We Need to Re-tool Our Goal
A Critic to the Post by Daniel G Michael
Dear Daniel,
Ever since I read your post on EYSC page, I have been vacillating whether a response to your post is appropriate or not. This is because, on the one hand, I don’t want to betray my firm conviction that argument among Eritreans, small or big, is of no use; while the dictator is entrenched as ever. On the other, I have run – perhaps you too – into unnecessary squabbles with fellow Eritreans for simply voicing my objections or raising my opinion. Therefore, the fear of whether my critic insinuates your nerve kept me in check. In the end though, I felt some of the points you raised, though arguably interesting points, are nonetheless, subject to further critic and interpretation. My critic is therefore, solely on the points you raised and not the theme of the subject matter, and I hope you accept it in the spirit that it was presented; lest you consider it as an offense to your person. I will try to be concise and to the point.
Daniel,
You chastised as ‘fallacy’ the, “…. Ethiopia’s interest can be intertwined with the interest of the Eritrean people.” Though you seemed to negate this fact, you were short of denying our common interest, or simply obscuring your thoughts in other high sounding phrases, e.g. Weyane…
But here is where the fallacy lies my friend: In the murky waters of Eritrean politics, in the hazy atmosphere of either-you-are-my-friend-or-you-are-my-enemy politics instituted by the dictator, it is almost inevitable for us to entrap ourselves in this absurd school of thought. And here is where we Eritreans are completely detached from the realties of the world; where our understanding of geography and geopolitics is far and in between.
Sir,
If all the countries in the world were separate individual Islands dotted planet Earth, then geopolitics would have little or no value in this world and perhaps wars would have been less likely to happen. But this world was not meant to be like that.
It [the World] was meant to be: different ethnicities and nationalities were meant to live together, regions, – much less countries – were meant to be governed by geography and common interest and their ultimate make or break were to be determined by geopolitics and not by poor perceptions and unattainable sentiments. What is going on in Ethiopia affects us through and through. Ethiopia’s infamy or prosperity have the cascading effect regionally and Eritrea especially. Whether we liked it or not, we were destined to live together with our neighbors, the Ethiopians. Who said Eritrea’s failure is of immense benefit to the Ethiopians, except for Higdef, off course? Who can say with absolute certainty that Eritrea’s failure is Ethiopia’s salvation? All the maneuverings that you hear these days from Ethiopia has a direct correlation with geopolitics.
Daniel,
You made an amusing reference that Ethiopia’s “..refusal to implement the border ruling and hand over territories legally rendered to belong to Eritrea” and their “…desire to see an Eritrea whose nationalism weakened beyond repair” aligned perfectly well with the dictators “tunnel vision – whose only goal is the preservation of his power.”
Wow! I felt that I heard this from Higidef and quite frankly, we usually hear these phrases uttered from none other than Higidef’s point man, Yemane (Monkey). As such, if you prefer to align yourself with these naked lies, then on this issue, I would safely assume that you are indeed a strange bedfellow with Higidef.
On the border ruling, I am a bit dismayed that you are content with what the border commission shoved at your throat. You accepted it, wholly, what some jurists and technocrats sitting in The Hague bestowed you, with absolutely no regard their ruling might have entailed for your people and for Eritrea.
Back in 1995, the dictator plunged Eritrea into war with Yemen in what used to be Hanish Islands in the Red Sea, only Eritrea to lose these Islands – after we lost our best servicemen – to Yemen by the subsequent ruling. Fast forward to 2002, poor Eritrea found itself in the same ugly scenario.
Did you know that previously undisputed Eritrean territories were rendered Ethiopian by these Jurists – all foreigners, who hardly have a token of knowledge about our region?
Have you ever had the chance to study the border ruling? Did you know that the fertile Badme Plains, though Eritrean in sweat and blood, were nevertheless gone to Ethiopia – with the exception of the flashpoint town of Badme? In a ruling reminiscent of a textbook case of injustice, Eritreans who bled for Eritrea found themselves to be Ethiopian by the border ruling. These citizens had been crying to heavens for justice ever since. Evidently, the very fabric of Eritrean society was dissected by this ruling;
Daniel, If what I said seemed a hallow concept to you, Please do this:
Just spread an old Eritrean map on a table; then transpose the latest map on top of it. You will see what Eritrea lost in the last two decades under the Higidefits’ jungle rule and see if you felt some sympathy to your fellow Eritreans.
Sir,
One of the most blatant lies ever told by Higidef and some opposition figures is the one you mentioned, ”…their (Weyane’s) desire to see an Eritrea whose nationalism weakened beyond repair.” Such is the banal reaction of some Eritreans who have gone the extra mile in finding a scapegoat to their problems; and nothing delights the dictator more than when a rallying cry he needed coming out of the opposition figures. If you can present a token of evidence, I want to ask you: what did the Weyane do to weaken Eritrean nationalism? When do we Eritreans learn to confront our problems head on? Putting our house in order seems an alien concept to you, which is why you suggested the Weyane’s ‘ desire to weaken Eritrean nationalism‘ aligns perfectly well with the dictator’s ‘tunnel vision – whose only goal is the preservation of his power ” The dictator and his ever obedient dogs are the ones who weaken Eritrean nationalism my friend. Look at the exodus of the youth. The predicament Eritrea finds itself into has one and only one source: the dictator, whose ultimate goal is the annihilation of the Eritrean people and deliver an emptied Eritrea to his handlers.
Deniel,
One of the weakest links attributed to Eritreans is the inherent belief and willingness to submit to a person who has made a name for himself and to never strive to create that name for yourself; remember, enda Adhanom, enda Ahmed Naser etc… Perhaps out of this faulty reasoning that you accused some in the opposition “…caused the mouths of those who seek a short cut to power to salivate,” when Ethiopia threatened to remove a “one man government in Eritrea.”
First, how do you know their mouth to salivate? Or are you assuming? Well, that is why the great philosopher Francis Bacon left something for posterity to learn, “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content with doubts he shall end in certainties.
Second, by indicting the opposition ‘to salivate’ at the prospect of power in Eritrea, you glaringly indicated that you do not have a vision, you can not salivate at that prospect; therefore you can not be a leader. There is nothing noble than eyeing the prospect – by force if necessary – of snatching power from the jaws of the Eritrean dictator and saving your people. If you refer to history, that was what great men did.
Despite your indictment however, the Eritrean people and the opposition will continue in their quest for power. Have you heard the famous saying, “Indict a ham sandwich?” Keep away from its literal meaning, because the phrase has other meaning. It means a good prosecutor can persuade a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich. It points out to the stupidity of some people in the jury pool to indict a sandwich. If that was your intention, I tell you, you miserably failed; because our people need salvation at any cost and not acrimony.
Daniel,
What we need at this moment in time is unity not division against our mortal enemy. Neither do we need high sounding phrases like ‘masters of our own destiny.‘ If that were true, the dictator would have gone a long time ago; because the opposition is dysfunctional as ever. We do not need EYSC or EYSNS, but united front against Higidefites and their dogs. Not withstanding the current infighting, the Libyans showed us what a united hand could achieve. As such, Eritrea’s salvation will only come with the complete dismantlement of Higidef and not through dialogue.

Tesfamichael,
What a wonderful and timely article, prices and to the point. This Daniel is a bare faced lair who is worse than staunch HGDEF supporters. He is HGDEF tool in disguise he work tirelessly to derail to any achievement scored by opposition. He is sick or one of those paid agents their sole objective is to weaken the opposition camp. He and his fellows associates are a deliberate spoilers who don’t care about Eritrea and Eritreans. They repeat HGDEF words and blame outsiders to all ills in Eritrea. They have no shame what so ever to cry fouls about Ethiopia and wayane where as those wayane are the first to acknowledge our Eritrea independence. Because HGDEF said wayane is the reason for all the mess, this hopeless individual come with same excuse to deceive and confuse Eritreans. What he miss is that this trick is out dated and Eritreans in general know who is their enemy. Eritrea is at its critical stage whether she can survive as nation or not and badme is its lease concern. If this guy is truly believe bedme is the cuase to this abyss then he need to go back and check what is happening in Gurhu sernal and part of hazomo which has been taken to Ethiopia. Badme badme is a trick used by HGDEF and repeated by its agents. This guy is not different.

From any opposition group, it is barely to find any individual, who can say our (Eritrean) problem is Wayane or CIA. The dictator Isayas is the route for all our problems. But how can we solve our problem is a big question mark to us.I believe Eritrean problems must be solved by Eritreans and if we need any assistance it should be according to ourrequest. We can get any advicevfrom any part but the decision should be taken by eritreans. Now what i am seeing is that we are only advisers for our own concerns and decision makers are others. So this articles view is more or less supports woyane to take great role for bringibg change in Eritrea. For the case of border, demarcation must be done with out prior dialoques.I understand there is a lot of matters which need discusssion on border demarcation but it should be only after demarcation.

first lets secure about our survival as a nayion. Don’t you see the nation is draining while you and co are repeating demarkation demarkation while you have no idea where as a nation is heading. Why is so important badme while the entire nation is desparsing in all direction. Do you have a single evidence Ethiopia interfer in our affair.none but you and your associate decimate an substiated fear to drag the tessistance to take longer time. You ageda is clear to most of us eritreans. Go to bologna and dancy.period
Tesfamichael Kidane August 25, 2014
Hara, where did you find in this article the ‘decision makers’ are others ?

If you see the map very closely then you see one of the greatest blue high way for the world market. All countries near to it are just blessed if they only know how to use it. But the greed of collonizers and some of us who carried their legassies have chosen to abuse it than using it. When we abuse it then those who are abused by it turns themselves to enemity then the reslut would be war and intrigue and thus where we are now. this must be stopped and the sooner the better.
So what we need is now People who can see out of the Box then. The Whole nations of the world Depends on buying and selling goods or services. And one of the greatest high way for this market is near Our nose. So put this higly inflated nationalism of Ours (both ethiopians and eritreans) aside and give reality a chance. 23 years is enough.
If we understand the Message of Tesfamichael then any leaders or Groups who dont understand the geopolitics of Our area or who deliberatly ignore it then they are the greates obstackls for Our Development and then Our missery.
In short if Mitswa port serves the Northern ethiopians and eritreans gets what they deserve then i dont see where Our nationalism gets hurt. In Ethiopia it is on the verge of creating a 94 million consumers except some negativ trend of parsialities based on ethnicity. We work on that. We say boldly yes for each ethniciy Development NO for benefitting one or two above the others. So if Eritrea does this, Somalia does this, Sudan does this kenya has done this allready, then where are we then in 10 years from now. Recuriting military service men to vanguard a dictator. No way!!
Giving excuse you put the border hear or that With out caring the People affected by the line is hypocrisy.
Many eritreans belive the west and some Arabs nations are punishing Eritrea only to help Ethipia. Absloutly wrong. Anybody who is messing the blue high way is messing With the very lively Hood of many nations. You mess With that you dont know even who creat Your missery at home. You dont even know why Your own People leave for the uknown With their weapons or fighter. So we have to try to play along With out selling Our souls. It can be done. Other wise we end up blamming the rest of the world for Our all incompetency.

Extremism and ultra-nationalist are habitually the last refuge of the insincere. They exert a lot of energy in trying to appeal to our sentiments. They always find easy following from among the uncritical and illiterate masses.
Tesfamichel’s informed, logically developed, critique becomes necessary to clarify issues and ideas that some inexperience and self-serving present-day politicians want to use towards their own political goals. I hope Daniel takes stoke from such positive criticism. On the note of sovereignty issue let me offer some input for Daniel to take serious consideration.
The late Meles Zenawi had repeatedly said that the Border Commission had ‘awarded us’ big territory that clearly belonged to Eritrea and had pointed out how the regime failed the people of the districts in question. Daniel should check record books in the history of EPLF and how the areas part of the Hazemo plains and the people living in them have paid in everything they belonged so EPLF can thrive. The people of Tzorona and its surrounding, where Berhe Tsada hails from, were also fertile grounds where EPLF drew its recruits throughout the 1970 and 1980. Because they have always been inaccessible to the enemy ground troops they were heavily bombarded by Ethiopian air force since 1976.
Both the Border Commission and EPLF have made historic blunders. In its amateurish surgery, the BC drew an arbitrary line close to the town Tsorona and curving out a large expanse of fertile ground and awarded to Ethiopian. The land has been in the possession of a district that had its customary law written in archaic Tigrinya six centuries ego.
Let me add and educate Daniel, by way of sharing my rich experience, in Mid 1970’s the undisputed Eritrean hamlets and fertile farmlands were very convenient, hospitable and resourceful to EPLF in its bid to offset ELF influence, which also compete for control of the area. In these hamlets and the surrounding were stationed all EPLF support units. It was a place of retreat for the veterans such as Dr Eyob G.Kristos, Ibrahim Afa, and Beraki G.S, Kuboni and many other. And the hadamu of these gebars sheltered Wedi Flansa, Wedi Haile, and Bitwoded to heal their wounds after their successful military operations deep in Tigray. Also under the shades of these areas EPLF had its battalion meetings to conspire who should participate in the first Organisational Conference of 1977 and who should be excluded.
The ‘Woyane’ rallying cry has continued ad nauseam and it is indeed, as the writer proposed, it is time to rethink. This is particularly relevant to such aspiring politicians like Daniel. I recommend that they secure enough knowledge and sensibility. No, Eritrean is expendable to save the face of tyrants and bigots. We should start to redress the historic treachery that EPLF had committed on those who paid heavily to the revolution, no matter how disappointing the outcomes have become.

Sanjo August 23, 2014
Dear tesfamichael and Tes,
I read your critics about Daniel’s article. You both have criticized him for his opposition to see Ethiopians to lead the removal of Higdef for their conflict of interest in Badme. What is your idea to solve the border issue between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Would you accept the BC ruling as is or would you request it’s review? Please explain yourself.
Thank You
Sanjo
Eritreawit August 23, 2014
Sanjo,
Is it true the Dictator himself gave Badme to Weyne while he is making sure to stay in power forever (23). can any one ask him why he did that?. Ethiopians are leaving a better life than our people thanks to thier smart leaders. Who is going to care for our people? Oppostion leaders in Ethiopia; i eurge you to get out of there and join the Serawit Hidri who is trying to fight the Dictatorial regime with the help of Eritrean people. A nobel thing to do for Ethiopia is to help them with out interfering in thier busines. Then DECTATOR WILL GO DOWN, WE TWO NIGHBOURS WILL LIVE IN PEACE.
Fact-is-Fact August 23, 2014
Sanjo,
for the sake of argument not that it matters anyways. But, if Eritreans like yourself truly grasp the reality that Eritrea & its people find themselves in, then, only then, Eritreans truly would have, in absolute urgency, come together in picking up the survival pill first & foremost and then once exctiniction & total disaster are ensured to be reversible then working on the pill that brings lasting remedy is wisdom. Your argument defies that logic:
“Would you accept the BC ruling as is or would you request it’s review? Please explain yourself.”
If you have been following the Ebola case, while African citizens are dropping like flies, the two Ebola infected Americans were brought back to life by the “experimental drug”. “Experimental drug” for their survival, eha?
so at this juncture of Eritrea’s life & death, would you really, from your comfort zone, prescribe the “experimental drug” for eritrea or just let her die like the West Africans ordinary citizens who were not provided this “experimental drug” that saved the two americans?
If you or Daniel G. Micael and many others like you do care for sure for Eritrea first before your thoght-process, conviction, hypothesis, analysis, then you would have picked the “experimental drug=BC ruling” before seeeing Eritrea & its inhabitats dying at the death bed, at the blink of your eyes. It is happening you’re seeing it! Yet, your, each of you who bicker & entangle things for whatever reason, strange illogical logic is denying her the “experimental drug” to survive. Instead your haterd to “weyane” or simply “ethiopia” has imprisoned your logic. What is interesting is that the majority of Eritreans, even the seasoned ones simply are detached that whether they like it or not that they will live by the side of Ethiopia for better for worse. At this point in time, it is the Ethiopian people that are living in relative dignity in their own country. comparing to Eritreans in eritrea, it is Heaven. In the eyes of “obscured, educated, informed” diaspora Eritreans, however, ‘tnfer aytnfer Tel iya .. type of dereq blind cruel stand.
who is hurt – who is the collateral damage of your illogical twisted minds? the people of Eritrea in eritrea and the nation that cost so much lives. The onlookers must be just stunned by these strange minds of Eritreans. How could you talk about what pill to take when you have a “experimental pill” that rescue you? pills & politics have no garuntee of positive results, b/c they are man made. those who care about present & future handle it in the way a successful cardealer handle its customers
Tes August 24, 2014
Thanks Fact! Nothing to add. Sorjo I hope Fact give you an appropriate answer to your question.
