You may be shocked to learn the Chelsea Flower Show has been sponsored for the last nine consecutive years by M&G Investments – a key investor in a mining company operating in Eritrea that is facing a forced labour lawsuit in Canada. We are going to be outside the Show raising awareness again this year and would love to see you there!
The Show’s sponsors, M&G Investments, are a major shareholder in Nevsun Resources Ltd, which reportedly used forced labour in the construction of the Bisha mine in Eritrea. We want M&G to sell their holdings in Nevsun Resources Ltd to send a clear signal that forced labour is unacceptable.
Thanks to the global support on our campaign, we were invited to meet with M&G Investments. They said:
“We will continue to engage with the management of Nevsun to ensure it continues to improve human rights and employment standards, and to monitor its progress with the help of two independent research groups.”[1]
We welcome this commitment, but we want to see M&G send a strong message against the use of forced labour in Eritrea by selling their holdings in Nevsun. Help us keep up the pressure to see M&G divest!
This is our opportunity to ask the hundreds of thousands of visitors that turn up at the Chelsea Flower Show every year to support our campaign, so come along and take part!
By operating the Bisha mine in Eritrea, Nevsun Resources is alleged to benefit from the Eritrean government’s programme of indefinite forced conscription, a system that has been called a form of slave labour by the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and others.
This is why we are calling on you to join us outside the Chelsea Flower Show next week to help us hand out stickers and flyers in order to build friendly support for our campaign amongst visitors attending the event.
