EU ‘appalled’ by migrant dead off Italy

The European Union's Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said she was "appalled" by reports that migrants had died trying to cross the Mediterranean to get to Italy as six more migrants died in a shipwreck

The European Union’s Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said she was “appalled” by reports that migrants had died trying to cross the Mediterranean to get to Italy as six more migrants died in a shipwreck on Sunday night.

“I am appalled by these new tragedies at sea and I express my condolences to the victims and their families,” she said in a statement on Sunday, adding that she would meet with Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano on Wednesday in Brussels to discuss the latest developments.

The Italian navy said on Monday that six bodies were recovered following a shipwreck off the Libyan coast on Sunday night, the third tragedy to hit immigrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean this weekend.

“Last night, north of the Libyan coast, with weather conditions deteriorating, a fishing boat carrying a large number of migrants capsized,” the navy said in a statement. Rescue workers managed to pull 364 migrants from the sea.

Earlier in the day, an Italian navy ship had approached a boat in difficulty and found 18 dead along with 73 survivors on board.

“I also thank the Italian authorities for the huge efforts put in place to assist and rescue thousands of migrants over the last days,” Mogherini said.

Italy’s navy, coast guard and merchant marine have rescued more than 3,500 people since Friday in the stretch of the Mediterranean between Sicily and the Libyan and Tunisian coasts.

Faced with the new crisis, Malmström again urged member states “to provide assistance to Mediterranean countries facing increased migratory and asylum pressure, in particular by resettling people from refugees’ camps outside the EU”.

Many of the migrants making the risky and often deadly journeys are refugees from Eritrea, Somalia and Syria, but there are also many arriving from across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

More than 100,000 migrants have landed in Italy so far this year, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR — far higher than the previous record of some 60,000 who arrived in 2011 at the height of the turmoil triggered by the Arab Spring revolutions.

Figures released at the end of July showed some 93,000 migrants had been rescued since the start of 2014.

The European Commission has said the refusal of member states to respond more favourably to asylum requests was fuelling the crisis.

It has suggested member states agree on creating humanitarian visas or deal with the requests at consulates in refugee camps and at points along migrants’ journeys.

“appalled” is not going to save life at this time. Urgent action is needed.

I lost the confidence of our people in diaspora not to reach at decisive approach on how to solve the problems
which need urgent resolution to our situations . We observed the set backs from repulsive forces to hold the
political process from progressing while such reports shows the daily grievance of families especially the
parents of those thousands who fled the country . Any time they hear any worrisome news it cause anxiety to
lead into mental state of distress and agony , which we all also know it can easily affects their health .
At this stage I believe only Eritreans inside the country are the hope to bring the anticipated change .
We can’t play politics with many graves at hand , it is wrong and immoral but unfortunately ignorance still
    exist among ourselves .

pfdj, instead of finding a solution to the root cause of the problem (i.e. lack of freedom, endless military service and poverty) they set a “SHOOT-TO-KILL” policy. Our people is suffering both from the mass exodus and also from the brutal policy. This government shall be removed soon. However, his deaf supporters are the obstacles. Also there is a wrong mind-set among most Eritreans. Instead of looking at the reality and fining a solution, we try to create something that does not exist. We have to first believe, that we are Africans, east Africans. we have to admit our real history and then we have to respect our culture and history. That culture and history is shared by other peoples too and we should strengthen our relationship with those who share the same culture, values etc. Once we accept that, it will not be difficult to negotiate with others and live in peace. They will also support our peace and economy. Our solidarity with all people and neighbors shall be strengthened. Our peoples hall be active players in this period of globalization. they should not be isolated and passively observe. This way we can avoid the existing problems

‘appalled’ what appalled? this is not the first time people died in this situation. What did they do with the bodies of the Lampadusa victims’ bodies? EU can not even manage to convince their friend DIA to allow the bodies to go home just to get buried. These people are only talk and comment people; nothing more. They never take the victims’ side. They talk and sympathize only -NO ACTION! They actually give money to dictators in order to change them. Dictators NEVER change. They have crossed the line when they decided to dictate instead of govern.
