Excellency Foreign Minister Westerwell,

We write this urgent letter to you in order to bring your attention a matter of great concern for Eritrean all over the world.

We have become aware of the fact that the President of Eritrea and his entourage will be transiting through the Federal Republic of Germany after attending the 66 UN General Assembly just completed in New York.

The fact that the president is passing through Germany to return to Eritrea is not our immediate concern. But the fact that the President is going to organize a seminar for Eritreans in Germany this weekend has forced us to address your office with our sincere concern.

Excellency,

We feel that allowing President Isaias unwarranted opportunities to organize a seminar in your country while the European Parliament Resolution on Eritrea: the case of Isaak Dawit on 13-9-2011. The resolution states:

“Whereas thousands of Eritreans are incarcerated without charge, fair trial or access to their lawyers or families, among them high ranking members of the ruling party following their public criticism against president Isayas Afeworki in 2001”

The resolution:

“Calls on the Council to urgently consider applying targeted sanctions on relevant Eritrean authorities including visa restrictions for President Afewerki on travelling to the EU; and calls on the Council to unilaterally suspend development assistance until the government of Eritrea respond to the EU demand;”

Allowing the President of Eritrea to conduct a meeting inside Germany contrary to the spirit of the EU resolution as well as knowing the fact that the UNSC is deliberating to further reinforce UN Security Council Resolution 1907 – the 2009 sanction imposed on the Eritrean government for supporting the terrorist group Al-Shabaab of Somalia- because the regime has failed completely to comply with the resolution.

We appeal to your Excellency to do everything possible to preempt the planned meeting and send a strong signal to the leadership of the Eritrean government to change its behavior and conduct itself according to international standard and comply with all EU and UN resolutions.

We will share this letter with all Eritrean Human Rights groups.

With the utmost appreciation for your help in this matter,

Sincerely,

Seyoum Tesfaye

Chairman of Eritrean Global Solidarity

Since you are the “flavor of the month” and you got a big microphone, I like you to interview the following people Ema Hawey:

    1) Meskere.net’s editor, Alem Goitom on his not so clear positions and if he considers himself oppostion or pro-government,
    2) Yosief G/Hiwet on his hardline position against the struggle for independence,
    3) Ali Salim and Semere Tesfay on thier religion-based infighting
    4) Find Muhyedin Shengeb and see if he is willing to say few words. Out of the many who abandoned the GoE, he is the only one that’s been very very quiet.
    5) We won’t be bored to hear the Asmarino & Awate people either. They can tell us what plans they have to expand or shrink their websites.
    6) We would be honored to hear from one of the most respected people – Elsa Chirum.
    7) I know this is impossible but let me give it a long shot: interview Sophie T/Mariam or any one of the government’s ardent supporters (not abdi of course, we have heard enough from him already 🙂

      Weldit,

I say kudos to the idea. Sure enough, Amanuel is stealing the lime light. As much as Ali Salim is a character on the screen or somebody’s double, he could be counted out when the curious mind would want to see Yosief Gebrehiwet on the ‘show’ as the others are less significant if not irrelevant.

I forgot to add the ever courageous Elsa Chirum in tandem with Yosief Gebrehiwet. Ma bad.

This is what I call a pro-active leadership. Well done. No patronizing intended.
