RSFReporters Without Borders is “dismayed” by the three-year jail sentence and fine of 6 million Somaliland shillings (around 1,000 dollars) that a court in Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway northwestern territory of Somaliland, passed yesterday on Mohamud Abdi Jama, the editor of the independent newspaper Waheen, for allegedly libelling local officials.

The UN’s Department of Political Affairs had invited Eritrea, a member of the regional group IGAD which has hosted the leaders of the Alliance to Reliberate Somalia and supports the Al Shabab rebels.

  ….According to the front-line soldiers, the dead Shabab fighter was from Eritrea, a tiny but nettlesome African country widely suspected of funneling arms to Somalia’s insurgents.The warfare here is shifting too, from fluid, wild street battles to a more settled fight. Sandbags, mortars, even heavy artillery – all that’s part of the mix now, along with suicide bombs and other tricks of Al Qaeda’s trade.
