Dawit Journalist Dawit Isaac has been in prison in Eritrea for nine years. This week his brother, Esayas Isaac told the Swedish Foreign Ministry and the European Union that they are legally obliged to do everything possible to secure his release. The Swedish section of press freedom group Reporters Without Borders is backing his efforts.

Apparently, and as it is becoming more crystal clear, after decades of war of liberation and almost two decades of independence  Eritrea still finds itself with a  government in which absolute power is vested in a single man-the almighty Isayas.

There is urgent need to strengthen and unite the Eritrean democratic camp.  And nothing strengthens and unites more than our readiness to sacrifice personal gains, fame, and yes, even power, in the service of the greater good that spurs  us to create a decent social order where there is no hunger, no slavery or tyranny and where all are treated with dignity and respect.

In CNN’s  Multichoice African Journalism Award, the Free Press award went to Seyoum Tsehaye of Eritrea  whose wife received the prize because Seyhoum is in jail for daring to report that some journalists and politicians he previously met in jail were incarcerated without trial. CNN/
