based economy, weakened by the global economic downturn and at the mercy of irregular rainfall.

Syracuse, Italy – At least 133 illegal immigrants from Eritrea arrived by boat in southern Italy, according to reports. Around 40 women and 15 children were among the group. Kenya revealed on Friday that it had deported an Eritrean diplomat “for security reasons” hours before the country’s Foreign Minister made an abrupt visit to Nairobi seeking audience with President Kibaki.
The diplomat is the second Eritrean to be expelled from Kenya in as many months on grounds of “security” — which is diplomatic speak for involvement in activities that undermine the host country. He was described as a businessman.

According to an Amnesty International report, about half of Eritrea’s population is undernourished as a result of the widespread drought affecting the country. Famine has plagued the country for nearly seven years, when the first major drought in 2002 bled the country’s food resources dry.
