Recently, former diplomats of the government of Eritrea and others have formed a group called Forum for National Dialogue (FDN.) The topic is generating heated debates in the Eritrean social media circles. Here are my views.
1.At the core of any issue that every Eritrean, including many PFDJ members, agree is Eritrea is led by dictator Isaias and we need him be removed from power and be replaced by A GOVERNMENT THAT IS LEGALLY ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE. Let us mull over this as the main yardstick or principle that can’t be negotiated or changed under any circumstances. A lot of contours, misunderstandings on terminologies and lack of proper explanations have exacerbated our discourse. We need to define in clearer terms, than ‘xegenti’ ‘sur-mho lewti’ etc. CORE issue is ‘power should be returned to the people of Eritrea’ immaterial of the terms and strategies as long as we understand their meanings.
2. Now Mederek. According to their objective “To work as a catalyst in bringing together pro-democracy Eritreans inside and outside the country to replace the current dictatorship in Eritrea by an equitable governance structure based on a constitution that guarantees equal rights of all citizens, their democratic freedoms and human rights, equal access to social services, and equal opportunities to develop themselves and their country.”
3. So does Medrek advocate for transfer of power to the people of Eritrea or just change Isaias and keep the status quo (if that is ever possible)? It is not fair to put words on someone or some group just to project your own version. When some unfairly attacked EYSNS on false grounds, we objected that and it is not good to extend that to others. As far their press release show, (again please read it), there is nothing in Medrek that prove they wanted to keep the status quo. They clearly rejected Isaias and called for others to join the tide of change. They may advocate for peaceful means as much as possible but didn’t say ‘by all means’ should be rejected. They said their role is to be catalyst but if that is what they want to, we hope they be good catalysts. Again, I invite serious readers and activists to read the document and how it can help the overall movement for change. Our allegiance and struggle is for the people of Eritrea and hence we need to put them first.
4. In my humble opinion, we are better served and serve our people if we see the bigger picture of what we as people want and what is possible at this time. Focusing on personalities dilutes, obfuscates the message. For example, a lot have been said about Amb. Andebrahan Weldegergish. A lot us prefer if we come forward and openly tell us what his experiences was and what he wants to accomplish. This nation belongs as much to him as to all of us. We need to commend him for deciding to join when many other previous public officials didn’t want to. Some people have questions for Ambassador Anderberhan and the answers whether satisfactory or not should be given. If we seriously believe our nation is in great peril of demise, the issues that we think are big are not as big if we want to tackle them with candor and courage. I humbly urge Amb. Andebrahn to seize the opportunity and the spotlight to expound his views and enrich our opposition with lessons we can all learn from. I also urge his friends and Medrek organizers to encourage him as in my opinion the benefits outweigh the fears and concerns.
5. Engagement is single key issue. It should be encouraged in all sides. I am very optimistic with real and honest engagement; there is nothing that is impossible. At least you respect each other’s opinion and work in the minimum common issues such as advocacy, human rights, and refugees etc.
6. Conscientious and wise activists are deeply needed in these turbulent times. My main message for now is for our compatriots at EYSNS and Medrek. If we can gloss over the seemingly different or opposing views, you can find the end product we are all asking for is the same: which is ‘power should be returned to the people of Eritrea.’
7. In the end, MedreK will be assessed and judged on its subsequent actions, not in their statements. When one calls for engagement, one doesn’t mean or imply one has to accept everything said or believe it. You can reject it altogether if you will; but isn’t much wiser and more beneficial to reach out to groups; learn from their lessons; share their concerns; bring forth your concerns; find points of convergence; narrow points of divergences; and see if there is any area you can work together.
Please note that apart from the general goodwill we extend (or should extend) to any Eritrean who wants to give his/her two cents to the tidal wave of history of fighting the Isaias regime, some of us actually notice groups such as Medrek do have a potential to register tangible results especially in lobbying which I think is one of the opposition’s biggest weaknesses. The reason we are saying let us give them a chance is not merely to appear nice or moderate or because we are docile (let the records speak for themselves, if need be) but because we believe they can help in areas mentioned below and other areas that I am not aware of. Hence, in the hope of enriching the discourse, I would like to forward my brotherly recommendations for Medrek. My recommendations in a nutshell are the following. Medrek:-
- Need to use the spotlight to engage the opposition public using pal talks, facebook and Eritrean opposition media. It is proper to be open to public questions and comments as what you are aspiring to do is of matter of grave, national importance that will affect all of us as citizens. Granted some people have serious concerns and grievances but as the overriding objective is to save the nation from imminent peril, the issues and controversies will pale in comparison to what we have in common. Candor and courage compels you to open your doors. I encourage them repeatedly to be available for public forums.
- Engage with civic and political groups and activists who have special focus in lobbying the international community, the UN, USA and the EU to put pressure on the Isaias regime on the grounds of gross violations of human rights and/or human trafficking.
- There are swaths of areas of international laws and national laws that the Isaias regime has been routinely violating and that we need legal experts and lobbyists to challenge them using legal instruments at their disposal.
- Use your expertise, networks, resources and connections to expose the Isaias regime in international media and forums.
- Give special focus and attention to the plight of Eritrean refugees in neighboring countries, Northern Africa and Israel. Eritrean refugees are suffering and languishing and they need well-seasoned politicians and activists to advocate on their behalf.
- It bears repeating experienced lobbying is desperately needed. We hope to see Mederek put its legal/diplomatic expertise, experiences and resources to bridge the gap with a view to step up international pressure and sanctions on the Isaias regime.
- I urge you not to be fazed by controversies as it is not about groups or persons. Eritrean people have been subjected to unprecedented degree of persecution and atrocities and our nation is facing risk of total annihilation. We need to save it before it is too late. We need to act..now.
Finally, as Martin L. King said “we must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” We owe it to ourselves, to our history, to our people and to our nation to learn to live together. The bells of history are tolling for all of us to save our endeared nation from a certain demise, a nation we have paid untold sacrifices for that you personally can bear witness of. Let us save it..together.

To me it is clear the message sent by some idividuals to attack any one who left Isaias behind. It does’t matter how long they served him and served their country wishing to do better. But here is those who blinded by the dictator as he is good leader. Most of them they think no one but the dictator the only leader would be. this mentality is the main obstacle for the change needed.this is a well planned propoganda machine of the system set by Isaias. Which means whoever obey the dictator is an hero or good servant of the country, But at any time when some one from the high ranking people the defer inideas where our country headed. When any one of them deserted the dictator Sudden some people start to tell us that evryone of them they were criminals. What a game that would be. If they were concern citizens. I would say where were you why didn’t charge them when they were with the dictator. I understand ther is no rule of law with the dictator.I would forgive you for that. But for your accusation when they move to be part of the movement for change. I would try to bring you to the court for your base less accusation. you are trying to confuse some people but not for me I know where are you comming from. I am sure you don’t have a strong sheild for now enjoy with dictator. We will see you in a country with the rule of law.
/Athadena qoqah zeyfeletis Ay hadanayen/ While our country and everything in it were taken by the dictators hand with out Rule of Law for these long. Why are you bringing that kind of accusation against the minnors at this time. If you realy intersted citizen why don’t you lay charge aginst them while serving the dictator. brothers and sisters such accusation against those who wants to bring changes in our country whom ever they are we should welcome them with astrech hands not facing them with un founded charges. We should be aware this is the hand and minds of the dictator that is to bring division on the opposition.Therefore, my advice is to ignore those messegers of the evil.

ኣሕዋትን ኣሓትን ኤርትራውያን፡ እስከ ህድእ ንበል። ሰብሪ (ኣደብ) ንግበር። ሓንቲ ነገር ልቢ ክንብለላ እትግብኣና ጉዳይ ኣላ። ሎሚ ንኹሉ ንጉጅለ ህግደፍ ኣብ ምውቃዕ በትሪ ዘዋጣውጥ ዘበለ ሓይሊ፡ ሰብ ይኹን ሰይጣን፣ ዋላውን እቶም ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ታሪኻውያን ጸላእቲ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ምዃኖም ብቐጻሊ ዝምድረሎም ወያነ ይኹን ኣመሪካ ብዘየገድስ መርሓባ ክንብሎ ጥራይ እዩ ዘለና። ስለምንታይ እንተኢልኩም ድማኒ ካብዚ ኣጽዋርናን ሓይሊ ሰብናን ዓጢቑ ዘሎ ጉጅለ ሕሰም’ዚ ንላዕሊ ንምእላዩ ክብድሃና ዝኽእል ሓይሊ ንላዕሊ ክመጽእ ስለ ዘይክእል!
እዚ ጉጅለ’ዚ ነቲ ሓርነት ህዝቢ ከጓናጽፍ ዝግብኦ ሓይሊ መንእሰይ፡ ብዝተፈላለየ ምኽንያት መቊሑ ሒዙዎ ስለ ዘሎ ኣቐዲሙ እግርናን ኢድናን’ዩ ኣሲሩና ዘሎ። ብዝኾነ ሓይሊ ካብ ደገ መጺእካ ይወቓዕ ከይብሃልውን ንመን ኢኻ ክትወቅዕ? ንኣሕዋትካን ደቅኻን!? ከቢድ’ዩ። ባዕዳዊ ሓይሊ እንተኾይኑ ግን ከምቲ ዝሓለፈ ሃስያኡ ብሓደ ወገን ስለ ዚኾነ፡ ንሓርነትካን መሰልካን ዋጋ ንምኽፋል ዘማትእ የብሉን። ማለት ድርብ ወጽዓ የብሉን። ስለዚ፡ ነዚ ሕሱም ጉጅለ ብዘይደም ምፍሳስ ንምቕባሩ፡ ነቶም ምስኡ ዝሰርሑን ብቐረባ እከይ ተግባራቱ ዝፈልጡን ሰባት ፈቲኻ ከይፈተካ ምሕቋፎምን ምትብበዖምን ዕምሪ ምልኪ ኣብ ምሕጻር ስለ ዝሕግዝ ልቦና’ዩ።
በዚ መስረት ከኣ ንጉጅለ መድረኽውን ሕሉፍ ገበናቶም እናጸብጸብና ሕጂ ክንማጎቶም ዘርብሓና ኣይመስለንን። ባዕላቶም ልቦና ጌሮም ከም ዶ/ር ተወልደ (ወዲ ቫካሮ) ንህዝቦም ብዛዕባ’ቲ ምስ’ዚ ኣጽናቲ ስርዓት ኮይኖም ዝበደሉዎ በደል ይቕሬታ እንተ ሓቲተሞ፡ ብዘይካ ክብሪ ምርካብ ዝጉድኡዎ ነገር ዘሎ ኣይመስለንን። ይቕሬታ ከይሓቱ እንተሓንገዱን እንተተዓበዩንውን ሆሆ ከይበልካ፡ ብእሽታ (ብህድኣት) ቀስ ኢልካ፡ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ መሰረታዊ ለውጢ’ምበር ጽገና ስርዓት ምልኪ ከም ዘየድልዮ ምምካሮም እቲ ዝበለጸ መገዲ ይመስለኒ። ኣይፋል! ንህግደፍ ክንጽግኖ ኢና እንተ በሉውን ይቐጽሉ ግደፍዎም። ገለ ክፋል መኣዝን ናይዚ ካብ መሰረቱ ኣፍሪስና ክንሃንጾ ንደሊ ዘለና ህንጻ ሃገር ኣብ ምእላይ እንተ ሓጊዞሙናውን ነቲ ዝተረፈ ንምእላይ የቃልሉልና ስለ ዘለዉ ርብሓ ስለ ዚኾነ ግደፍዎም ብመገዶም ይስርሑ። እንጻብኦ እንኮ ጸላኢ ጉጅለ ህግደፍ ጥራይ ይኹን። ብዝተፈላለዩ ሓደስቲ ሓሳባት፡ ካብቲ ቀንዲ ዕላማና ከነንደልህጽ የብልናን። የቐንየለይ።

Brother, it’s naive to think Hidgef leaders can be persuaded to accept change that can benefit the people of Eritrea.
The Forto incident is a good example that they will never allow a change that removes them from power.
A fundamental change that eventually hands power to people while Hidgefites (Generals/SpyMaters) are included in a power sharing scheme, is not going to happen. All those who know these leaders are convinced beyond any doubt that, a deal with Higdef is just a waste of time, to say the least.

Brothers, let me say a word or two about Medrek. If someone has been beating the drum for the dictator for the last twenty years, trampling on people’s rights and blaming G15, then makes a U turn when he observes that the other side no longer serve his purpose and come to the opposition camp. Well and fine. But he should follow the rules of the game. He can not have the same rules he used ti have while he served the dictator. And what Andebrhan and his group is tryin to do is exactly the same. For these people to have acceptance as legitimate as leaders, they must disclose their past and show clearly that they repent for their past mistakes or may be crimes. They must have transparency and ask the public’s opinion. But what they are trying to do is the reverse. Instead of calling of seminars like Tewelde Vacaro they are trying to secretly collect some capable exfighters they thought could help them have a good public image as opponents of the regime and claim they have the mandate as leaders of a transitional government when the regime falls. They must know that without having an open hand acceptance by the people they can do nothing in such a way. The people are fed up with PFDJ secret party, secret meetings, rule by decree etc etc. As the “Kab hji zneqewe zbi’es neyehdreni” proverb goes, they have already shown that they do not stand for democracy and transparence even if they claim to be so. So, we challenge them that the struggle depends on the people not on a handfull of politicians who want to eat without washing their dirty hands. And to get the people’s mandate they must come down and sit with the people and discuss the basic issues of the country not look down on the people and give orders from above. I am sure they will finally come down and ask the masses or grass roots movements for support. Long live the Vacaro mass movement.

ANDEBRHAN IS A PERSON WHO CAN NEVER WORK IN A SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE. HE USED TO WRANGLE WITH THE FITEWRARI OR MANAJUS OF BET TMEHRTI SEWRA BECAUSE HE DID NOT WANT THEM TO DRINK TEA FROM THE COLLECTIVE THERMOS FLASK. THE KIDS WERE USED TO DO THAT WHILE BERAKI WAS HEAD OF THE SCHOOL. BUT THE STINGY ANDEBRHAN STOPPED THEM FROMDRINKING TEA. THE RESULT: THEY USED TO SNEAK AND DRINK BEHIND HIS BACK WHICH MADE HIM VER FURIOS. AND THIS FOR A CUP OF COFFEE.

I can observe that we are missing the main or core issue in most of the comments.
The issue is ” Are they against HIGDEF or not?” Yes they are against HIGDEF.
WE had been waiting the opposition to be united but instead of uniting they were discussing about power sharing before the power comes!!
The opposition did not learn from the mistakes of HIGDEF. For HIGDEF ” The winner takes it all” We won the war and we run the government LIKE INDA DUKAN!! The doctor should be led and managed by an illiterate!!
The tone of the opposition was not different.
Now what Medrek are saying is 1) We are not a party. 2) We are ex-HIGDEF officials who understood that it is corrupt and we are siding with the justice seeking people.
I love the way they put it and for me it is positive.
Let us avoid talking about persons. Let us talk about ideas!!!
Who ever is distorting this is intenstional because they know the potential of these individuals and they are trying to play around as like what they did with the other “oppositions”

Habte, first of all they are not against HIGDEF, you need to read and listen to them. They are talking about ISSAYAS’s power not about HIGDEF. They all for soft landing, i.e. reform.; just remove Issayas. They like their counterpart in Eritrea think that they know better than any Eritrean. Of course they are not party because they already are PFDJ! they have time and again said their opinion ‘even wedi Ali was PFDJ’.
Of course they can fight for what they believe in but they can not be trusted! Isn’t what they are saying what we were hearing in the early 1990’s. Do you really believe the ‘we have connection inside Eritrea’ who is it? Issayas?
And what potential are you talking about? the potential to ruin, destruct,and dictate? with Andebrahan as a chair (or even otherwise) I do not see any positive potential just because they are educated. Their track records are enough of us to question their integrity. Idea does not come from the air. Idea is cooked in the mind of a PERSON. The quality of the idea of a person depends on the personality, mentality and intentions of the person!

With due respect I do disagree with your article for various reasons. I understand your support to anybody who fight against the heinous criminal gangs of PFDJ no matter whether he/she was the main player of the system until recently. But there is a difference between anybody who is willing to resist the tyrant and a suspicious person or group. This group were PFDJ officials and they were the inner circle of the system’s movers and shakers and whether they were willful cooperators or not time will reveal it but to come from no where and trying to be seen as innocent concerned group is simply outrageous. They knew quite well their wicked nature that is why they prefer to do their business behind close door with very few chosen individuals. They have used the old trick of EPLF which select some individuals for one purpose to use them to do their dirty work.
As you trying to see it from different angle which you believe that they are high caliber diplomats who can make dramatic progress for the opposition, you are wrong. I have a doubt because those individual lack the basic principle of honesty and integrity demanded from professionals. They happen to be there not by merit but by being unquestioning obedience to their master. They were proven yes men of the dictator who were holding portfolio without authority for years. They are individuals who lack courage and principle, very clear from their track record pre/post independence. If you say they are reformed criminals let them come out to open and say sorry for association. No one is asked eye for eye, the people needs respect not such inflated ego which I know what is good for you type old way of EPLF/PFDJ. Everyone must be a stakeholder and be respected in equal terms.
They are not here to help elevate the life of our people from suffering. They are here to help themselves as usual driven with greed. If they are really concerned individuals why they don’t come out and join with existing mass movements such as wedi Vacaro or with other of their choice. Why they didn’t fellow the right Chanel for reconciliation. Those who believe they are a bonus to have them in the opposition because they are experienced x-diplomat is simply naivety. They are more of abstraction and liability for our unity. If there are decent people they should encourage to youths on how to fight and topple the system and input their diplomatic skill which I doubt they have. If they are that smart they had amended PFDJ when they were in it. What chance do they think they have from outside. For me none but they my have that unique crook nature of PFDJ deceiving innocents, to be seen as innocents, end off.
