Sudan deploys more troops to Eritrea border

Sudan says it has sent more troops to its eastern border with Eritrea as tension in the Red Sea region continues to rise. Early this month Khartoum closed its borders with Eritrea and sent troops to its border region

Sudan says it has sent more troops to its eastern border with Eritrea as tension in the Red Sea region continues to rise.

Early this month Khartoum closed its borders with Eritrea and sent troops to its border region of Kassala, following reports that Egypt has deployed troops in Asmara.

“Sudan’s national army has sent part of its forces to this area to protect Sudan’s security as we have information that some parties are targeting us,” Sudanese foreign minister, Ibrahim Ghandour, said after meeting his Ethiopian counterpart Workneh Gebeyehu in Khartoum on Sunday.

Ghandour said that they were not talking “about threats to a country per se” but that they have information that shows there are some who would mean them harm.

“This is why we are anticipating whatever danger can come from there,” Ghandour said.

The meeting took place amid deteriorating relations between Sudan and Ethiopia on one side and Egypt and Eritrea on the other. Khartoum has also recalled its ambassador in Cairo following the reports of Egyptian troops presence in Eritrea.

The latest tension was sparked after Sudan signed an agreement to temporarily hand over the Red Sea island of Suakin to Turkey.

Ankara and Khartoum said Turkey would rebuild the ruined, sparsely populated Ottoman island to increase tourism and create a transit point for pilgrims crossing the Red Sea to Islam’s holiest city of Mecca. Turkey is also set to build a naval dock on the island.

Egyptian media criticised the agreement and alleged Turkey would build a military base on the island.

Ties between Turkey and Egypt have been frosty for some time.

Ankara strongly condemned Egypt’s military coup in 2013, which overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Political tension between the Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia has been rising for years over the use of the water of the Nile River and Ethiopia’s decision to build the continent’s biggest hydroelectric dam on the river.

Egypt has been at odds with Sudan and Ethiopia over the $4.8bn dam project, with Cairo fearing that its position downstream may affect its access to water from the Nile River basin, which will feed the dam.

Cairo accuses Sudan of supporting the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project, while Khartoum accuses Egypt of supporting rebels in Sudan.

Meanwhile, Eritrea has fought two border wars with Ethiopia – which has had a decades-long dispute with Egypt over the Nile River water. The border wars left more than 80,000 people dead and the two East African countries are technically still at war.

Subject: “Sudan deploys more troops to Eritrea border”, January, 15 2018

    Commentary, 15 Jan 2017
Prsident Issayas Afewerki Abraha talked at length at yesterday’s meeting with Eritrean journalist for 9o minutes. One of his point of attack was Turkey. Amazing, how politics evolve. It was only a year or two ago that Eritrea [which means Issyas] and Turkey were chammy to each other. Now they are enemies and the poor people of Eritrea is supposed to hate the Turks.

Sudan too was the eternal friend of Eritreans in the true sense of the word. The Sudanese hospitality to the Eritrean people at various times can NEVER be forgotten. Thousands of words can never be adequate enough to express the kindness, generosity, friendship of the Sudanese people towards the Eritrean people at all times.

It is hoped that Eritrea will not be pulled by its ‘nose’ into unexpected direction and dungeon based on one single self-appointed president’s whim and arrogance who values himself more the five million people. True to his words of warning to an Eritrean Author Issyas indeed is showing Eritreans what he enunciated to do in a moment of relaxation over a glass of spirit. >>> “i will show you all, what I can do’. Hmmmmmm……….

There is Multiple accounts from inside Eritrea to the validity of Egyptian forces presence with in Eritrea. If Issayas has for years Consistently denied about its financing and training of Al-shebab, and the same man and with the same behavioral tactics of denial. There are reliable information from Citizens with in Eritrea that totally contradicts Issayas’s claim of otherwise! Any one with track record of Issayas’s behavior will Know he will always deny, during Ghedli era, he order the arrest of many of his Top comrades and goes to Sudan to pretend as if he new nothing the cause of the Arrest and in a Similar fashion he order his forces to take over badme and vanishes to Middle east as if he new nothing of it– He denied the missive support for Al-shebab and Now again denies presence of Egyptians. Once you are Lair you are Always Lair- it is a personality of Issayas- who could trust him???

    Hi all,
    Happy New Year!
    dear rezen,
It had been a while since your insightful comments were missed. Whatever the reason was: I am glad to hear back from you. During the past couple years a lot of things had changed in Africa but not a bit in the nation. I guess the nation is one of those kind who loves running business as usual. To prolong his dictatorship, Issayas, is playing with fire again. “Sudan”- the day before yesterday was an enemy and fought against it Yesterday, Sudan was the best friend. Today, Sudan is found to be a traitor(for– in that case an enemy. The good thing is time has changed. Unlike 1995-1997, there is no religious movement to blame and Turabi quiet. This time, no more Aesop’s fable – remember “the story of a young frog and an ox” by the pond”.
By the way, for those of you who were young during those years do you know why Issayas told Sudan you are only a frog by the pond –In fact, it is a very long story but I will try to compose it as much as I can and here it goes…
Turabi’s Islamic movement was kind of spreading western Eritrea. This was the best instrument for Issayas to convince western countries that Eritrea, the young nation would be swallowed by jihadists– if they don’t help it swiftly. Soon his question was answered and the president of Christian Coalition who was residing in England, flew to Asmara and drove to Girgr, Sudan’s border. The Christian Coalition leader tells Turabi, yesterday I was at Girgr and smelled your nose, and if you are smart enough I want to see you move an inch from where you are. When Issayas heard this he was so excited and proud.. He was also assured to get some money for his military training in Sawa. What a trophy ? Immediately he broadened Sawa, He also immediately ran to offer the Bela’beled (rashaydas) citizenship for the purpose of human shield. By doing so Issayas, assured his relationship with the west. When Sudan knew who was behind it chose to pass it. They preferred to be the frog by the pond until the bad time passes.. But today, it is different. Egypt is not a western country. Issayas also is haunted by the same story he told the world years ego.
One way or the other, my instinct tells me Issayas will never go to war against any country anymore, because he simply could not afford it; but by beating the drums as usual he may be able to buy some time.
This is just 2018 diversion !!!!

      Hi Dear Meretse,

      I still love that name..
I always read your insightful commentaries. Your English is,, of course, flawless .but I equally love your Tigrigna. It is historical CRIME that WE ERITREANS relegated our own written language, with its grammar, to the back burner.!!! What a folly!!! Can you imagine an Italian preferring Tigrigna as opposed to his own language???? !!!! OK, OK, OK, that is for another time. .
      .
For now, I want to say the usual ten times(*) of “kemey aleKa” Nice to hear from you, addressed to me!!! Wow!!! .The reason for my disappearance has nothing to do with me. I couldn’t even understand it. I was just blocked!!! Yes I was blocked!!! But, assenna! assenna!,assenna! I am grateful to www. archive.assenna.com that I am able to join good people like you Meretse and pour my heart out..as much as I can.

In another commentary, I asked that ERITREA take time, to evaluate itself, by itself, for itself and take a HARD decision on its FUTURE.– otherwise its DESTINY will be decided by others.

      OK, Meretse, Thank You, again.

He knows our heart now. He knows not only that we are not with him but also that we are only waiting for an opportunity to fry him in boiling oil. So he will never, never ever try to go to war with any.
