ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Young and outspoken Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in Monday as Ethiopia’s prime minister, amid hopes he will be able to quell the sustained anti-government protests that have rocked Africa’s second most populous nation.
Abiy was elected by Ethiopia’s parliament, succeeding Hailemariam Desalegn who resigned in mid-February as a result of widespread protests that have taken the lives of several hundred people, mainly in the restive Oromia and Amhara regions.
“This is a historic moment,” said Abiy in his inaugural address to Ethiopian lawmakers. “This is high time for us to learn from our past mistakes and make up for all the wrongs done in the past . we understand there are a lots of problems that need to be solved with great urgency.”
Abiy apologized for the deaths of civilians in the violent protests. He said his administration will strive to solve grievances by discussion rather than by force, provide more space for opposition parties, fight corruption and focus on respect for rule of law.
The new leader said he aims to open up a fresh dialogue with arch-foe Eritrea and called upon Ethiopia’s diaspora to more actively take part in the country’s affairs.
Abiy is the first Oromo politician to become Ethiopia’s prime minister since the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front came to power in 1991. It is hoped he will be able to bring an end to the protests that have been raging since late 2015 to press for wider political freedoms and the release of opposition figures. The Oromo people, the largest ethnic group of Ethiopia’s 100 million people, have long felt marginalized both politically and economically.
A former Lieutenant Colonel in the army and head of Ethiopia’s Science and Technology ministry, Abiy, 42, has a reputation as an effective orator and reformer.
Many welcomed the new leader.
“I think this is a very important step toward the overall democratization and stability of the country,” said Kiya Tsegaye, a lawyer and political analyst. “But he needs the support of the people around him, especially top party officials to implement his reform measures.”
Prominent opposition leader Merara Gudina expressed cautious optimism over Abiy’s election, saying the future of Ethiopia’s peace and stability depends on the policies of the incoming leader and his party.
“What he aims to achieve depends on what his party allows him to do,” Merara said, adding that Abiy was elected by Ethiopia’s ruling party and not directly by the population through a general election. “But still it goes without saying that a change in personalities within the leadership may bring changes in terms of bringing better ideas that may ultimately lead to national reconciliation.”
Ethiopia’s Olympic gold medalist runner, Haile Gebrselassie, said the peaceful transfer of power is a win-win situation for all Ethiopians.
“The new leader’s election has answered many Ethiopians’ questions,” Haile told The Associated Press, saying that Abiy should implement his pledges without delay. “His inaugural address today has the ability to bring together not only Ethiopians, but countries in the region as well.”
Abiy will be Ethiopia’s third prime minister since the former military junta, the Derg, was overthrown in 1991.
Ethiopia in February declared its second state of emergency in two years amid the ongoing protests that effectively crippled transportation networks and forced the closure of businesses. On Saturday, Ethiopian officials said that more than 1,000 people have been detained since the latest emergency rule was put in place.
The U.S. Embassy in the capital, Addis Ababa, commended the peaceful transfer of power, saying it is the first time a living leader has handed over power in Ethiopia’s recent history.
“We stand ready to support the government’s rapid implementation of democratic and economic reforms and look forward to the lifting of the state of emergency,” the U.S. embassy said in an email sent to The Associated Press.

It’s astonishing Eretra’s and Eritreans’s future appears to be still dependent on Ethiopia. Why opposition including justice seekers don’t work to galvanize the people to bring the much needed change by themselves is an enigma to the world following events in Eretra for almost three decades now. Also Dr. Abiy is there to work under the EPRDF platform and policy.. Even Meles assumed uncontested leader in the party during his time was voted down when he proposed to negotiate while HIGDEF is still holdindg on to Badme. Unlike Eretra, decisions in Ethiopia are not made by one person but collectively by the party.leadership.

First let me thank you each and everyone of you. I have read all your written comments and I can not tell how excited I was/am still. In the morning I was thinking I shall write a short response for the comments written by brother Dani, but before I did that so many wonderful comments showered the website–including the wonderful poem by brother Simon. Brothers, honestly, I do admire you all for your dedication and of course, on the otherside that includes the immortal teklayor dawit, shilan, ……
I wish if I could have added a few lines or if not just a sentence under your appealing comments, but for one and one reason alone today I will try to focus on Teclay’s mouthful words. Since brother Festum have written a wonderful article about Shilanology or people who suffer form bipolarisim, I have restrained myself not go around it again. As we all know no matter how we appeal the website the problem still exisists I mean “Teklaysim.” Since Teklay came to archive.assenna.com I had been always asking who really is this guy? What is his mission? Who are his targets? Why does he use specific words, persistently, occasionally, seldom, rarely, the list goes on? I am sure the finding might not be a big surprise for many of you but it woth knowing—-my preliminary founding goes as follows:
Q 1. Who is Teklay? The answer who care about him.
Q 2. What is Teklay trying to accomplish? Wow! this is a serious question and it has layers and layers of answers. Teklay is here for a mission > to create a confusion, diversion, chaos among justice seekers, Teklay is on a mission to kill not two birds with one stone but more than ten if he could. To do so Teklay knows to split hair. Behind Teklay there are many hidden big heads.
Q 3. Who are whose targets? Teklay is only a mail delivery boy. He has addresses and he delivers the message as directed. The question is the mail is addressed to some individuals only but the content is to all justice seekers. To make myself clear, the address could be to: K. Tewolde, Simon G, Dani, Nahon, Almaz, Festum, meretse, amanuels, but what matters the missing address or c/o. is to all justice seekers. So, again, the message has nothing to do with above named individuals, it has got to do with the many, many nationals (in fact > than 75% of the entire population).

Q 4. What kind of words does he use persistently use? Bear with me- since I found this question very important, before I tried to answer it I decided to make some research and I did. At least I was forced to reread twoo books that I had in my shelf— the book “Left to Tell” written Immaculee Ilibagiza and “Hotel Rwanda”, written by, Paul Rusesabagina. In these two books it seems that I found the answer to my question why Teklay persistently use profane words agains specific individuals, religion, religion and an organization which does not exisit now. Teklay with his own words ELF (as an organization and it previous members) as RPF rebels, hatelaguzay (cockroaches) moslems as blood thirst or poisonous collectively as Tutsis again, …the lsit goes on and on.
Here is what once Immaculee wrote to her readers and I quote …” when I entered into my classroom one Hutu student cried “help me! Help me! Oh my God, help! It is an RPF soldier—he has come to kill us, eat us, …. he has horns on his head!” And very soon the entire campus soon echoed with her terrified screams. I magine now what Teklay is constantly doing –compare ELF with RPF, he bllod thirsty, killers, village burners, wild animals without horns. The Hatelaguzays are always there colored as Tutsis against Hutus. According to his boss these guys are cocraches and they should be terminated. Last but least at times they are also poisonous snakes. This is exactly what Radio Rwanda preached before the genocide begins. Kill all the cockroaches and the snakes including the young ones, for a sake is a snake even if it is a little one. Aren’t those words Teklay’s favorite words? Folks Teklay is on a mission. He is the mericnary of hgdf. The bottom line is Telaysim is not a matter of bipolar or tripolar. He is on a covert operation. We are talking about media here. I would conclude my comments with what brother Daniolo said last week—

Let peace , love and tolerance reign in our region particularly speaking in ERITREA , ETHIOPIA , SUDAN AND SOMOLIA .
To entertain at others suffering expense has been their wicked agenda and we have
seen the damage done . It takes courage to speak up against wrong deeds . Incase
these remnants with corrupted mind set , we showed them leniency to cross the line
from the beginning except few commentators .
Brother Meretse , you use to defend them when I was criticizing their attempts to bring
religious and regional issues . You remember last year the unnecessary discussions
about Jeberti , lowlanders and to take side with these terefmeref including Rezen which
you tried to welcome his return in assenna forum like nothing happened .
I know K. Tewelde wasn’t in this forum at that time .
Back then true compatriots like Selemawi , Ghenet , Eritrawit and others were great advocates for Eritrean interest to confront such intruders and Simon , Sol , Danillo
were part of same group who never change until now . We used to fight them back .
Nothing personal but I prefer to associate with truthful people who make me feel
comfortable .

I still have a lot of respect to the comment written below, even though some shallow minded ones started to pigeonhole with anyone they see negatively who is not a member of their “ganta”. The writers is right to say we have lot to learn from the Oromo and Ethiopian people:

Thanks to the social engineer ab adi halo and his gang,Eritreans today are scattered all over the globe and can speak a myriad of languages from Hebrew,Turkish,Farsi,Hindu..to German,Dutch,French,Mandarin……..however Simon,the is one dialect they can speak fluently but cannot be able to communicate with one another,can you guess? Is this what Hagos is fussing about? All we have to do is vote and pick which language suits us to understand each other better,otherwise we going to end up like Babylonians.

The irony is,they are teaching the dialect to their little children born in diaspora and indoctrinating the pristine young mind with a language that they can’t apply for a job or even buy a candy bar in their neighborhood grocery store. Don’t get me wrong I am not against passing ones heritage to the offspring.
