The justice minister Karen Hækkerup has announced that she wants to look into the increasing number of asylum-seekers hailing from the east African country of Eritrea.

Last month Denmark experienced 510 asylum seekers from Eritrea, compared to an average of about ten per month during the first quarter of this year.

“We need to look into who the asylum-seekers from Eritrea are, why they are coming to Denmark, and whether they have legitimate protection needs,” Hækkerup said in a press release.

“If they don’t, they need to be sent back. I’ve noted that Udlændingestyrelsen [immigration services] intends to send a mission to the area to evaluate the situation.”

The minister went on to explain that the many Eritrean asylum-seekers will not be granted asylum until the evaluation has been completed.

Denmark isn’t the only nation to experience a spike in Eritrean asylum-seekers recently. Norway, the Netherlands and Germany have all experienced similar increases, and the Justice Ministry is in dialogue with the authorities in the three nations to glean their experiences.

Hækkerup has also established a work group tasked with looking into how border control areas and airports can be improved in terms of tackling human trafficking and illegal immigration.

Albania detains illegal Eritrean immigrants with suspected Ebola symptoms

TIRANA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Albanian police Tuesday detained some 40 illegal immigrants from Eritrea, five of whom have symptoms of the deadly Ebola haemorrhagic fever.

Local media said the illegal immigrants were arrested near the city of Vlore, in south Albania. The five who have suspected symptoms were taken to a local hospital for further tests.

There’s no exact statistics of refugees coming from poor and war-torn African countries to Albania. Official data shows that in the first half of 2014, about 500 Eritrean and Somali immigrants were detained in Albania. Their destination is some of the Western European countries.

The largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded began in Guinea in December 2013 and spread to Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, where a total of 1,848 cases have been reported, including 1,013 deaths, according to the latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO warned last Friday that the disease is now a “public health emergency of international concern” and called for a coordinated international response to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola.

      EBOLA
I was wondering on your past comments why you pick that fatal virus name in here . At the end
you come into this conclusion . Either true or not I truly suspect your intention .
Because of the symptoms that doesn’t mean they carry the virus . Spreading such unfounded
and irresponsible information might put those Eritrean refugees

In fact Assenna should stay alerted toward commentators who keep change their pen-names to conceal
identity from gaining attention . Not to reveal real name is a matter of choice which is respected
but at this kind of disguising approach it sends negative message to bring suspicion .

    Ebola
You may call it legitimate news and I
call it misleading news . Because of
symptoms to spread the news without
    evidence is irresponsible .
Since it concern Eritreans we should question their motives to find the truth
instead we approve anything we read .
Why you mix Weyane in this case ?

    ahmed,

The news goes “Albania detains illegal Eritrean immigrants with suspected Ebola symptoms”..it states suspected Ebola symptoms.
This is Chinese news ,you can call them and tell them that they are lying..that nobody was detained for such reason. Maybe the Eritreans passed by Nigeria ..THIS DOES NOT MEAN ALL ERITREAN REFUGEES HAVE EBOLA, MAYBE 10% OR NOBODY ..YOU COULD BE A DOCTOR ,I AM NOT.

    THANKS

I have a problem with the comment more than the “news”. You do not have a means to show us whether it is real news, that’s of a serious disease. I suspect and hope it is rumors. Ahmed put it the right way.
As Eritrean, if you are one, you care not to spread panic among our people and our refugees. You know they are in distress both in and out of their land. By now you are aware also that not any symptom is an epidemic. If it is meant to sound like a warning, your nick is enough!
Responsible comment is what we need. As for the infected refugees, we shall soon be informed by the authorities of the country concerned. Since you brought it to the website, perhaps you could follow up to alert us about the tests! Your concern is mine.
You and I should care for the audience so as to be positive contributors. Do not worry there is no wrong with me and I am open minded. I can deal even with vexing regime supporters.
    Thanks

    Ebola

Sorry, but the link in the comment section is a sort of (indirect) comment! I do not mean you endorse the whole package. If you are of the opinion it is not serious. Ok! Neither I want it to be serious.
