Eritrea Under Fire for Righs Abuses at U.N. Review

(AFP) Geneva — Enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and torture were just a few of the violations Eritrea was accused of during a UN review of its human rights record Monday.

Diplomats gathered at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva condemned the isolated and autocratic country’s brutal repression of basic rights, charging the lack of freedom was prompting a mass exodus.

The government of Eritrea’s “widespread violation of human rights and the lack of prospects for participatory democracy contribute to large numbers of Eritreans fleeing the country,” U.S. representative Peter Mulrean told the assembly.

He was echoing the concerns of many of the 70 state representatives who spoke at Eritrea’s so-called Universal Periodic Review, which all 193 U.N. countries must undergo every four years.

Chile and others urged the country to probe all reports of enforced disappearances, Denmark said it had done far too little to eliminate torture, while Estonia lamented the “disregard of freedom of expression.”

Tesfamichael Gerahtu, Eritrea’s ambassador to Britain, batted away the slew of charges, insisting that if anything was limiting human rights in Eritrea, it was the “unjustified sanctions” imposed on the country by the international community.

“To add insult to injury, Eritrea has been subjected to a litany of accusations of gross violations of human rights,… (that) are mainly motivated by sinister political agendas,” he told the council.

Reporters Without Borders has ranked it the worst country in the world for press freedom, but Gerahtu insisted “There is no media censorship in Eritrea.”

He said the 10 journalists and 11 opposition politicians arrested in a 2001 crackdown — many of whom have since died in custody while others are still being held in secrete locations “were not detained because they expressed their ideas, (but because of) treason.”

“I wish there had been a lie-detector device there. It was a mockery,” exiled Eritrean journalist and writer Dessale Berekhet Abraham told AFP after listening to the session.

The 38-year-old who now lives in Norway said he knew Gerahtu well — he was once his teacher at Eritrea’s Revolution School — and that he didn’t take the “lies” personally.

“What else could he say if he wants to go back to Eritrea?” he asked.

Gerahtu meanwhile called on the U.N. diplomats to focus on Eritrea’s progress in areas like reducing maternal and child mortality rates and in fighting HIV, as well as its 2007 law banning female genital mutilation.

And, he said, the country would hold its first free elections since it won independence from Ethiopia in 1993 and implement a 1997 constitution once the threats against its “national security” had dissipated.

“Eritrea’s security situation does not and never has justified the denial of basic human rights to its people,” the British representative said.

Only when the country has a democratically elected government and a constitution that ensures basic rights “will Eritreans stop fleeing,” he added.

The U.N. refugee agency has registered more than 300,000 Eritreans refugees in neighboring countries, with thousands fleeing every month, often under very dangerous conditions.

Eritreans, along with Somalis, accounted for most of the more than 300 migrants who perished in a boat tragedy off Italy’s Lampedusa last October.

Wedi Geratu shame on you. You are blood les layer like your mad master Isayas. You better die than to try to defend the undefedable. You are still lying after the death of 357 innocent Eritreans in the see far from home. You are completely rubbish.
Your days are over, we will bring you to justice very soon.
Deki Ere what are you waiting for?????

  • david February 4, 2014

It is a shame for the Ambassador not to tell the truth.
He is like Isayas living in a dream world. How can you forget all our brothers and sisters who died for our freedom and the once who are still dying and scattered all over the world? Do you thing the 30 years straggle was for you and Isayas to live in comfort?
How can you forget our brothers and sisters who are in prison for life who fought for their country?
Are you saying there is freedom of press? You can not full the world any longer, instead you should help the criminal government to open his eyes while there is time. Stop blaming every one but your government. May God bless our people and our county.

  • Michael Ghebre February 4, 2014

Wedi Gerahtu, are you serious? Or you were told by your master to speak a rubbish language? Now I will ask to the public, how do you know when Isaias and his henchmen are lying? The answer is when they open their mouth. The people who are running Eritrea are shameless. Do they think we were born yesterday?

  • Tamrat Tamrat February 4, 2014

In 1989, 1989 and 1990 derg leaders accepted that they were the exact opposite to what the mass wanted as a goal. The worest thing was that what i heared from both tplf and eplf through their propaganda was not either some thing to Dance about. Infact it was a horrible nightmare how to think about what the feuture brings about. Those who danced, sang, and went too happy were the Lucky ones because at least they got some thing to chear about. I felt sad realy. The saddest thing for me was how could any one take the happiness from me on the fall of derg. Was taht realy possible? How far went the damage done by derg that i came to this dead end Choice?

According the propagandas and the programs of both tplf and eplf what i had to expet was a one United Eritrea which came no more my country and multitudes and undifined many small countries Down the South border of Eritrea. Exactly at 1991 this was the fact. Period.

Soon the ethiopians who were in Eritrea killed or deported to addis the New Ethiopia. Except the happy News both in Asmara and mekele there was nothing going on to Cheer for the rest of the People. Amid these chaos Things changed abrubtly. tplf stopped all of a sudden its ‘meda’ propaganda and started Ethiopia, Ethioopia and to make it more exciting tplf including isaias stared to say Ethiopia. Regardless what eplf said the number of eritreans who live out side of their killil out numbered all other ethnic gorups except amhara People so eplf used this to its advantage and helped the tigrians to controll and rule their New Ethiopia. Can you imagine eritreans were more ethiopian than tigrians before at least 1993.

Soon both eris and tigris in addis have come up With a New and ambitious economical system called by us ‘all Eritrea has is only for eplf and all ethiopia has for only eplf and eplf. The problem of this economical vision was the lack of politics whic supprts it. And the consquence was boom 1998 war. And immidiatley eplf came back to its old policy ie there is no country called ethiopia. So it has to liberate the multitude nations South of Eritrea. And tplf must change gears and must defend Ethiopia and it unity.

So i sit and ponder now how many millions eritreans come to my situation. they dont want eplf continues and the gloomy future awaiting. Has it been so long that eri People let eplf to damage this far? How come we (what eve happens in Eritrea affect ethiopia) fall to the same trapp again? With out stopping what ever we are occupied With is not a time to ask ourselves what wrong With us as a Group!

    • Gebez February 4, 2014

      TamTam,
Look what you just said and think twice about it:”eritreans were more ethiopian than tigrians before at least 1993.”
Are you in your right mind man? Eritreans fought for decades AGAINST being labeled as Ethiopians and after their victory,99.8% of them BURNT their Ethiopian I.D. cards on fire!! Their primary goal became destroying anything that could remind them of Ethiopia including destroying statues of Ethiopian war commanders of the 19th century and instead replacing it even worse with statues of Italian commanders. And do not forget also what used to happen during the many Ethio-Italian wars and who was doing what for whom. At the pick of that, they even invaded Ethiopia in 1998.(Do not forget that this war was the biggest danger Ethiopia has ever faced in its history. There is no exaggeration here. Had Ethiopia lost the war, it would never continue as a nation. The goal was to disintegrate it in to many waring pieces and destroy it forever). While on the opposite, Tigraians are at the NUCLEUS of Ethiopianism from every perspective. So, I am sure after thinking twice, you will regret of what you said as it is may be the biggest glitch you might ever have said.

      • Tamrat Tamrat February 4, 2014

I speak of eritreans i know. I was not in Nakfa fighting shabia i couldnt argue about that. When most of Ethiopians talk about eritreans they talk about the eritreans we know from Our negighberhood. Those of you who never been in Ethiopia before 1993 have no Clue at all why ethiopians have unexpected say the way i do. I will make it easy for you to understand it. Who is more eritrean now the tigrinya or afar, the muslim or the orthodox christian? Based on Your answer then i cofirm you eritreans in Ethiopia were more ethiopians than tigre peopl. From Dessie to moyale and diredewa eri-ethiopians were supporting, helping to make the net work of ruling for tplf. Many eritreans went bannana not on the now relation of tplf and eplf not because of misunderstanding how tplf sacrifice millions tigrians (the number of tigrians sacrificed are more than eritreans or tigrinya prople) but the eritreans felt betraid for helping woyane to rule all over ethiopia.

Once in a while it is healthy to come out of propaganda and see reality no matter how bitter it its.

See the policy of eplf, first there is no country called Ethiopia, dismantel ethiopia. And when eplf saw its advantage use its own People to unire Ethiopia. Dont get me wrong i dont want to destroy Ethiopia. But how many somaliis, oromos, gambellas, specially afars must perish on the sudden policy change fro eplf and tplf side. Kill the derg-ethiopia (which includes eri) and create woyane ethiopia based on eirs advantage off course including tplf. And damen well all of you know such kind of manuver wouldnt be done With the multitudes ethnic based militias who swarmed the Whole nation. They were used to fight derg and must be wiped for the New ethiopia. Was this arrangement good for eplf, defintly. could that continue. nopp! Boooom war. After all that talk of 30 years war and taking mearly 7years rest and engaing in war shows you how bullshit talk you are talking about. You have to be serious to lead millions of People.

The worst shame is again after the New war eplf went to its original policy. Dismantel ethiopia. Do you see how eritreans are draged again back to ethi-thing.

But my point is not lecture. my point is how eritreans came to the dead end like ethiopians at the end of 1980s.

Dont try to change the subject.

        • Gebez February 5, 2014

I really have no idea what you are talking about. My point was simple. I just wanted to express my shock to you when you said that Eritreans were more Ethiopians than Tigraians. BTW, when we talk about Eritreans, it is not just the Bihere-Tigrigna. It includes more than 9 language groups(not ethnic groups as they say. There are more than 26 tribe and clan groups in Eritrea) including the Rashaidas. So, when you said that these people were more ethiopians than Tigraians, anybody would be shocked. And I told you the reasons why I do not agree. TamTam, may be you agree with what Mr. Sebhat Nega said some months before to a local private newspaper in Addis. He had said that Eritreans have more ethiopian feelings than any ethiopian. lol. Are you guys in your right mind? If you say this infront of any eritrean, you would enjoy all kinds of insults.

      • Tamrat Tamrat February 5, 2014

Yes, eplf waged the war to finish Ethiopia the way it planned it before 1990. This time With more devilish thought to panish tigrians for not alloing shabia to suck the economy of Ethiopia. Eplf plan was Clear. Eplf knew how tplf and eplf was doing against the rest ethnic Groups. And most of ethiiopians knew the responsibility was tplfs. What eplf wanted was when it attacked tigray, the rest of Liberation fronts from South attack tplf and bloodshade every were and party party in the ‘civilize eritre’ while we become another Rwanda. This much is the devilish act of eplf. You see we are not that idiots when we say Our unity is very very important wouldnt give it a chance People like shabia mess With it. We know shabia very well from the very begining. what we are still in shock the behviour of tplf following the man-eter policy of shabia.

I make it Crystal Clear. shabia planned its success on the distruction of Ethiopia.

What a shame. What was Iseyas expecting? Wedi Gerahtu how long are you going to bear the humiliation? You would rather find some other job men! May be something like ‘a dog walker’ or the other way round if the dogs are trained. I mean it is a decent job considering your intellectual and moral values if you pass your CRB check of course.
I am sure your master is sweeting in Massawa now. People like Sophia Tesfamariam will soon fly to cool him with wet towels. You are all pathetic, shameless puppets of PFDJ. No wonder you work for Iseyas ‘the labourer is worth his hire’ HUTURAT. Your days are counted you will curse the day you joined this junta.

  • david February 4, 2014

The Ambassador might have a home in Eritrea and he is trying to save his home by supporting the government. It is not only him but also a lot of Eritreans who do not tell the truth. We all need to stand together for our freedom. We are all free people but mentally still slaves, afraid to stand for our own right. Dejazmach Abraha Tessema the son of Ras Tessema Asberom the Lion of Maghreba already predicted this was going to happen. We all need to know our history because history is repeating itself again.

  • Genet February 4, 2014

    Godamat
You are very funny! “Risi akat” my older brother used to say that.
    Thanks for the laugh.
But brother, get out of your tunnel vision about Isayas. He is taking you for a rid.
    Genet

    • Godamat February 5, 2014

      Geni, risi akat,

Your older brother must be the smarter one then. May be he took all the brains including your share, as you don’t seem to have anything underneath that akat risi. No brain, no common sense, no nothing. Just empty shell!

Now, here is what I asked you at the beginning. Ask your brother to help you, if you want, try to focus and give a straight answer. No hanky panky ok?
“..Geni, common now! tell me the truth, do you have balls? Common now tell me if it doesn’t bother you, even slightly, the fact that UN have no courage, decency power to enforce its own ruling. The “Eritrean Woyanie Border ruling” (EEBC). Tell me if it doesn’t bother you the fact that on one hand it is the UN who is crippling Eritrea, by not enforcing its ruling and imposing it on the aggressor Ethiopia, imposing unjustified sanction etc, while at the same time it pretends to be guarantor of human right….”

In short, the question in simple terms is “ Do you have some balls?”,…or your brother took all of it..

      • Genet February 5, 2014

        Godamat
I thought you knew somthing about “akat”. I guss not.
When it comes to Eriteran issue and the mess we are in,
I believe problem solving process should have started from inside out. Isayas could have started the solution by empowering Eritrean inside the country first. If one is completley deystroying his/her own house, he/she would not be creadible complaining about unfair treatment by outsiders. since you deystroyed your own house, why do you expect other to care. All Eritreans know the world is not only unfair, it is a Dog eats Dog world. Godamat, What do you think Isayas should do going forword if the UN doesn’t solve the border issue? Do you know how many countries are out there in the world with not so good border issues? We don’t see them using foreign forces for police work. We don’t see them ignoring their peoples cry for help. We don’t see them running their countrty without rules of law. Eritrea is a country with a unique strategic geographical sites. Isayas could have used that as leverage to negotiate any deal for himself and Eritrea. Now, I am afraid it is too late for him. Believe me I not happy with UN’s actions. But I know, they are in the business of politics. We need to do some reflection of our own action and the damaged we did to our own people and country.
        Genet

        • Godamat February 5, 2014

          Risi Akat,

I thought I told you No hanky panky stuff. Try again. Here is a tip. Here, let me simplify it for you (Like “for the Dummy” or “for risi akat”)

“…tell me if it doesn’t bother you, even slightly, the fact that UN have no courage, decency power to enforce its own ruling.

Now, focus on that and reply. Don’t bullshit about Issayas or any thing now. Think in terms of the court ruling of the border and woyanie, and the fact that Eritrea is the one on the right hand side of justice. Now, focus and talk what feeling you feel realizing Eritrea being abused and bullied.

          Again, no bullshit, ok?

          Go now…

          • Godamat February 5, 2014

Don’t reply in a generic “The world is unfair” or that kind of crap. Specifically talk about, Woyanie’s aggression, UN’s purposely intending to cripple Eritrea, not only by not enforcing its ruling, but also adding more unjust stuff like sanction, and all this crap about HR.

Now, think like an Eritrean (You are Eritrean , right?) and show me that you are ANGRY and FURIOUS because your nation is being bullied, being choked and being manipulated – just because it abide by law. (Ruling of the border)

            Go now….

          • Genet February 5, 2014

            What a moron!
            Genet

          • Godamat February 6, 2014

            Geni Risi akat,

Exactly! no balls, no brain, no substance, ….only idiocy, stupidity…..etc.

I am signing out. You are simply useless and a waste of time

            Tata
