We know in 2011 Ethiopia was planning to build refinery in Ethio-Dijobuti border and to construct oil pipeline from the refinery up to the border, while Djiboutian government will construct the pipeline from the port to the Ethiopian border and the Russian undertook the study, but for some reason it was not fulfilled.
And even before the recent peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea the Fairfax African fund a US based investment firm with partners from Asian countries plan to build USD 4 billion cost oil refinery in Ethiopia, indeed, the investors have evaluated several places including Djibouti where the oil refinery will be built and finally selected Awash town, 221km east of Addis Ababa. Awash is found in the Afar Regional State in the Ethio-Djibouti corridor where the national fuel depot of the Ethiopian Petroleum Supply Enterprise is located.
‘The Oil and Gas sector in Ethiopia, currently at a very early stage of development, shows good potential for development on the long run. Exploration for oil and natural gas is currently taking place in a number of areas including in parts of the Ogaden Basin in Southern Ethiopia, Afar in Northeastern Ethiopia, Southeastern Ethiopia, Afar in Northeastern Ethiopia, Southern Rift Basin, the Gambela basin, the Mekele Basin, Metema Basin, the Abay Basin in Northwestern and Main Ethiopian Rift Basin regions. Oil and natural gas discoveries in neighboring countries as well as the Calub and Hilala Natural Gas discoveries in the Ogaden region have created great interest in the above mentioned regions under exploration, and the government has now established a national Petroleum and Natural Gas Development Enterprise, to further develop the sector. Ethiopia with growing population they spend about 5 to 6% OF their GDP in oil and gas.
By all mean I believe Eritrea by providing an established refinery services and taxing from the pipeline and all the economic activities that comes from it around Assab is an economic opportunity for Eritrean people.
The Afar people and rebels are much more advanced and smarter than you
they don’t go round blowing up things that are of great benefit/interest to their people.
In other word, they are not stuck in your old days of blowing ups, destruction and mayhem.
The Afar rebels should be coming to your area to blow you up before you become functional.
The bell in Ethiopia is ringing positive terms i.e. among themselves and their neighboring countries, and we should hope hope the Afar and others who feel undermined in their own country will join the wagon of peace..
Nothing reflects our quality of life more than our thinking, For us it is time to think differently, to think about what is possible, and let us try to charge our thinking with positivity.
You say so much to mean so little. Why do you bloody only single out the Afars???
I don’t know if you and your friend Berhe have anything against the people of Afar? I hope not!
Sometimes I think it is helpful to say so much to be understood but still people understand it as so little.
I mentioned Afar to reply to Berhe regarding his comments on Afar.on blowing up .the pipe, what is wrong with that?
Hi Birhan,
But Berhe was NOT asking about Afars that needed replying, was he?? Reread his comment!
You must also be another Berhe (warmonger) who sees the peaceful Afars as just trouble makers.
I thought Berhe was meant that the movement of Afar who are fighting for their cause will/may sabotage the pipe in order to be heard their voice to a higher degree. And such action is common for any rebel fighters to hit a potential targets..
However, to consider me as a warmonger is not acceptabl, nonetheless, I am sorry!. Peace and harmony for all of us.
Hi Birhan,
I am very sorry if I offended you by labeling you as a warmonger (another Berhe)! From reading your replies and fair comment, I don’t/won’t consider you as a warmonger at all.
But be honest and just tell me when was the last time that the movement of Afar or the Afar rebel fighters sabotaged or blew up a pipeline or any other major project of importance????
There was no need to be asked such question because it doesn’t have any importance, out of respect to your question how about the following.
I think it was during Derg time [1975] the Afar Sultan Ras Almirah and his son forced to leave and the afar rose in revolt, burning Tendaho Plantation and many killing took plaec, and also they closed the highway that linked to Assab bringing a halt to Ethiopian economy.
I gave up on you brhan/tselimat. It seems sadly you are stuck in the dark 60s, 70s politics. Move on from your twisted weirdo old politics and don’t remain a hostage to a one sided stories. Get real.
Hi Birhan,
You must be a specialist of twisting words and translating them into your own convenience. I am not mad at all but I’d be just grateful if you could show me where I “requested” of ANY proof in my last comment! Please learn (take your time) to understand or grasp the actual message or statement before you rush and reply nonsense. Otherwise, all my respect & best wishes to u brother.
Your say: ‘If the Afar rebel fighters SABOTAGED or BLEW-UP a pipeline or ANY other major project of importance” Based on my understanding the word ANY I replied it. And with great respect this is my last post regarding the subject. Take-care! I hope in the future will exchange ideas of interest
Brother Birhan, I should have given up on you a long time ago! Thanks for the mini-debate.
Likewise, I look forward in exchanging “constructive” ideas of interest in the future. U take care too.

This pipe is unrealistic as Afar rebels will have a field day in blowing it up as soon as it gets operational.
