My advice to Assenna 13. 03. 2014
The website has problems. I am not talking about financial but about practical problems.
For the interest of many it is good that the website get helped to address or solve its problems.
In addition to this, it is a fighter website, if I am not mistaken; it has the tendency to be of all. So it has served us and we must help her in its hour of need. This it deserves.
If I am allowed to talk for a moment I would like to talk only about two things: editor or gatekeeper and lay-out.
Let us start with editor or gatekeeper. What is the work of an editor?
a) He or she is a gatekeeper ሐልላውማዕጾ
b) He controls the place of subject, verb, etc. in one sentence: e.g. ነብዐ ኢየሱስ ወይ ኢየሱስ ነብዐ Jesus wept.
c) He doesn’t pass misspelled words e.g. ህዝቢ ወይ
ሕዝቢ (pl. አሕዛብ)
d) He is very careful about double spelled words: e.g. ገበረ to do,
ገብበረ to pay tax.
e) He controls punctuation: e.g. አይትሕባእ እታ ነገር, ተዛረብ ግልጺ
Do not hide it, but speak clearly.
f) Usage: if the word is in common usage: e.g. the following terms, are always in positive forms.
ሳልላ, ስርዓት (ሰርዐ), etc.
g) To differentiate the meaning of different words: e.g.
ድሀይ(አድሀየ): ነበረ እታ ድሀይ ምእንቲ እዞም ብዘይ ድሀይ Be a voice for those who are voiceless
ድምጺ (አድምጸ): አነ ሰሚዐ ሐደ ድምጺ ናይ ከበሮ

ሩሞረ : ሐደ ሩሞረ ናይ ሐንቲ ማክኪና
a noise of a car.
h) A gatekeeper must know if possible deeply about our popular poetry: their histories, styles, etc. Plus about our proverbs. We must not forget many of our proverbs are articles of convention.
Now we are with lay-out (=ላይ-ኦዉት, ስንዳወ -አስሰናድወ-, ስርዓት )
a) Photos: it must be 4cm x 4cm passport-size photo. In case if it is family photo it can be above or at middle of the text. If they are a king-size as what is now they consume the attractiveness of the page. Plus they disturb the page because they lack harmony with text.
b) A photo must match with reality. It is not right to have a photo of a man of his 40th on the website, while he is living at his age of 70. This contradicts with Journalism ethics and standards. Clients of the web must be encouraged to support or criticize any man or woman not by age but by his/her ideology, thought, vision, principle, dream, etc.
c) Number of photos of one person on a page must be controlled. We must be very careful not to bombard clients of web with unnecessary number of photos (e.g. of late Wucchu now is on screen).
d) Assenna appears with any text on the website. I don’t know the reason behind this. If articles are sent, Assenna is becoming Web hosting articles. Question: how an article sent … can be said by Assenna …? I believe this must be avoided because it casts shadow over the right of the author of the article, etc.
e) A picture is worth of 1000 words but only if is handled correctly.
All these and others are part of a long term goal to make our people read and write according the rule of grammar. We must not forget that in Eritrea there are two things without a rule: a) a government without a rule of law and
b) Writing without a rule of grammar.
