When a boat carrying 500 asylum seekers sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa, it moved Michael Adonai to create the works featured in his Altona exhibition titled I did not choose to be a refugee.
Eritrea-born Adonai is a winner of his country’s top art prize. He has exhibited internationally, including at a United Nations-sponsored global art show in New York.
In 1977, aged 15, Adonai joined the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. Much of his early work centres on his experiences of war.
Adonai, who lives in Werribee, said that his latest works paid tribute to the 359 asylum seekers who died in the sea on October 3.
“In particular, the exhibition pays homage to an Eritrean woman, seven months pregnant, who prematurely gave birth to a baby boy while drowning.
“When rescue divers pulled them from the sea bed, the mother and baby were still connected by the umbilical cord.”
Adonai’s exhibition will be at Altona’s Joel Gallery from June 14-27. The Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre is $1000 shy of the fundsneeded to frame Adonai’s pieces.
Centre manager Jill Bilston said it was a coup to secure Adonai’s solo exhibition.
“He has had exhibitions in New York, Washington and several European countries,” she said.
“We are so proud to have this exhibition in Altona.
“So far, the centre has received two lots of funding totalling $1500. We need another $1000 to enable all his work to be framed to a high standard.”
The exhibition is supported by Hobsons Bay council and Multicultural Arts Victoria. Adonai now works with Wyndham council to share his skills with aspiring young artists.

now Michael Adonal like our brother Amanuel Eyasu is a true Eritrean! they are gifted but they use their gift to be the voice of the voiceless not to make money and to stand beside dictatorship’s agents. they are the people. they feel what the people feels and they cry for the people when the people is forbidden to cry. All Eritreans in Australia please brothers and sisters go and show your appreciation to our brother this brilliant artist and conscious individual. and tell him the ERITREAN MOTHER who could not cry just like any other mother during child birth cried when she heard Amanuel Eyasu read his poem. And now she is crying when she gets to see your painting and when she hears you talk about her. you my brothers make her feel as she should: a woman who went through a lot while carrying the future inside her, at times frightened and hopeless all the while hoping against hope that she simply has to make it through for the sake of the future she carried for months. thank you

We would support you, this a great job. I wonder if you could set up an Eritrean international artist association. I am hoping lot of Eritreans could come up and contribute for the development of art. ‘I donot want to be a refugee’ is very attractive and explanatory title. I like it.
Art could play great role to tackle dictatorial regime not only in Eritrea but also around africa. The suffering of Eritreans around the world is limitless and needs world intellectuals attention. Issais is a mad leader who have serious mental health issue but where could be taken for treatment unless he takes the intitative himself rather than by the opposition.
I would like to see more work from you and try to show it around the world. I wish if you could arrange one in UK.

In any society artists(be it singers, painters, poets etc) have always played a very important role either in promoting progress and justice or siding with the oppressors. Michael you are an asset of the people of eritrea and for sure if we all contribute whatever we can eritrea will soon be free from the despot and his lackeys. Well done.

So proud…so proud….this title gives every eritrean and other people to know about this evil dictator who pushes out the youth, the old and even children from their beloved country and families.all these hardships will go away once we have a real eritrean leader who is humble and help the people to their full potential then the eritrean people develop their country in rvery aspect.the evil dictator is always happy to see the destruction of our people and country.
