Addis Ababa — The Ethiopian government on Monday has reiterated its readiness to hold peace talks with Eritrea to resolve their decades-long border dispute

During his meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York, the Ethiopian Minister of foreign Affairs Tedros Adhanom accused the Eritrean government of refusing to engage in peace talks.

Adhanom said his country is ready to sit down for direct negotiations with Eritrea without any preconditions regarding to level, time or venue.

But the Ethiopian top diplomat stressed “the belligerent party opposed to these talks has always been the Eritrean side”.

According to the ministry of foreign Affairs, Tedros expressed solidarity with the people of Eritrea whom he said are continuously suffering due the regime’s “brutality and obstinacy to peace”.

Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a border war in 1998-2000 that has killed an estimated 70,000 people.

The two East African adversaries remain at loggerheads since the disputed key town of Badme had been awarded to Eritrea by an international border commission.

Ethiopia’s current leader Hailemariam Desalegn, who assumed power shortly after longtime ruler Meles Zenawi died in August said last year that he was willing to hold face-to-face talks with Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki, even if he had to travel to the Asmara.

However, the Eritrean government has yet to respond to the offer.

Asmara has in the past said that Ethiopia should first withdraw its troops from the flashpoint border town of Badme before resuming to peace talks.

    • Misghina May 1, 2013

Yes Dialogue about what ????? !!!!!!

      • Zola May 1, 2013

Yes! No need of dialogue. We in Ethiopia are much better off under the current situation as well 🙂

  • Meles May 1, 2013

Final and binding means no need to revisit the case again. Ethiopia should understand the rule of law. If Ethiopia had upper hand over Eritrea why did Meles signed the peace deal.

So are you happy with the present situation? I don’t blame you. You might be one of the beneficiaries of the no war no peace situation. Our people though are suffering at the hands of a cery cruel and lunatic ‘Ebud Kelbi’. They need a reprieve.

Eritrean land that was virtually demarcated by the EEBC belongs to Eritrea, not Isaias. Why renegotiate a decision that was passed by the International court? The message that I am getting is Isaias should renegotiate because he is weak. That is a lousy idea. EPLF did not negotiate on the independence of Eritrea even during the dark days. The assumption that we should negotiate because we do not have the military power to push the Ethiopians from our land is defeatism. If we have not the power today we should work to create it. Being an opposition does not mean working against the interests of Eritrea. It is working for Eritrea. Eritrea will not negotiate with a government that occupies its land regardless the binding and legal verdict. Eritreans may have disagreements on different issues. However when it comes to the border problem we are one.

      Hagerawi,

Pay attention to the words that they are using. It is not simple talks but NEGOTIATIONS that they are demanding. They think they are smart.

    Do we have a president????

    • A.A YASSIN May 1, 2013

Your president MELES ZENAWI is dead. In that sense you do not have a president. IDA, were you hibernating somewhere for the last two years? Sn’At yhabki!!

      • ida May 1, 2013

I was talking about the drunk, and absent president. He always asks “what democracy, what voting?” I will not be surprised if he answers to this blog “what diplomacy?” For your info, I am Eritrean.

There is nothing to talk about. What’s there to talk about????? The Hague verdict is in. First, Ethiopia needs to vacate all sovereign Eritrean territories. Second, Ethiopia needs to allow demarcation to proceed.

Then we can have a normal neighborly relations. Otherwise, no self-respecting Eritrean will accept the fact that sovereign Eritrean territories are being held by TPLF.

    • Zola May 1, 2013

People, our problem is much more than border issue. You know this deep down in your heart, I would guess. This being so, talking of borders, we in Ethiopia believe that the Hague agreement has been invalidated when Eritrea kicked of the peace mission, one of the conditions for the demarcation. If you still expect the Ethiopian government to hand over the iconic Badme, you are fooling yourself. The town is not as such important to us, but its history of injustice, which carries with it the thousands of lives lost under the unprovoked arrogant invasion from your side. Returning it therefore will never happen in the absence of a comprehensive peace accord. The best scenario to expect would be the continuation of the current no peace no war state.

      • A.A YASSIN May 1, 2013

“Returning it therefore will never happen in the absence of a comprehensive peace accord.”

What do you mean by COMPREHENSIVE PEACE ACCORD?
