Sudan’s president due in Kassala amid protests

October 25, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afewerki will today inaugurate a road linking their neighboring countries in the presence of the Qatari Emir Hamad Bin-Khalifah al-Thani.

The trio is due to meet in Sudan’s eastern state of Kassala where they will hold a summit and inaugurate a number of development projects.

According to Sudan’s official news agency (SUNA), Al-Bashir and his guests will inaugurate a road linking Kassala with Al-Laffah border area of Eritrea.

SUNA reported that the 26 kilometers road was financed by Qatar at a cost of $9 million.
The minister of culture and tourism in Kassala, Amira Musa, said that Bashir would also inaugurate a housing complex comprising 1400 units.

Last week, Afewerki visited the Sudanese capital Khartoum for three days during which he discussed bilateral issues with Al-Bashir.

Afewerki’s visit came following reports of tension along the shared borders and UN condemnation of Khartoum for deporting Eritrean refugees.

Human Rights Watch on Tuesday demanded that Sudan halts mass deportation of Eritrean refugees, saying Khartoum had handed over 300 Eritreans to the Eritrean military without screening them for refugee status.

Tension in Kassala
Al-Bashir’s visit to Kassala coincides with a wave of intermittent student protests that has been sweeping the eastern town since October 18.

Grifina Movement, an anti-government youth group, reported that university students in Kassala held a number of protests against ’academic, economic and political situation in the country.’

According to the group, the protests were met with ’excessive violence’ by the authorities, saying that eight students were ’critically injured’ when they were run over by a security car.

There was no official comment by Sudanese authorities.

Sudan has been witnessing a growing number of small protests in recent months against rising food prices and deteriorating public services.

Do you know that Japan is involved in vote-buying in the International Whaling Commission (IWC) following the recruitment of strife-torn Eritrea to the organisation?
Yes, Hgdef was bought by Japan so that Japan can continue whale hunting. The joke is that there is not a single Eritrean involved in whale hunting. At the end of the award winning documentary – The Cove – Eritrea is named as one of the few banana republics such as Barbados, St. Kits, St Lucia … bought by Japan to serve her in IWC votes.

“Eritrea joins Tanzania and the Republic of Congo as recent members of the 82-nation IWC.

All three African countries joined talks in Tokyo in March, which a Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said then were aimed at “obtaining understanding for Japan’s position on sustainable whaling”.
Eritrea is a single-party state accused by neighbouring Ethiopia this month of training and arming terrorists. It is ranked 157th out of 177 nations in the UN Human Development Index and 126th on Transparency International’s Global Corruption Index.
“We do not know their views on whales, or why a small, desperately poor country, where 80 per cent of the population is involved in farming and herding, would want to join the IWC, although it is not hard to guess” said John Friezen”

when a Yemeni fish visited Eritrea, he so the fishes in Eritrea are relax no worried about getting caught at all, so he ask don’t you guys worry about getting fished here? they replayed no no!!
In Eritrea HGDEF they only fish the youth not the fishes, so we are on holiday quite relaxed here.

So forget about whale hunting they don’t even have the ability to fish Sardines, or pilchards and provide food for Eritrea but what is ironic is even there is no fish in markato Asmara.

Today is a great day for Sudan and Eritrea for inauguration the 26 km road from Sudan Kassela to Arbaeta Asher Eritrea, one of the high ranking HGDEF official was happy expressed his happiness by saying the journey to smuggle Eritrean youth by HGDEF car to kassala will be half, starting from tomorrow as long as they pay the right price, even a VIP service will be provided to the the one willing to pay premium price!! We also thank you to the His Majesty Emir of Qatar Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani for financing the 90 million project, by significant reducing the smuggling time.

        Abdi,

I would not beg for 26 km , which lies in flat surface and between the two great nations, even Eritrea can not afford 4 million for this project. If you sum up all the roads which built for the last 20 years , it does not reach 1000 km( asphalted) , and most of it sponsored by European union and in fact Ghadafi also contribute the Messawa Assab road which is nit Asphalted. Most of the development work is supported either USAID(prior to its expulsion), European union ,and the middle East fund.Instead of empty propaganda let us a report corroborated with data shows the amount of work cost and the overall assessment let us be clear

Do you know guys Isaias has a joint fishing venture with an Egyptian wealthy man called Abduselam Hamed Rekan. Think! why Isaias promises, how Eritrea is so keen on the fishing sector, every year on 24th of May. But we have never seen any development in the sector in the last 20 years. He and his partner have been stealing the Eritrean marine resources year in and year out since 1993 and they are not accountable to any body including his own henchmen. This is a very common word in Massawa but no body has the gut to denounce about it. God bless Eritrea.

OUR YOUTH’S PROBLEM IS THE UNLIMITED NATIONAL SERVICES,SO LETS SIGN A PETITION ASKING TO BRING IT BACK TO ITS ORIGIN OF TWO YEARS AND SUBMIT IT TO THE ERITREAN EMBASSIES WHERE EVER WE RESIDE,IT’S UNPRECEDENTED IDEA AND DEFINITELY WILL BE SUPPORTED BY THE MAJORITY WHO WANT TO SEE OUR YOUTH’S PARTICIPATION IN BUILDING THE COUNTRY THAN LOSE IN EXILE.
SO LET’S CIRCULATE THIS TO REACH EVERY ERITREAN AND COLLECT SIGNATURES AS MANY AS WE CAN, I BELIEVE IT WILL BRING A WONDERFULL OUTCOME.

**NOTE THIS IS NOT UP-RISING AGAINST THE GOV’T AND SHOULD INCLUDE ALL ERITREANS WHO CONCERN ABOUT OUR YOUTH FUTURE REGARDLESS OF THEIR POLITICAL MOVEMENTS**.

      • Weldit October 26, 2011

Petition will not make the regime change its mind.
Sanction is the proven effective way to get PIA to cooperate.
So let’s start working on travel sanction against senior PFDJ officials for the permanent forced labor on our youth.

        • Abdi October 27, 2011

          Mr.weldit
we don’t want regime change,if we go back to the early days of the N.Service everybody was happy to serve and get it out of his/er way,and then after they were able to travel where ever they want and come back home when ever they want, but once it became unlimited everything has changed,i don’t know if you agree but i think the border conflict played the biggest role in the extension of the N.Service,as the gov’t doesn’t have regular soldiers he was forced to keep them on stand-by because it wouldn’t be easy calling ppl in case the war erupted again.however its not fair on the youth to be held hostages leaving their older parents, children to pick the mess, and above all their future,be it work or education.hence they adventare their life to better their future which’s very understandable,
So signing this petition can ease/rid this situation which is 200%(my opinion) the cause of these suffer we’re seeing today on
the youngsters and their dependants.we are the only ones who
reside abroad can take this mission and the gov’t won’t reject it,if
its been signed by all and every eritrean.
SO LETS PARY THIS SANCTION(OPPORTUNISTS DREAM) TO BE LIFTED,AND GO FOR IT.

  • kozami October 26, 2011

If the situation in Eritrea was to be a fraction as bad as it it made out to seem by the cyber opposition, the GoE would have been history long time ago. In my quest to learn some truth, I had recently spoken to a number of new refugees from Eritrea. After casual debriefing of each other’s views about the situation at home, I would then press on with the question “…but really, what have you personally suffered at the hands of the GoE?” line of questioning. And try to exhaustively engage many subjects of potential concern. Sadly, in overwhelming, almost all, cases the individual has no personal experience of maltreatment. Majority of them point to lack of economic opportunities, low pay and other generic issues as the arrest of G15 and lack of free press. National Service is the top source of discomfort. The general sense is however, the need to better one’s life. One clever way of going to those countries who sponsor refugees, being practiced now happens to be: the would be refugee fly to the Sudan and gets UNHCR registration docs (b’taqua) then return to Eritrea. When their interview time arrives, they go back to the Sudan and return again to Eritrea. And, finally come to the Sudan to exit to the west. We all know how asylum claims are fudged to fit in. In the event of war, truth is the first causality!

      Qozami,

      Part I.

I seem to be trailing your tail so to speak where you’re “hiding” instead of hanging out in the other postings. What you have just found in your “fact finding” mission is pretty impressive where you give an impression to a casual drop-in commentator that, you’re given a mandate to access the main reasons that are inciting the young people to leave the country in droves. However, why are we not surprised the fact that, your finding is not any different than what Zem’hret Yowhans had to say when concerned people asked him about the young people who are leaving the country in thousands? I am sure, nobody would expect you to dissent from the party line where you’re taught to stick with the same line in a bid to handle a heavy-duty-question that could potentially put the PFDJ handlers in a rattled cage.

      • Temesgen Medhanie October 26, 2011

        Qozami,

        Part II.

Here is a metaphor that could put your otherwise convoluted line of thinking in a perspective: Suppose you’re an attending physician looking after a bed ridden patient where the diagnosis is cancer. As a competent physician, your primary goal is to find the best way possible to help him get cured if not to contain the disease. Suppose one of complications of his illness is diarrhea and nausea. Here is the deal: What would you have done? Would you have given him a medication that could only stop the diarrhea and nausea or you would have tried your very best to get to the bottom of his illness and treat him or her accordingly? If you try to handle the patient as you’re trying to handle the refugees’ plight by sugarcoating their agony, in no time, your license would be revoked for incompetence. Hope you got my drift.

I know the way these comment sections are organized/used can prove keeping track tricky at times. I do however read all comments you write (and many others do) and try to respond whenever I manage. Especially, since most of the time, we are not comment on the article displayed, per Se, a separate discussion forum would have been easier to follow and monitor. Ye’tafa’ana alo bejakha eleka! Back to your point though, I believe the symptom vs root cause analogy, is a mismatch at best or self serving at worst. The root cause can not possibly be attributed to a single party in a plethora of confounding factors. Granted that we hold diametrically opposite views on the issue, the reality, as I bear witness in a matter of FACT experience, a great many new arrivals to the west turn out to be pro GoE. We can spin this fact however way we like, but would only chip away at what little credibility the so called opposition possesses. My fact finding tour was by no means scientifically significant to prove the null hypothesis that there exist no problems. But, a humble pointer towards the gigantic gap between perception and reality of the Eritrean political landscape.

          • kozami October 27, 2011

            Temesgen part 2

What all the above boils down to is that we all have our individual ‘Truth’ when your individual ‘truth’ mirrors my individual ‘truth’ that we establish credibility among us. Putting aside rhetoric, facts tell otherwise. And the sooner the so called opposition begin to reconcile their ‘truths’ with the widely held ‘truth’ of the Eritrean masses, the more likely that they would start to find meaning in what they do.

          • Temesgen Medhanie October 27, 2011

            Qozami,

As you’ve brilliantly put your otherwise compelling argument, there sure are confounding factors that could potentially eclipse as one strives to see if there is a common trend that could be substantiated as the main factor that triggers the mass exodus. Moreover, as much as there are no statistical indices to utilize empirical analysis, it would be problematic to come to a main conclusion. However, as much as social or collective action or behaviour is subjective, one can have a general feel if you will where one can draw a conclusion. That is, given the hugely influencing negative patterns, (harsh economic conditions, indefinite military service, lack of rule of law inter alia) one could safely claim that, the said reasons are the main factors where the youth is left with no option but to leave the country in search of a better life. I admit, they may not be heeding to the call of the Opposition but they are not fond of GoE either. Hence, the moniker “The Third Wave.”

    • Abdi October 27, 2011

i totally agree,as i ve spoken to lots of them, and exactly said the same,”mengsti key akafaeka dea men qulih elu krieka” even some joked,”yqre ‘belemena ‘mber wedi afom zgedeflalnu ‘blnan ” and we all ‘ve been through that, haven’t we?

      • kozami October 27, 2011

        Haqqi N

Please try to see the bigger picture here, what I am saying is (didn’t even hear Mr Yowhans’ speech mach less to paraphrase him) that the ‘truth’ you try to relate as an opposition is ringing hallow with the vast majority of Eritreans’ ‘truth’ When you tell the refugees they have been shot at, and when their ‘truth’ tells them they hadn’t then you lose credibility. When you tell them they had been tortured at the hands of GoE and their individual ‘truth’ tells them they hadn’t then you lose credibility. When you tell them they had been starved and famished and their ‘truth’ tells them they hadn’t then you lose credibility. And facts tell a different story story when only a handful of people turn up to your public meetings and demos. I am sure you have many creative descriptions for those holding your views with low esteem.

        • Haqqi Nezareb October 27, 2011

          Kozami,

Here you go again misinforming on numbers. Here are some numbers from the recent activities dominated by the Eritrean youth:
          1. New York: July 25 : > 300 came despite the hidding of the venue for for 2500 zombies
          2. New York: July 26: 900-1000, very effective one
          3. Germany: 500-600, Do you remember the placard that reads: Where is my father? I hope you tell her where her father is.
          4. Israel: Kicking your inept ambassador from a hall
          5. London: 600-800 outside, hard questions poured on the lackey Zemehret inside the festival hall.

All these activities were carried out by the youth who escaped from the tyrant.

What is your next lie? Let me guess: about the looming sanction, right?

          • haqqi Nezareb October 27, 2011

            Kozami,

I guess my approximate numbers don’t lie and are not 30000. Fabrication and misinformation are key components of the evil and filthy system of Issais and his blind followers like yourself. Let me remind you the questions raised by the sons and daughters of prisoners that are dying slowly at EraEro during the recent activities by the Eritrean Youth. Here are the questions:
            1. Where is my father? Daughter of a prisoner
            2. When is the time to hug both of my parents? Daughter of Petros Solomon & Aster Yohannes
            3. Can you allow me to meet my father in prison: son of a prisoner
            4. Can you please release our father?:Dawit Issac’s kids.
For Dawits’s kids the bad news already knocked at their door today.
You Zombie, go and have many beers to celebrate the death of another Eritrean life: Dawit Issac.

The pfdj and their supporters are the most hypocrite in this planet they are blaming the opposition for going to Addis but the funny thing is that all the diasporas, officials and generals of the regime drink smuggled Bedele and Harar Beer, but the funniest thing is that they take off the original label and replace it with Asmara Beer.(Molti beer is still functioning).Had the border has been loose the officers would drive to Mekle to drink beer and to say Eskista, but if the regime goes at this speed we gone witness this in near future. If the Eritrean Defence force flock in mass to Tigray why u blame the opposition to have a meeting in Addis- I would not surprise if Issias claims that they were given their ten year vacation and this would help the country in ensuring food security by exporting its youth as a result we need less food

Is this really a news? These three so called leaders can not find anything else, all these for 23 kms of road on a flat desert surface? This is not even in the Massawa road escarpment, for God’s sake this is just 23 kms on a desert road but it made news!
Last weekend, Hgdef’s representative ato Zemhret Yohanes boasted that “Eritrea is has the largest number of machinery in Africa.” He added without a shame that Eritrea’s economy is booming and leading Africa.
If this was the case, why would two countries, that is, Eritrea and Sudan beg Qatar to build a 23 km road on a flat surface? For God’s sake, 23 km is halfway between Asmara and Dekemhare.
The only reason, these three men are together is likely to mourn Gaddafi’s death because some of them kept quite while he was being bombed or some of them had a hand or two in pushing Gaddafi to his death.
Funny, the “land of machinery” is begging little Qatar to build her a 23 km road!

      Barentu
i disagree, mind you the road will contribute alot to the western side of Eritrea and east Sudan,do you know the road kassala massawa is shorter than kassala portsudan by nearly half the distance, and ppl was using massawa port despite the rough and uneven road was before, and now this can ease and improve the Im/export between the two nations.
thanks to” litter”Qatar, its one of biggest national gas exporter my bro.

Trust me Barentu, this is a corner stone to Eri-Sud people for further development in the basic life of the two people. This is what you who call your self do not understand what our Government is doing.Just you only think almost very nearer of your nose. Just think for future and in positive mind. I think you Have a mental problem.

Make u laugh me, man I know once you pass Barentu all the way is flat, and the way was there before except they do some improvement and asphalting period. You talk as if a bridge was built between Yemen and Eritrea across the red sea.Come on guys! This is how PFDJ exaggerates a small job and compared it to American civilization. Once Sopia, tesfamariam convinced me and others the Assab Messawa road is far better than what is being done in US but when I arrived at USA , I can not believe my eyes, I say that bitch cheated me and u say she us really good at it.You guys keep on lying about 16 miles road built by Qutar as a dynamic economic force. But thanks for Isauas the Shakw if Emirates has got a free Eritrean Islands.

I am disappointed on the opinion posted on the Eritrean web sites. All comments and statements are about insulting complaining. Did ever think to enlighten your brain about the present World where it is heading? I do not think so. Matured ideas and statements can build the mind of Eritreans. Some people I have been hearing them of afraid of one another. If you blieve in your own poletical principle why are we afraid? It is lack of maturity. If you are matured you do not have to say this and that. Just say it and do it. That is the conscience of the mind of principle.
Do you know that our African brothers more conscience than us. At least they blieve in their Africanism of their nature. We have been ignorant of our owh history what we taught including Ethiopians those they have been boasting the most free people from Africans for thousands of years. First of all we do not know our historical background of our history. We were enslaved systematically.

Bashir told Issias tacitly, I will not forget when you stabbed in the back with USA backing

26 October 2011 BBC News, Khartoum

Mr Bashir said the move was a response to Gaddafi’s support for Sudanese rebels Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir says his country gave military support to the Libyan rebels who overthrew Col Muammar Gaddafi.

In a speech broadcast live on state television, Mr Bashir said the move was in response to Col Gaddafi’s support for Sudanese rebels three years ago.

Sudan and Libya have had a complicated and frequently antagonistic relationship for many years.

Libya was declared liberated on Sunday, two days after Col Gaddafi’s death.

    ‘Opportunity to reciprocate’

He said God had given Sudan a chance to respond, by sending arms, ammunition and humanitarian support to the Libyan revolutionaries.

“Our God, high and exalted, from above the seven skies, gave us the opportunity to reciprocate the visit,” he said.

“The forces which entered Tripoli, part of their arms and capabilities, were 100% Sudanese,” he told the crowd.

      Ya thanks
I know the message is not for Ghadafi, he is dead a clear message to his buddy Issias Afeworki, that means you gone be the next as it is remembered , the Sudan rebels almost besieged Khartoum and Issias was part of it by training the tltebels during the attack one of the rebel leader caught crossing the Eritrean borders and the leadership was inside Eritrea.Issias is mad about what happen to Ghadafi but he is also scared by the action of Sudan which it gone be reciprocate to him any time what he did to Sudan.

There is a clear evidence the region is mercurial any thing happens in the region within hours time.Particularly with the American forces entering in the region in the name of disarming RLA, in Uganda. In order to save his face Issias is taking every measure but it is evident his days are numbered beyond reasonable doubt.
