Saudi Arabia executed a prominent Shi’ite Muslim cleric and dozens of al Qaeda members on Saturday, signalling it would not tolerate attacks, whether by Sunni jihadists or minority Shi’ites, and stirring sectarian anger across the region.

Hundreds of Shi’ite Muslims marched through Qatif district of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province in protest at the execution of cleric Nimr al-Nimr, an eyewitness said. They chanted “down with the Al Saud”, the name of the ruling Saudi royal family.

Nimr, the most vocal critic of the ruling Al Saud among the Shi’ite minority, had come to be seen as a leader of the sect’s younger activists, who rejected the quiet approach of older community leaders for failing to achieve equality with Sunnis.

Four, including Nimr, were Shi’ites accused of involvement in shooting policemen. But most of the 47 executed in the kingdom’s biggest mass execution for decades were Sunnis convicted of al Qaeda attacks in Saudi Arabia a decade ago.

The executions took place in 12 cities in Saudi Arabia, four prisons using firing squads and the others beheading. In December, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula threatened to retaliate against Saudi Arabia for any execution of its members.

Riyadh’s main regional rival Iran and its Shi’ite allies immediately reacted with vigorous condemnation of the execution of Nimr, threatening Saudi Arabia and the Al Saud with severe repercussions, in protests ranging as far afield as India.

However, the executions seemed mostly aimed at discouraging Saudis from jihadism after bombings and shootings by Sunni militants in Saudi Arabia over the past year killed dozens and Islamic State called on followers there to stage attacks.

Saudi Arabia’s ruling Al Saud family has grown increasingly nervous in recent years as Middle East turmoil, especially in Syria and Iraq, has empowered Sunni militants seeking to bring it down and given room to Shi’ite Iran to spread its influence.

The simultaneous execution of 47 people – 45 Saudis, one Egytian and a man from Chad – was the biggest mass execution for security offences in Saudi Arabia since the 1980 killing of 63 jihadist rebels who seized Mecca’s Grand Mosque in 1979.

Middle East is at war with ISIS and the timing for Saudia action to
divert the attention doesn’t make a sense . Don’t they realize that
the fight involved in Yemen had to do with Shia people ?
Now if HOUTI of Yemen benefited to win support from outsiders , they
are responsible to held the blame .
Issayas must think and analyze the dangers of his decisions in this
critical regional politics . It isn’t the relationship but the extent
beyond crossing line on their agreement make us nervous .

    • Semharr January 3, 2016

      Ahmed Saleh,
Do not be naive, you must realize that the tyrant Isayas, the ISIS and the Saudi leaders are all the same. They all have one thing in common, they are tyrants. they rule without law and they use extreame cruel tactics against their own people as well as others.

      • AHMED SALEH !!! January 4, 2016

I prefer to oppose Issayas authority based on logic of political theory
than unnecessary regional or religious arguments . To compare him with
ISIS and feudal Saudi government doesn’t hold truth even though we all
know his maniac reputation to eliminate opponents . So he was and still
is Eritrean breed psychopath dictator of our time nothing else .
I hope you don’t get offended if I compare him with his old friends
screwed politicians inside Weyane political circle who played their
part at invitation of foreign intervention on regions conflicts .

          Ahmed,

Ya Habibi …what do you want the Red Sea state Eritrea to do ? Do you think the Saui anti-terror coaltion would work without the involvement- of some degree or another – of our country ? Neutrality is an impossibiliy for us at this very moment.

          Greetings to Emmanuel Iyassu.

          • AHMED SALEH !!! January 6, 2016

            Suleiman
If Saudia was serious to fight terrorism they shouldn’t ignore their
Arab brothers who died and displaced in millions from ISIS attacks
that shocked the whole world in Syria and Iraq . But they want to show
their muscle to bomb Yemen with their air raid . Now to see Eritrea pledge alliance with this kind of government looks the work of desperate leader fo financial gain regardless outcomes that bring in near future .
Sunni-Shia kind arguments is nothing less other issues between
ARABS and PERSIANS that started at times of IRAN – IRAQ close to
10 years war . It is stupid move for Issayas to get involved .

Will the savage Saudi save their slavish servant in Eritrea before they save their own power base in the backward and evil Arab history and land? May the Yemenis get the power to remove and clean their land from the Wahhabins and their slaves.
May God help the oppressed Shite people in the oil rich eastern Saudi Arabia who have been discriminated, enslaved, massacred and treated like dogs by the savage Wahhabi clerks and the Saudi family for more than a century.
The only way the Shites in the eastern section of the Arabian Peninsula can regain their respect is to rise up and burn the Wahhabi dogs in the crude oil of the Shite land. The Wahhabis only understand force.
I thank my proud ancestors for saving my land, villages addi, languages, history and customs from the savage Wahhabi on the eastern bank of the Red Sea. I have more respect to my centuries old history more than ever.

    • Semharr January 3, 2016

Your centuries old history is being dismantled by the tyrant mad dog Isyas and his supporters savages Wahhabi.

Iseyas the uwala of Tembien has no business on the issue of Saudi or Yemen except to sell few hundreds of soldiers for hard currency.
Almost or all who go there will end up dead, and no one is going to ask about them even their immediate family.
No one even the dormant ministers are going to ask why Eritrea is getting involved, in other countries domestic affairs or problems.
Hundreds have died in Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia in the past, and now we are witnessing a repeat disaster on the making.
When is this sick psychotic going to be stopped for good?

    • Musa Ali January 4, 2016

He is going to be stopped only after one courageous, true eritrean, history maker finishes him.

    • Semharr January 4, 2016

      Berhe,
The tyrant Isayas has turned the whole Eritrean people into mice including me and you. So far no one dare to get close to this tyrant cat. The only hope is one day one Eritrean like Wedi Ali will finish this psychotic dirty cat.

  • Semharr January 4, 2016

    Berhe,
The solution is in our hands. United will win, divided we will lose.
The solution is not to approve whatever he does. For example he uses them, then trashes them. Example: the G15. So don’t let him use you.
Stick with your heritage, respect your provinces and get rid of his zobas. Respect your Higi indaba (your constitution) and get rid of his kangaroo laws. Respect your religion and don’t turn against other religions. Respect your nationality and don’t turn against other nationalities. Respect your liberation flag that stands for freedom, liberty and justice and get rid of the tyrant flag that stands for tyranny, dictatorship. Unite our people, our culture, our religion against the tyrant, mad dog and his blind followers. Do not be naive, you must realize that the tyrant Isayas, the ISIS and the Saudi leaders are all the same. They all have one thing in common, they are tyrants. they rule without law and they use extreame cruel tactics against their own people as well as others.

“It is stupid move for Eritrea to get involved .”

    Ahmed,

What you do not seem to understand is that not getting involved by itself is tantamount to getting involved. Eritrea can not run away from its geographic position.
