The 17/09/2016 London Refugee welcome march: The voice of the voiceless in Action

By Petros Tesfagiorgis

The day was Saturday 17 September 2016.  A colleague and I members of Eritrean Refugees Support Association in the United Kingdom ( ERSA-UK)  made it to the 11.30 am appointment with Migrant and Refugees Communities Forum (MRCF)  at Marble Arch/Speakers Corner.   MRCF is one of the organisers of the Refugee Welcome March.

Our appointment with MRCF is to pick up T-Shirts with a slogan “I am a refugee”. These shirts were allocated to refugee groups in order to be on the first row of the march. Together with Syrians, Somalis, Ethiopians and many other nationalities we were 2 Eritreans in the front row me and Feven Hadera.   Feven works tirelessly for the welfare of Eritrean refugees and she is a frequent visitor to Shemelba & other refugee Camps in Ethiopia.  Last Easter, she with others prepared food that fed 500 refugees in Calais/France known as the “Jungle”.  The refugees expressed their satisfaction to see fellow Eritreans care for them.  Lul Seyoum the director of iceras   and Andy Gregg a member of Eritrea Focus were also in the crowd behind us.

For a short time, I got out of the line to look for Paulos Mikael –Eritreans for Unity and Justice” legacy of the late Wedi Vaccaro, Who prepared – the placards and slogans?  However unable to push back further I returned to my place.  I learned later that Paulos’ train was delayed. It was impossible for him to make it to the front line.  However to be anywhere in the march is good enough.

On my way to look for Paulos, I passed through a sea of people chanting slogans.  I was overwhelmed with excitement.  They made my day.   I was in a cheerful mood.    It was fulfilling and inspiring to be part of people who share the same value and campaign for justice, peace and love for fellow human beings.  I felt singing “give peace a chance” a popular song during the Vietnamese war in America.  Yes, the people of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia ought to engage in mass movement against war in the Horn of Africa. War takes the lives of innocent people especially women and children. The alleged claim of the threat of Ethiopian Invasion has become an escape goat for the Eritrean Government – to hold the Eritreans people hostage and deny their human rights. Today in Eritrea, there is no rule of law, anybody could be imprisoned without being charged and incarcerated indefinitely. The worst is the indefinite national service which gave rise to the exodus of refugees into exile. They are being robbed of their future unable to exploit their God given potential wasting their life to do forced/slave labour.

Here are some of the slogans

Choose Love than hate” “I stand with refugees”

“End the drowning in the Sea.”  The life of refugees matter”

”Open the borders, Fight racism and Islamophobia”.

“Every Child matters. Get children to safety “

It was estimated that there were over 20,000 marchers. They came by coaches, trains and cars from all over Britain.  In its evening news the BBC said 60 religious groups – Christians, Muslins, Jews and other denominations and  50 organisations such as human rights activists and NGOs like OXFAM were present.

The march reflected the authentic voice of the voiceless.  An activism in action that puts pressure on the British Government to accept more refugees stranded in different places such as the “Jungle” France, Bulgaria, Greece etc. and those languishing in refugee camps in Sudan and Ethiopia.  In her speech at the UN General
Assembly   in New York  on 19 September 20916, the British  Prime Minister Theresa May  showed reluctance to accept more refugees and preferred to help refugees in the first country of entry  which is the neighbouring countries and mentioned Eritrea in particular.  I hope the All Part Parliamentarian group for Eritrea (APPG) raises more questions at the House of Commons.

On the other hand, there is a move on the part of the Eritrean regime and its supporters to divert the   sympathy of the international community and keep a blind eye to the pains and sufferings of the Eritrean people.

This is a move to mislead the international community that things are well in Eritrea. Yamane Gebreab, the advisor of President Isaias is touring Europe beginning from Germany, seeking financial and diplomatic support. For the regime the life of thousands of Eritreans drowning in the Mediterranean Sea – languishing in many prisons in Egypt, Libya and Israel and those languishing in refugee camps in the Sudan and Ethiopia ,  many of them develop mental health problems, does not matter.

The attempt to hoodwink the international community is very will orchestrated and coordinated. For example on 20 /09/2016 there was a seminar in London which focused on education in Eritrea: the leaflet distributed says “Presenting the higher education, leadership, research and real case studies.” I did not attend the seminar. But I can say, yes there is an education system in Eritrea, yes children go to school.  But what type of education do they get in the schools?  Does it prepare the students for a better life?   The last school leaving year at the end of year 11 grade, all the students are forced to go to Sawa military training camp to complete their 12th grade.  In the schools there is no conducive academic environment – it is a military yes man settings? The only University – the Asmara University – the students of whom tried to have an independent students union – was closed.  Its chairman Kessette was imprisoned and now in exile. After the students finish 12th grade they serve the degrading indefinite national service that gave rise to the influx of huge number of refugees to exile. According to UNHCR by mid-2015 there were 363,167 Eritrean Refugees and asylum seekers all over the world.

What is amazing in the London Seminar is that there was no speaker from the Diaspora in the UK who went through all these educational process.  Instead they rely on foreign experts who has a scant knowledge of Eritrea or who have vested interest such as Mary Harper from BBC whose report from Eritrea kept a blind eye to the repression in Eritrea.  Her report followed by protest letters one from 6 Eritreans organisation in Diaspora, the   BBC has yet to respond. The others speakers are expatriates and I don’t think they know very much of Eritrea. They may be innocent professionals sharing their expertise.

The only one who came from Eritrea is Professor Tadesse Mehari and nobody expects him to risk his life to tell the truth. In fact there is an inbuilt mechanism in the school system to control the students as well as the teachers.

The just seekers cannot allow the urgent human crises Eritreans are in to be exploited by those who seek to make political capital out of human misery. Indeed it represents a formidable challenge. What are the reactions from the Diaspora justice seekers?

To continue

Syria belongs to the people of Syria but it is ruled by brutal dictator.።
Zimbabwe belongs to the people of Zimbabwe but it is equally ruled by a dictator.
The same for Eritrea : Eritrea belongs to Eritreans but the independence victory is snatched by a brutal dictatorship።.. There is a solution and you are part of the solution especially if you are committed: by : participating in activities that ends oppression and brigs democratic change in Eritrea..

It is not politicians who will end oppression. It is the radicals, with the stink in their clothes, rebellion in their brain, and hope in their heart and direct action in their fists.

      David Bowie: Singer 1947-2016:

Unfortunately today we Eritreans don’t have that kind of fire. We are all talks and little action more often among ourselves.. And no body gives freedom in a silver plate.: Petros

Despite the topic is is refugees I see the show down is between the big mouth rat who want to adjust the stolen grain in one side and in another way who tray to defend it.

  • Z. Hagos September 23, 2016

Most of the world governments and people know by now that Yemane is a good pretender and deceiver. No one believes what he says about the Eritrean refugees and the living conditions in Eritrea. To see him lying is disrespect to himself, his friends and his family. By the way, looking at his face, when he tells lies, his body language tells that he is never comfortable with what he represents, the regime. I wonder if there is anyone who knows why Yemane is doing what he is doing. Is he blackmailed?

Since a liar is always a coward, Yemane’s friends should step up to encourage him to be himself by injecting some courage that can help him to stand up to Isayas’s dirty politics. Yemane should know, as a government official, that it is better to be a denier than a liar, unless he does not know the difference between the two. He should also know that his defenses should be truth and not lies for intentionally lying about his people’s condition is a crime.

“End the drowning in the Sea.” The life of refugees matter”

I say Amen to that. The only realistic option for ERitreans ,specially the youth is being a refugee eventually to aquire the citzenshup of the host country.

I pray my people to get out of the new babylon /Eritrea safely and save themselves and their famijy.Let those that started the criminal gedli lament for the fake country. I care about your life.

  • Tsehaye September 23, 2016

I find myself asking why is that Africans ans especially habesha (Eritrean & Ethiopian) people should continue to suffer so much in this age when the world has become a better place to live comfortably for the great majority people of this small world? What is the sin we have committed (apart from the evil and criminal savage moslem ELF ghedli) for God to punish our people in such a harsh way of being a refugee for life?
Jews people asked the big question when they were in Nazi concentration camps, why God had forsaken its chosen people (not that Eritrean people are God’s chosen people, far from it) They had no answer, and at the end, they decided to thank Him nevertheless, and wait for the Day of Judgement, which finally came and their enemies suffered a crushing defeat. The ways of the Lord are beyond our understanding and we should nevertheless thank Him and wait for his justice to shine on our habesha Christian people.
That day will surely come, and it will be a beautiful day, because the day after a storm is usually more beautiful than all the other days. But first, we have to get rid of the evil-ghedli culture and the savage wannabe Arabs from Eritrea before the big redemption. Last but not least, habesha is an alliance of brotherly people against barbaric Arab and savage evil Islam barbarity that are terrorizing our civilized world and our refugees in particular.

    • Z. Hagos September 24, 2016

Tsehaye, you yourself, lost civility when spoke against others. Secondly, leave out religion when speaking about habesha because habesha includes both christians and moslems. Thirdly, don’t expose your criminality by speaking about committing crimes against others. The eritreans, both moslems and christians, were victims of the christian haile selassie and the communist mengisto. Fourthly, you have to acknowledge that the word habesha, nowadays, refers to northern ethiopia only: to include tigrai and amhara only. Fifthly, know that competition may turn brotherly people to enemies, as the case is between tigrai people and amhara people. Sixth, putting your hands off of Eritreans will lead to eritreans taking their hands off of ethiopians.

    Commentary,23 Sept 2016
The subject matter of the Article is about welcoming Eritrean refugees. In the consequential context, the Commentators Desalegn, Z.Hagos and The Habesha gave their respective views. I believe their commentaries deserve our attention without sentimental or emotional or vociferous outbursts.
Desalegn took a prism questioning as to who owns Eritrea! Daring and admirable question. Writing it in Tigrigna makes it even more effective and worthwhile for national dialogue – not just for privileged Western educated citizens
    Z. Hagos preferred to concentrate on one Government official. I am afraid this singular topic may not go far in comprehensive dialogue about the nation – though it is a good example of individuals [educated or otherwise] who become enablers to Dictators, completely oblivious of the shameful history that they are leaving behind for their off springs, relatives, close friends and people.
The Habesha expresses his disgust, coupled with deep sorrow, and the following suggestion: “… I pray my people to get out of the new babylon /Eritrea safely and save themselves …” No body likes to abandon his/her birthplace but desperation and deeply hurtful circumstances leaves no option but to join sane sanctuary. We are all here in safe sanctuary for various reason – the main of which is the purgatory nature in the birth place.
I salute all three above – for their daring honesty.

Discussion It is my firm opinion that the Land which was named “Eritrea” by colonial masters, is in deep sociological problems, starting foundationally from that cancerous disease called RELIGION, Christian/Moslem, to other irritants like region, race, tribalism… etc. Unless the age old fundamental problem of the consequential sociopolitical problems arising from RELIGION is solved, Eritrea will never enjoy the status of Nationhood. Instead, it will always remain counting the string of ‘colonial powers’ over its Life. In an interdependent world, and in the absence of realization of any sane action, I believe, Eritrea’s destiny will always be determined by geopolitics and forceful exodus of its young people onto various countries around the globe. Desalegn quotes VOA that “161000 Eritreans” have already immigrated to Ethiopia! We leave the classification of their denomination to individual’s guess and implication
    .
    Issayas Afewerki Abraha
Needless to say, it is so easy for all of us to use Issayas as an excuse for the trouble we are in a mess. Issayas as an individual, pursuing his Life, has manipulated the entire Eritrean people – unbelievable as it may seem – to accomplish the agenda that he set out to do, with vengeance. He knew the psyche of the Eritrean people deeply, from humble Eritrean to the most sophisticated Western educated doctors of philosophy! In plain words, astonishingly, for twenty-nine years, he manipulated his way to the very top from which he became the master of his innocent three to five million subjects. Issayas, as an individual, has accomplished what he set out to do – REVENGE. The key point is this >>> Issayas knew, and knows, the characteristic and specially the make-up of the “Eritrean” Society. He used that knowledge effectively and ruthlessly to the maximum. If knowledge is to be translated into academic degrees, then Issayas Afewerki Abraha deserves one hundred and one Ph D’s. It serves nothing to go into tantrum and insult each other for saying so. Please remember: we have some eighty-eight opposition parties, deceivingly all singing the same battle song for twenty-five years – from a safe distance, of course! At a closing ceremony of 25 years of rule over his subjects, Issayas bid them well until the next twenty-five-year ceremony, at the age of 95 years! THE END

    • k.tewolde September 24, 2016

Indeed rezen,he did a number on the society, nobody knows the Eritrean psyche like the tyrant, and he used that power to brand his image in the frontal cortex of those who came in contact with him and they couldn’t still shake him off. Those of us who abhorred him from the beginning and fought him fiercely, the conformist society looked at us as odd balls and regurgitated us with impunity.the sad thing is the Eritrean society till today cannot diagnose its ailment properly and treat it and the saga continues.

  • rezen September 24, 2016

    Dear k.tewolde,
OK, let me have it out! For some time, I wanted to say something to you but thought that it may sound frivolous. Here is how it was cooked in mind >>> I imagined A General Assembly Meeting of Eritreans some where around the Globe (except, sadly, Eritrea itself) to discuss, in a civilized and mature manner the future of Eritrea and come-up with Resolutions for the benefit of the Eritrean people in harmony with our imperfect interdependent world. Within that hallucination I see myself in the Assembly enjoying the mature, rational, fraternal, serious and even heated debates by down to earth non-emotional individuals, dedicated to the well-being of Eritrea – whatever it may be.
k.tewolde, I see you there as one of the rational FREE debaters. Now, you may call me anything you wish – “crazy dude’, I will gladly accept!!!
    Have a Pleasant Week-end.

    • k.tewolde September 24, 2016

You do the same pal, there are a few of us left who never gave a chance the sandal wearing tyrant to contaminate our pure Eritrean credo and razzle- dazzle us with his narcissistic BS,he hated our guts and summoned the help of his cousins south of the border and said ‘In order to rule this land and do whatever I want,I have to get rid of these defiant threat out of here.’ Mission accomplished. The place has never been the same since. You recall the article by the female diaspora visitor ‘ADNA GAGYEYO’? Indeed.

      Selam The Habesha
Let me share with you a beautiful memory just because it is Sunday, the Day of rest.
      A friend said: I miss the zig-zag road to Keren;
      Another said: I missed the beautiful clouds on the way to Mendefera;
Another said: I miss the exciting road all the way to Senafe; and
Another, in fascination, said: I miss the winding miraculous road to Massawa.

Now, how is that for a DREAM? That is all we have — DREAM. How about Tomorrow? I don’t know, but I always THINK for a better tomorrow. I know it will never come by wishful thinking, but only if we are all tuned to the same wave length and Re-Liberate Eritrea. Are we on the same wave length??? Let us be honest to ourselves, at the very least ONCE in one-hundred and forty-five years! The alternative is to continue being “Paper Tigers” and wanderers around the Globe – with our everlasting DREAM, of course. What is wrong with us?! The answer is obvious; we refuse to face reality. መርገም ???

Confession: I did add a little bit of ቕመም to the story. Forgive me.
