The reason could be that girls are given priority if the difference between them is no as such.

No matter what this boy has to be grateful to Ethiopia.

What is an award? Already, he is a ‘WINNER’and no one can deny that. His achievement is going to open doors for him in coming days. At least, Amanuel was given an opportunity to attend thus making it this far. We should not fan this incident as an issue to create division.
If we are to talk, say something about those in their own land who have been denied the right to attend schools and universities. University administration missed by not awarding Amanuel. It could have been a means to show rest of world that the University practices inclusiveness.

Amanuel (Assenna)! You have posted this information. Are you sure about this case? I had followed the graduation ceremony on TV. The president of the university was even proud to announce that some Eritrean refugees are among the graduates. When I go back to Addis I will study this case if it is true. In my view being a refugee, the university would not fail to give Amanuel this award. Many Eritrean refugees have been given the chance to participate in their universities. Which one is more valuable? To give hundreds of students scholarship or one gold medal?

    • TwoWayStreet July 30, 2014

      Adhanom,
You seem confused on what to say. you raised two points. 1. The story might not be true otherwise the University would have acknowledge his accomplishment by giving him the proper award. 2. Ethiopia is giving many Eritrean refugees a chance to higher education, and if the university failed to give this guy a medal it is OK.

      My view:
-Eritrean refugees and Eritreans in general should feel grateful toward Ethiopia for providing a higher education to whoever needs it. This is very rare to find as a refugee, specially in Africa and other developing countries.
-The university should treat all its students equally; just like the teacher will not give different exam questions to a citizen and a refugee. IF THE STORY IS TRUE then my guess is, the decision to do that is political. In America, Canada and West Europe who ever performs better gets the award, whether black, white, brown, Mexican, Indian, Ethiopian, Chinese… because the decision is academic.

        TwoWayStreet ,

I don’t think that you have understood my short message. I requested Amanuel Eyasu to verify the case. So that we can write or say with concrete evidence. Who told you that I said “ if the university failed to give this guy a medal it is OK”? Wasn’t it better for you to put your own suggestion instead of giving wrong analysis on someone’s suggestion ?

        • TwoWayStreet July 30, 2014

          Adhanom,
You said, “Many Eritrean refugees have been given the chance to participate in their universities. Which one is more valuable? To give hundreds of students scholarship or one gold medal?” What does this mean?

          • Adhanom July 30, 2014

            TwoWayStreet,

This means that I have doubt on the case. That’s why I said I will study the case.Because I believe the university shouldn’t do that. Amanuel, our brother must be treated equaly.

          Adhanom,
Sorry this reply was supposed for your last comment but there is no place there.
Anyway, I have accepted your explanation, it was not clear to me at the beginning.
          Thanks for your respectful replies.

Eritreans will shine, what ever the haters want to say. I give the respect for the Addis Ababa university alawoing him to attend thier school. The dictator in Asmara is blocking Eritreans from reaching thier potentials. Ethiopian government is smart they are allowing students to attend thier schools/universities and getting financial compensations from UN and looks good in the eye of the UN and politicians for taking refugees.

In 1997 one dergist was chanlenged by a newtral Citizen (no dergist, no woyanist)whay she did she complained about the undemocratic rules of woyane because we all know how the situation were under derg?

Her answer i will never forget all my life. She answered in derg time we said ‘ No DEMOCRACY ‘, you got it!

So comming back to those who accuse Ethiopia for not giving the ‘desereved’ Gold to Amanuel is like behaivng the dergist woman. Tell us what Eritrea univercities done to Ethiopians. Otherwise the Applied Mathematical graduate students has his Gold already. Leave alone in Ethiopia refugee camp even if he were in Eritrea Sawa collage, this boy couldnt explore his potential. Applied mathematics is one of the Wonder of Applied sience. Any international univercity gives the boy free scholarship any time. Even the Ethiopian transport minster would love to hire him to solve the the 800 jungle of busses which couldnt be scheduled because of the Luck of People who have Applied mathematics degrees or masters etc.

So let us not always be on the war side.

    • TwoWayStreet July 30, 2014

      Tamrat,
You are mixing 2 things here.
      1. Ethiopia gave the refugees a chance to study. (Good every Eritrean should be grateful to Ethiopia)
      2. Your second case is not fair. Just because you were given a chance does not mean you can not be rewarded for you achievement.

Let me ask you a question. Can the teacher say, “Hey Amanuel, you got 90% on your exam but I will give you 80% because remember Ethiopia gave you this chance in the first place, otherwise you would be in the refugee camp?” Do you think this is fair for the teacher to say?

      • Tamrat Tamrat July 30, 2014

No, no. If you ask me personally the boy shouldnt be called refugee at all in the first place, after all he is an eritrean. He deserves like all the graduates full recognition. I am not aplauding for the mistaks done. I am attacking those who pick only the negative side of the Whole eri-ethio studnets thing.

The girl GPA is 3.91, so may the use an affirmative action to encourage the Ethiopians female on education.

  • Habte July 30, 2014

    Dear Assena
Before you post this information did you try to check with the university of Addis why this happened and what the reason was? Do you have any proof that he was denied the award because he is a refugee ? When we put sensitive information like this we have to be careful the scar that it is going to leave between the two people . First and for most as a reporter you must have the two side story and let the people or your audience be the judge , now where is the other side story from the university ? Assens as respected as you are please try to balance your story and play the role of bringing this two people together. You forgot even to thank the University for admitting our brothers to further their education and giving them the chance to make a difference.
    thank you

    • m July 30, 2014

no proplem we Eritrean pepole we have to say thank you to Ethiopia they give us more chance to study and we must say thank you

    • TwoWayStreet July 30, 2014

      Habte,
Fair point. Assenna could try to contact 4Kilo (ARAT KILO). It is in his finger tips. It is good to provide the two sides of the story if you can.
As to your comment regarding the scar between the two people, don’t worry, this is nothing compared to the bigger scar created during the last 70 years. And it is OK talk about fair and unfair games between nations, as long us you don’t try to solve it by force.

If we hide not do defend right from
wrong by twisting things on some irrelevant arguments , I prefer to
        walk away because contradicted
handling to cover up facts won’t
help us to look forward either be
        in Eritrea or Ethiopia.
