Hyndburn MP speaks out on behalf of persecuted christians in Eritrea

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones spoke out to ask if the government was probing the issue of mistreated Christians in Eritrea. Reports say people are fleeing the tiny Red Sea state because of religious persecution, including raids

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones spoke out to ask if the government was probing the issue of mistreated Christians in Eritrea.

Reports say people are fleeing the tiny Red Sea state because of religious persecution, including raids and torture.

Mr Jones raised the issue on the floor of the Commons and quizzed the staff of the foreign secretary about what was being done.

He said: “I would ask the secretary when he last discussed the persecution of Christians in Eritrea with firstly the government of Eritrea, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the United Nations’ human rights bodies.”

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Mark Simmonds replied: “We raise human rights issues, including the persecution of Christians, with the Government of Eritrea at every opportunity and work closely with our partners to coordinate on these issues.

“In June our ambassador in Asmara raised the persecution of Christians with senior representatives of the Eritrean Government. “We work closely with the EU on Eritrea. In December last year, our ambassador alongside EU colleagues called on the Eritrean Government to release all prisoners held for their religious beliefs. We also expressed our concern about freedom of expression and opinion in Eritrea at the UN Human Rights Council.”

    Eritrea is one of the countries in which SUNDAY and FRIDAY are celebrated peacefully.
    We Eritreans learn everyday from the mistake of our neighbours,tolerance has limit.

        An Orwelian “sheep” called Belay Nega. 🙂
        BN reminds me of the lead sheep in Orwel’s Animal Farm “Hrsha ensesa” as translated by Eritrea’s greatest lexicographer tekie tesfay.

      Belay (wedeboy Nega),
      We are not talking about SUNDAY and FRIDAY. We are talking about humans who have lost their lives for refusing to recant their faith. Today we have more than 3000 evangelical Christians behind bars because of their faith. There are more than 20 deaths reported. Where is tolorance?

      To learn more about the persecution, please visit http://www.nim-er.org. You will be enlightned. Please
      stop joking people are dying.

        Eritrea is too fragile to welcome political oriented religions.

        • Zaul August 8, 2013

          The connection between Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Christian Zionism, Judaism and the State of Israel. I don’t agree with people being persecuted for their faith. But people should be able to criticize and expose all religions without mercy.

          Many people do not realize that Pentecostalism is the fastest growing Christian religion in the world with an estimated 497 million followers world-wide and expected to top 1 billion by 2025. This is a sharp contrast to the 13 million people who call themselves fundamentalists.

          It hasn’t gone unnoticed in Israel, who have wanted their share of this Pentecostal growth in their country. They see it as a serious economic contributor and a powerful political alliance.

          Pentecostalists have inherited and modernized the fundamentalist end-time system that believes the end of the world will come with the establishment of Israel as a geographical entity, with borders very similar to what was outlined in the Bible, the return of the Jews from exile, and Armageddon — a final war between Israel and all its enemies.

            Your comment is irrelevant to the topic of
            discussion. And I wonder why always stress
            to arguments which have nothing to do with
            Eritrea people . Losers with no shame at all.

          • Zaul August 8, 2013

            Ahmed Saleh,

            Who made you Gadi? I’ll talk about anything I find relevant. If you don’t like it? TOUGH! I never find any type of subtance in your comments except for “passive agression”

        • Zeray August 8, 2013

          Belay Nega,

          You are so myopic I am not sure you deserve a comment. But let me try. Eritrean population is the size of a city )let’s say Addis Ababa. With good leadership one mayor can administer it. But when we have people like you who have no human factor in their souls and begin to support this globally known evil government of Eritrea the suffering of innocent lives is being prolonged. For the sake of those who are languishing in prison for no fault on their own and for the sake of those who left their home and are standing homeless in the streets of foreign countries (because their country refuses to welcome them) etc.. I beg you to take a serious look at yourself and the facts and make a stand for human rights. Ize Wedihanka.

          • belay nega August 8, 2013

            Zeray

            “I am not sure you deserve a comment”

            You copying the president, because whenever is being asked about the useless oppositions he says “they do not deserve attention”

            “Eritrean population is the size of a city )let’s say Addis Ababa.”
            That is why the 80,000,000 people are telling you is not fair to be land locked by such number of people and the world is supporting them.

            ” I beg you to take a serious look at yourself and the facts and make a stand for human rights. Ize Wedihanka.”

            Do not worry,I already know that my gov is being challenged usefully to maintain Eritrea as a country.I will stand by him.

    Last monday I met a PFDJ supporter who went to Eritrea. She was talking as if she was an opposition element. She became very disgusted With what she saw and vowed not to ever og to Eritrea. Belay, you must awake from ur sleep.

      I waked up long time a go,and I know what exactly my country is suffering from.For your information unfortunately this is the best gov. Eritrea will ever have “ላምካ ዋላ አይትተሐለበልካ እምባሕ ትበለልካ”

      I just came from Eritrea. All what they write here is a lie.

  • ahmed saleh August 8, 2013

    The whole discussion diverted to one person attention.
    For sure Belay won on to this.
    About the above article , I advice not to jump on such
    kind of sentiment of religious tendency . We Eritreans
    know well our root problems and it is up to us on how to
    find the lasting solution for all regardless how others put it , we should come together in loud voice to condemn any
    kind of injustice inside the country.

    • belay nega August 8, 2013

      Ahmed Saleh

      “For sure Belay won on to this.”

      Is not a matter of winning or loosing,is a matter of exchanging ideas.And do not forget that the so called democracy you fighting for should be about challenging and being challenged.

      • ahmed saleh August 8, 2013

        Belay
        I already figure out that is your way of exchanging ideas . My reaction wasn’t directed to you but for those who took you as serious person to be
        challenged in discussions.

  • sidiabdu@gmail.com August 8, 2013

    Belay Nega reminds of many Eritrea friends I know. When ever a discussion arises about Eritrea, They agree that things are bad in Eritrea but when discussion about change of the regime is discussed, their comment is always the same: if Issias goes there is no body to replace him. I kid you not, they are so scared that they are so scared of the alternative, I am not sure why. It is like suggesting to an abused wife to go back to an abusive partner because the alternative is unknown. Belay, keep going back and hug the regime and get abused. We decided to pursue change from the current situation in our country. We don’ think there is any risk here.

      Ethiopians the cause of all this mess in Eritrea, do not have any personal problem with the president.They just call our ID a fake one,so is a matter of choice either to accept and live with the VIRUS or challenging them.
      The problem with you guys is that you judge the president for where he comes from, and cooperate with anybody at any cost.

  • Truly Truly i say to you August 8, 2013

    1 Truly God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
    He judges among the gods.[a]
    2 How long will you judge unjustly,
    And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
    3 Defend the poor and fatherless;
    Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
    4 Deliver the poor and needy;
    Free them from the hand of the wicked.

    5 They do not know, nor do they understand;
    They walk about in darkness;
    All the foundations of the earth are unstable.

    6 I said, “You are gods,[b]
    And all of you are children of the Most High.
    7 But you shall die like men,
    And fall like one of the princes.”

    8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
    For You shall inherit all nations.
