ADDIS ABABA – Djibouti on Wednesday called for the release of a military officer allegedly captured by the Eritrean army.
“Eritrea must release the military officer it captured on July 25,” the Djiboutian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry accused the Eritrean army of detaining the officer, who, it said, had been accompanying a Qatari military delegation to the demilitarized zone on the border between the two countries.
The ministry went on to warn that Eritrea’s failure to release the officer would endanger a Qatari-mediated peace process between the two states.
“The mediation process will be jeopardized if Eritrea fails to release the Djiboutian military officer, who was captured while accompanying a Qatari military delegation visiting the demilitarized zone,” it stated.
Since 2010, Qatar has mediated between the two countries following a war between them in 2008.
Under Qatari mediation, Djibouti released hundreds of Eritrean prisoners and handed them over to the United Nations.
Eritrea, for its part, has yet to follow suit.
“Qatar is also responsible for the capture of the Djiboutian military officer, since he was with its delegation at the time of his capture,” the ministry said, urging Qatar to pressure Eritrea to release the officer.
“It should also pressure Eritrea to live up to its international commitments on such matters,” the ministry added.

I agree with you. The man is beyond out of his mind. He has no regard for Eritrean life, all he cares about is his power. His way is what I am guessing he is trying to get. From day one he has denied it there is no conflict with Djibouti, all evidence are against him. I wonder what he is going to say now?

I wonder what is the political interst in capturing this officer? I think Eritrean seems to show its muscles on Djibouti, the smallest nation in the universe, as well as on Qatar. But Qatar is different than Djibouti when it comes to economical back ground

I totally agree with you.
The other day I ran into someone who asked me where I was from. I told them from Eritrea. Their replay was I know where Eritrea is. I know Eritrea because they have jailed more journalists than any other country in the world. The individual apologized to me for knowing my country on a negative way….but it is what it is…..that is the reality of Eritrea today. The dictator has done it intentionally.

It might be the smallest nation, but it is protected by French. Djibouti maintains military and economic agreements with France which provide continued security and economic assistance. The largest French military base in Africa is located in Djibouti’s territorial waters in the Red Sea. So Eritrea can not do this to bully Djibouti. If the officer was caught spying, Eritrea has every right to arrest him

This can be a national security issue, we hate HGDF does not necessarily mean we should support this kind of news. we do not know how exactly. The officer captured may be have been a spy. Tewkel, do you really believe delegates from Qatar would visit volatile area, i doubt it.

The so-called GoE may not be aware that even a minor case like this with Djibouti can be exploited by Ethiopia which seems to be preparing something against it. According to Indian Ocean Newsletter Ethiopia is pushing the opposition to be militarily active. Iseyas and his regime are putting Eritrea at risk. They have de-populated the country from the young, turned friends into enemies and made of national service endless slavery.
