What has prompted me to write under the theme “Re-branding of the opposition” for this article is Mr Mohammed Ismail’s article titled “Be part of the change”

The term change has become a practice that has widespread throughout the world- but its relevance has never been stronger that today, especially from the start of the Arab Awakening.  Focusing on ourselves in the Eritrean context, many youth are apathetic about Eritrean politics. Thus first of all we have to face this fact and then try to address it as a society or opposition in Diaspora. In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, however, we have begun to see a grim sign of hope from the Eritrean youth in Diaspora. As a matter of fact it is true that in life specific events do change the course of history. In the last eventful year there was optimism and then there was delusion as we the society, youth and opposition failed to maintain consistency and struggled to live up to expectation.

Throughout this article I use ‘opposition forces’ as a generic term for anyone who is a member of a political opposition or a civic organisation, independent individuals, religious leaders or intellectuals who are opposing the PFDJ’s regime.

Let me take you back to his article again in which he claimed that both youth and women attendance was poor in the meeting held in London in January 2012. Again apathy is and/or has always been the only winner on dismal attendance. I can’t agree more that the figure he mentioned- at only 3 women and a dozen youth is both eye-catching and alarming. To some extent without being judgemental, the majority of opposition political and civic organisations do not take the slightest notice of such scenario. They collectively miss every open goal.

As much as they are to blame for such occurrences over the years I do take a portion of that as well. EYGM UK is one of the few independent and free youth organisations which have been working really hard to inspire the youth in UK and beyond. We are ordinary youth from different backgrounds with similar concerns and values. On different occasions we have held youth meetings, organised demonstrations and participated at different Seminars of the opposition. And most importantly we sent a delegation and a representative at both the National Conference and Congress. From those exposures we have obtained vast knowledge and invaluable experience pertinent to the subject of youth issues, women and overall about the opposition. To help us consolidate what we have learnt we also at times have used questionnaires and carried out researches and so on and on.

From our interactions, dialogue, discussions, engagements, research conducted (not empirical though) and activities undertaken with concerned Eritreans and peers regarding the non-attendance and disengagement in opposition activities and what could be done to improve and reverse that to new ideas. The problems we face now have been building over the past 2 decades or so and I am sure it will take time and seeks the meeting of a great many minds of youth, women and opposition figures before we know what the solution to these major problems will be.

But we as EYGM UK believe that by coming together along with all stakeholders, to discuss the issues of common interest, we can start to realize what a solid allegiance we can all create. The answers are within all of us.

Here are some opinions we believe the opposition should not ignore.

The opposition forces should recognize the need for the struggle to bring democratic change in Eritrea to be sustainable. The change in culture is therefore inevitable.

Changes in society: the following changes should have driven the opposition to review their approaches, strategies and political programmes to meet the new challenges.

–          Changes of demography: due to forced immigration (particularly the mass arrival of new immigrants)

–          Family and youth structures, including a younger ethnic Eritrean population in Diaspora

Further, issues such as under-achievement, underrepresented in many sectors and discrimination are constant reminders of the grim experiences of everyday life for our people in Diaspora. They all demand robust and innovative approaches. Thus the opposition is required to seek leaders and cadres who can demonstrate certain essentials that can enable them to reconnect with the general public, youth and women’s needs, aspirations and dreams. Our opposition should learn to listen, have the ability to arise to a challenge, show determination, and have big heart and patience that can win him / her hearts and minds.

EYGM UK is formed first and foremost in solidarity with the Eritrean people and what unites us with the opposition is fundamentally our willingness to first change ourselves and then bring democratic change. We are not a special group and have no organisational or party political affiliations though. We would like the voice, views and concerns of the youth to be heard and ultimately to create a return to public discussion involving both youth and women with the opposition. However, we must all make a concerted effort to address the issue on time.

For instance too many of them usually say, “Forget their charm and articulate style when they always talk and describing the actions of Isaias and PFDJ – this opposition are and would just be as dictator as any of their predecessors. And we know better than them about Isaias and co than they do.”

Even though we have acknowledged that there are weaknesses and divisions within the opposition but at the same time we have tried to convince them that what they claim is not always the case. It is understood when they question the opposition’s leadership quality, lack of focus and at times split caused by friction and infighting over power but they should not question their dedication and commitment. Obviously those people whom we exchanged views with we try to encourage them to engage and take part in any opposition activities themselves and then to make comments there. Sadly their response would be that the current opposition political system/structure is fundamentally flawed and based on the phantom leadership contest of power vacuum.

Apparently they indicated that they would make a U-turn providing the opposition has become appealing and find out what the majority of Diaspora need. We at EYGM UK campaign for Eritrea’s alienated youth, but still we have given approval and encourage our members or any other youth to run for youth representation whether in the Commission and Council or local opposition co-ordinating committees, including for political office in exceptional circumstance to protect the Eritrean opposition from schism, ensure youth representation and other direct threats to both the people and youth in general. Unfortunately some youth activists and members of youth movements have accused some of the opposition organisations/parties of trying to hijack their movement in a bid for power and use them as tools instead. Moreover, some of them even accuse them of negative influence if they fail to affiliate with them. According to some of them, they are control freak, so if you do not work with them they would infiltrate you and then bring and use unnecessary agenda or tactics that could potentially lead to split or weaken the youth activities. They suggest it would be better had each opposition organisation whether political or civic have or form their own Mass Organisation of Union of Women, Youth and etc… Then we would not have a problem how to deal with them on given terms.

EYGM UK acknowledges there are difficulties and have always have demanded change of strategy when the opposition are engaging with the youth. Correspondingly we believe the opposition needs the youth but at the same time the youth also need the opposition to help them co-ordinate and organise effective activities. Neither will succeed in bringing democratic change without the other in Eritrea.

To sum up most youth who fled Eritrea and living in Diaspora think political organisations do not represent the interest of the Eritrean people. Like PFDJ they would barely care about themselves. For this reason the opposition should conduct an outreach and reverse such perception. Demonstrate to them that you put ordinary people first in practice not in words, and then other similar organisations could learn a lot from that approach. Also try to show great empathy towards their plights that the majority of these youth have no sense of belonging (citizenship) any more as they have not been given one. They have no stake in Eritrea as citizens because Isaias and his clique told the youth there is no such thing. As you have already by now surely noticed, whether EYGM UK or I don’t know enough about politics or the traditional opposition organisations sense of purpose and function to ponder an acceptable solution. However, what EYGM UK knows, as well as the majority concerned Eritreans intuitively know, the solution is not mainly political, but surely spiritual. This reminds me what Mahatma Gandhi said, “BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.”

In my next article Part 2 I will write about the youth perception of Civic Societies in detail and also I will try to cover women’s issues and perspectives on the opposition as a whole.

Life of Eritrean refugee children in the hands of the Sudanese criminal elements and Arab Rashaidas along the Eritrea-Sudan border.
Perhaps the only country that can not defend its children from slavery — Eritrea.
Where is the nation? Where is the opposition?
    This is a UNHCR video:

      Cambo,
You are a smart person, but don´you think .. quote .”the only country that can not defend its children from slavery — Eritrea.
How can Eritrea defend the slavery ,that it is not only part of the trade ,but …maybe..pioneer initiator …/author of the slavery trade …..Remmember we are discussing the old Mudada ,now PFDJ..Western union of terrorists SPONSOR OF 72 VIRGINS.cHANGING FROM ONE STOVE TO ANOTHER DOES NOT AFFECT ,THE TASTE OR NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF THE FOOD !!!

  • SINGAPO-ERITREAN February 2, 2012

Fellow citzens do not hate me because I am smart & farsighted …read this article at aiga forum “በአፋር ክልል የተፈፀመውን የሽብር ተግባር አስመልክቶ ከትግራይ ተወላጆች ማኅበር በሰሜን አሜሪካ የተሰጠ መግለጫ” I have been following the moves of Woyane …(now part of Eprdf)…..something is brewing . Connect the ones I informed you about the 2 writers ,Jossy Romanat & SuhuL……I predicted the sRESULT OF THE Socalled border war of 1998 ,,I think prime minister Meles must have read my open letter to him in tigrigna….(O.K ..maybe I am flattering here myself, but mark my words ,some military action is inevitable..no matter slow. This is their formula, WOYANES DO NOT TAKE SERIOUS ACTIONS BEFORE CONVINCING THE MASSES.NOW THEY ARE CO ORDINATING THE HEAT THROUGH THEIR SURROGATE ORGANIZATIONS. Do not hate the smart messenger if you hate the message !!!

    • HGDF February 3, 2012

When has the Woyanes stopped from planning and preparing for war? They have dreamt destroying Shaewuya through out their life time and tried it many times when they felt that they were strong enough. We have heard so many ላንዴና ለመጨረሻ. Tell me something which has not been tried on shaewuya so far. You tried War, No war no peace, sanction, isolation, Sanaa forum,Ethic politics…… you name the rest. We were told that Eritrea will collapse just by blocking berbere and Taff. Now the tone is changed block Eritrea from selling gold. Only Bisha can buy the entire Teff farms in Ethiopia.

Weyane couldn’t defeat Alshebab who just play Chirchir abede in Meqadisho. If they want to try it on Eritrea, then it seems that they are fed up of staying in power for so long and they are trying to facilitate their farwell. Because the Amharas were too coward to help them with this..

      • SINGAPO-ERITREAN February 3, 2012

        HGDF ,
Woyane would be more stupid than PFDJ ,if they tried to march to Asmara & play nation building . I would not want them to march alone, without help organize E.M.D.J (Eritrean movt. for democracy & justice.) and help EMDJ in keeping law & order . Ethiopian govt . knows if it goes too far ,without a stable Eritrean substitution ,it would not have a positive outcome .AND GUESS WHAT ?,THOSE WHO REJOICE WHILE THE NEIGHBOURS HOUSE IS ON FIRE ARE FOOLS. AND MELES /THE ETHIOPIAN GOVT. ARE NO FOOLS !!!!while I admire your polite & educated manner of presenting things, maybe putting the Eritrean people in the center of the equation, would help us see things from a human angle .If not germans could own Eritrea & call it Dusself-eritrea ,or Eritreashen. It would be the same land !!!It is people we should consider.

          Singapo-Eritigrean my fellow citzen!
Marching to a country with adopted dog like the EMDJ doesn’t work. It didn’t work in Somalia with the TFG. I didn’t work in Afghanistan, Iraq and many other places. The adopted dog can’t keep the house even for a second when his master is gone. If Meles is smart enough he won’t repeat his mistake in somalia. “Alshebab threatened to invade Ethiopia” was his justification for the “smart Ethiopians”. Even people as smart as you buy this justification while Alshebab couldn’t go beyound the chirchir abede in Moqadisho. Putting people in the center is not speaking day and night about people but do something which benefits them. And the Ethiopians should learn to say “የኤርትራ ህዝብ ወንድማችን ነው” instead of saying “ዓሰብ የኛ ናት”. And your smart master Meles should see how many people are still displaced because of his refusal to accept the border ruling than saying “the ruling divides into two farmlands, wells, trees, mountains etc.

          • SINGAPO-ERITREAN February 4, 2012

            Brother HGDF ,
I have never heard of tplf ,openely or secretly stating that ASSAB belonged to Ethiopia . even while they were tegadelti, even while the border war .
As for, if only meles would retreat it´s Army from Mudada …Mudada/PFDJ would not commit all this crimes against its´”own” people,…ie would not imprison fellow comrades in Arms ,would not massacre youngsters ….is like being outraged about a rapist who tore the victims underwear ,than the actual rape I REALLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER THAT. I LEAVE IT TO THE MASSES. BUT ,ANYWAYS ,THANKS FOR THE MISINFORMATION

your fellow citzen ,Eritrean of Singapour origin

Hi Bereket i read it a wonderful title of Re-building of the opposition.then is good but i really all the time i ask my self why the people live in overseas almost 75% of still worrying or not really to say about PFDJ.It’s quite hard why the people is like that.i think still the people saycologically not free means not feel confidence. But I’ll tell u one thing”nothing is impossible except human being is dying and raise it”that is the only God job.but we need to be working hard and hard.also don’t forget we have to pray to great God both islam and Christian then we will be sucessful.

  • Cambo February 3, 2012

    SINGAPO-ERITREAN,
you are spilling weyane’s secrets here in public. you started it. This is the likely scenario that may take place sooner or later. Time is on Meles’ side. Meles is a consummate political animal.
Step 1: He has fully succeeded in alienating and isolating the Hgdef regime and Eritrea, like Abaq mantile, in the regional and international politics. Internationally, Eritrea has no friends or supporters. (The Arab world is cannibalizing each other.)
Step 2: Eritrea is under the UN’s economic and other sanctions and embargos; therefore, Eritrea can not buy any worthy defence armaments in the open market.
Step 3: Intensify propaganda against Hgdef and Eritrea. This has been very successful, result — even young children are running away from Eritrea to Sudan and Ethiopia. This is a major coup.
Step 4. Full military readiness in the name of fighting terrorism, including buying and getting western aid in sophisticated military hardware. This is complete.
    ….

    • Cambo February 3, 2012

Step 5: Reorganizing the Eritrean opposition, read Bayto Hawasa. (not really, this is a cover up. weyanes know very well, gujle Hawasa is worthless.) weyanes main target and prize are the young Eritreans in the refugee camps of Tigrai and Afar kilel. They have already started organizing these groups under two separate branches (They do not want them to work together. The rule from PMZ’s office is : keep them separate.) The leaders of these two groups are a young organization led by Hageray in Tigrai and the second one led by Sulieman Abubeker in Afar region. (Do you know why they are not called Eritrean Afars but Red Sea Afars?)
Step 6: Wait or create a very laud and visible “incident” as a pretext to start the invasion, possibly under a “shade” of a major international incident, such an upheaval in the Middle East
Step 7: Target — port of Assab. Why? Because Weyanes think, this will apparently make every of Weyane’s political problem in Ethiopia “go away” for the next ten years.

Will this be successful as planned and intended by Meles? If I answer this in public, I will have here more enemies than I already have.

      • Cambo February 3, 2012

        Singapo-Eritrean,
This is how PM Meles calls the Eritrean Afars officially:
“ተወላዲ ብሄረ ዓፋር ቀይሕ ባሕሪ ሱሌማን ኣቡበከር መሓመድ”
Correction: the top young leader to watch among Red Sea Afars:
“ተወላዲ ቀይሕ ባሕሪ ዓፋር አቶ ኢብራሂም ሃሮን”

        • SINGAPO-ERITREAN February 3, 2012

          Cambo,
Information is potential power. While the points you presented are new to me & thank you for sharing it with all of us , I am also of the believe that Meles will always put his country ,Ethiopia first ,& the Ethiopian interest could not be chaotic eritrea. I have believed for a long time ,that this Tigrigna people will come to fairly similar mentality, the land & the sea will go nowhere …..CAMBO, this are the things we should be analizing…..I love the way you presented it. If you say ,so & so has AIDS & his death will not be very sexy , does not mean you ,CAMBO, wished him death ,you are being realistic,.And somehow I believe ,deep down Meles wants us cook on our own soup ,so that we could see the things “correctly ” ,,,in a way he is doing a sneaky thing that will bring about a desirable results (peace) on the Area

          • Cambo February 3, 2012

            Singapo,
You are right, “Meles will always put Ethiopia first”. In this case, only if “Ethiopia” is spelt as “Tigray”, and Ethiopia is under the TPLF leadership. To Meles, the TPLF is more important than any political entity because that is his power base.
Put yourself in Meles’ shoes, things will be clearer.
Second point, you wrote “deep down Meles wants us cook on our own soup ,so that we could see the things”. Wrong! Meles does not work for maHbere gbresenay ማሕበረ ግብረሰናይ nor is he a monk. Meles is in a deadly business called politics. His job is plotting ‘survival’ to keep his Weyane movement stronger by any means necessary.
Imagine this likely picture, Meles wakes up every morning looking at the Ethiopian map on the right side of his bed with a big red mark on Assab.
Will he move sooner or later? … He has ample time, so most likely later when we start getting “cooked in our own soup”.
It is a very risky waiting.

      • HGDF February 3, 2012

    Kubur Hawna Bereket
Thank you for the writing that needed to be written. And I want to tell you how you are admired for your courage and dedication to Eritrean cause, you are true brother in deed,
    God bless you.
I think it is imporatant of us to say what we think honestly with respective manners and
it is important also to provide the right amount of support and solidarity to the urgent cause of our people from these currently under-handed unfortuante conditions. The events
of 2011 are more positive examples than negative. The middle east uprising constituted the kind of a surprise transformational events in our current history and proofs the world that
has been immune to the spread of libery and freedom. We risk being disadvantaged if we
didn’t deal decisevely with challenge we face to democratic change. As far as I concerned
it is very essential to look ahead and find common ground that benefits our country. We
should discharge ourself honestly from those stupid clouds of partisan politics to avoid
the picture of disasterous cosequences. With no affiliation to any political group, I will
vow my alliance or support to any with credentials and progressive policy .

    • ahmed saleh February 3, 2012

It is funny when you see people beating the drum for war. It is DISASTER, DISASTER and EVIL. We been there, we felt it and beleive me civilians will
be on front lines face its damage. As one defence Minister said; At the end
of the day when millitary commanders look up they see the president and defence minister, when me and the president look up, we see nothing but the sky above us. What strange and cruel world we are living at , aah.

  • barnaby_john@yahoo.co.uk February 3, 2012

Well said Mr Kahsai…. I admire your courage and determination. You said …” willingness to first change ourselves and then bring democratic change.“ and i strongly believe ,.. if we are not true to ourselves then we cannot be true to anyone.

  • hawileito February 3, 2012

It’s a good article Bereket. But, what you writing is not what is in your heart. Because we did’t see any events or demons in ur name (partispant). To say EYGM UK takes a lot more than that. Posting articles will change the youth, you need act to motivate the youth. You are saying EYGM UK which you didn’t do anything any visible things in the ground. Please mind what you are doing!!!

  • Abdi February 3, 2012

Even the youth activists started acting like the old jebha lectures, meetings, conferences etc with out any work on the ground,i witnessed the same thing when i was in Sudan meeting every week with out any positive outcome, here they go as father as son,and ended up in cafes bela belew!!

  • SINGAPO-ERITREAN February 3, 2012

    CAMBO,
Thank you for getting back to me. I listen to all sides & try to make sense of situations. I agree Meles is a seasoned politician. But ,I have this believe ,that Meles knows people are the best fort than Nakfa or Dedebit. Do you really think Meles will sacrifice the long term solution to a short term advantage ? He wants peaceful Bihers/tribes bordering Ethiopia in general ,& Tigray in particular.Ethiopia is growing at a marvelous speed ,including production of Coffee ,3rd in the world ,surpassing Columbia.I am going to differ ,that Meles wants the Eritrean people as his enemy ,including your´s truly ,Singapo – Eritrean.
If Ethiopia does not use Assab , it will be worthless , Why would he kill the goose that lays golden egg, she may belong to a neighbour ,but lays it´s eggs in his yard . I will respectfully defer on this poinbt. But, please keep up your analyses.
