Feruz shares her childhood memories with Sherifo

@Feruzlondon “I remember…………….18/09/01
As I sit in a chilly and crispy London, I can not help my self but think where must they be? And I also can not help but think, WHY? How did we get here? What happened to all the hope that Eritrea once had? I am sure there is hope on every Eritrean’s heart that one day, our beloved Eritrea will be a country where its people can live in peace where they are not terrorised and walking on egg shells, where there is food, electricity water and most importantly the rule of law.
September 18th 2001, is a sad day for me. I had only been in diaspora 9 months and was trying my very best to settle in to European life. September 11 twin towers attacks had only happened the week before and the world was buzzing as a result of it. However, among the Eritreans and friends of Eritreans, another sickening and tragic action was to take place. Did we see this coming? I certainly did not. I was too young to notice the politics that was going on inside my country. I was busy hanging with my friends on the streets of Asmara and drinking coffee in Bar Royal and trying to make excuse to go out clubbing.
Going back to that unforgettable day, I remember receiving a call from the then Eritrean consulate in Germany and informing me of the mass arrests that went on and I also remember thinking, Mahmoud Ahmed Sherifo is not going to survive a day of this.
I knew Mahmoud Sherifo growing up. He was the first to hold me when I was born at 7 months premature in the mountains of Sahel. My mother tells me that my father was too scared to hold me and (Sherifo) as he was known in Sahel mocked my father and just carried me like a piece of blanket.
Sherifo was a laid back kind of guy. However he had a very sharp brain and was good at predicting things. So could he not have predicted the monster they were creating in Isayas? Of course he did. When I asked him why my father went to prison 1988-1991 Sherifo said that ‘your father said to Isayas what we all have not been able to say to him’. He also promised to tell me all about it in due time. He never got the chance however I later found out that my father called DIA (Augusto Jose Pinochet) the army general and dictator of Chile back in 1988 and was imprisoned for 3 years as a result.
I grew up with Sherifo’s son Ibrahim and as I was older than him, I always used to make him cry by taking his things. Now, my heart breaks and aches for Ibrahim and his younger siblings. I am sure Ibrahim possesses the same kind of strength and courage as his parents and I hope that he is safe where ever he is.
My memory of Sherifo will never fade. I remember my last day in Asmara and I went to say good bye to him. I remember as a little girl asking him why he never drove a car, (Sherifo always had a driver), I remember Sherifo picking me up from Betemerty sewra and taking me to Hager (kifli Zena) as my father was in prison in 1988. I remember many, many things. And I am urging Eritreans around the globe to remember the prisons of conscious this Wednesday which marks the 12th year since they were unlawfully detained and remain detained with out trial. To those that are still under the mental chains of PFDJ, I say to you (Mehret yewredelkum).”

Feruz, May God be with U… you said it all. Our revolution from independence was meant for the good of the people.. the dictator kidnapped it for the worst use .. One day all other deki tegadelti and the close ones will give thier testimony, may Sherifos son Afa be the witness ( I dont know where he is)…

    • Suleiman Salim September 20, 2013

      “the dictator kidnapped it” !!!

That is the most stupid statement that I have ever heard.

ነቲ ባዕሉ ኮስኵሱ ዘዕበዮን ዘደልደሎን ሰውራ ጨውይዎ ኢልካ ምዝራብ ዓገብ እዩ።

      • MightyEmbasoyra September 20, 2013

Of course the “Kurdid” dictator kidnapped it. What else.
It is not only kidnapped it, it is taking it to ground. By the way, he already told you on his last interview that the country is almost bankrupt. These were some of the Q&As.
        Q. Mine income
        A. What mine? The country has a lot to pay and no money left.
        A. Agriculture
        A. Are you kidding me?
        Q. Energy?
        A. Almost nothing. What we have is not enough to do the basic lighting.
        Q. Water?
        A. You need to go to where the water is located – get the hell out of the country.
        Q. Infrastructure?
        A. Not that good
        Q. Medical?
        A. There are no good Drs.
        Q. Then, what is the plan?
        A. We are studying it.

He gave an F grade for every sector. So, what’s that you are expecting after this…?

            Salim,
A person who is supporting this Kurdid NiC has definitely lower IQ than who hates this dracula.
I was surprised when I read one of your comments that mentioned Calculus. If you had reached to that level, I said if, you should stop and think how to relate it to the real world. Even the first calculus, differential, has many applications that you can use and let you see that you are on the wrong side.

Tesfay T. is a hero to most (I said most because there are still people like you) Eritreans. He has a class and an honor.

    Dear Feruz
God be with you and your family. Don’t give up. One day we will be free of the dictator.
The questions, Why? How did we get to this point?, What went wrong? How can one man allowed to paralyzed a nation? How come those all smart Eritreans couldn’t figure this out and safe their people? These are the million dollar questions we can’t understand.
The key issue, to overcome this unbelievable reality in our conutry, we have to be united as one people against the dictator. In the meanwhile, you make sure you get your education. So, you can be ready in a moment of notice to help our people. After the usless dictator is gone, Eritrea will needs her children to revive her to life. We have a hard tasks ahead of us. We will have lots of mess to clean up. Feruz, take care.

    Dear Feruz,
Injustice for one is injustice for everyone and all that are suffering in the dungeons of the regime deserve justice and be allowed to defend themselves in the court of law,so does the G-15.
However,we got to remember that the disgusting tyrant we have at hand doesn’t possess some super natural ability to be what he is but its these monsters that we are calling for their release that made him what he is today.Injustice in Eritrea didn’t start yesteryear but it has been there since the creation of the shifta organization.Thousands of reformers and progressives had been assassinated and purged over those cursed years in front of their eyes. They didn’t only turn the other way but helped the monster in carrying out his dirty job.No wonder then, all the untold crimes and atrocities are off limit for all the officials of the shifta group including those who deserted the regime and live in exile currently. These are not what we used to call the mighty tegadeltti but cowards who lived and died in fear and that was why they made it wrong in dealing with the demon that they know their entire life.
Regardless of what they did, they still deserve justice.
    May God save Eritrea,

The solution is to apply Hammurabi law.

    An eye for an eye!

It’s the only way to liberate our land and our people!

Sherifo, and Isayas are the same!

Gaddafi and Isayas are the same!

HIGDEF and Gaddafi’s followers are the same!

The only solution to apply Libyan style.

    Apply Libyan style!

My brotherly advice . To honor your father and Mahmood Sherifo legacy is up to you to follow their steps
to memorize the positive contribution for the country .
Your story is too Eritrean which makes me regardless more proud than sad . Do not forget we won the fight
to have our own identity as Eritreans .

IPU continues to demand information on the fate of 11 Eritrean MPs who were arrested 12 years ago and have never been seen since. The MPs have had no contact whatsoever with the outside world, including their families and lawyers, since they were detained on 18 September 2001. They were arrested on unfounded allegations of conspiracy and attempting to overthrow the government after writing an open letter criticising the Eritrean President, Isaias Afwerki, and calling for “peaceful and democratic dialogue and the rule of law”. The MPs, ten men and one woman, included the country’s Labour Minister Mahmoud Ahmed Sherifo; two former foreign ministers, Halle Woldetensae and Petros Solomon; and the former army chief, Ogbe Abraha. None of the MPs has ever been formally charged or brought to trial – a flagrant breach of the Eritrean Constitution as well as the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. IPU believes the prolonged detention of the MPs without charge flies in the face of justice and human dignity. Despite persistent requests by IPU’s Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Eritrean government has refused to provide information about any of the detained MPs or their future, and there are serious concerns for their health. In 2010, unconfirmed and unofficial reports from a former prison guard who had fled Eritrea, stated that nine of the 11 MPs had died, chiefly due to inhumane prison conditions and lack of medical attention. Prisoners in Eritrea are often held in underground cells or shipping containers which are unbearably hot by day and freezing at night. Since independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea has been led by President Afwerki under the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). There have been no other parties or elections to the National Assembly.
