ENCDC Congress and the Absence of News Coverage

The long anticipated event of the Eritrean National Commission for Democratic Change’s (ENCDC) congress in Awasa, Ethiopia is already history. It has been almost a week since the final day of the congress. What is extremely strange is the lack or the absence of news coverage about the congress in all the opposition websites. It appears some of the opposition websites appear to be non-functional and some do not care to publish news coverage although their websites appear to be operational. It is especially mind boggling to see the Awate.com and Assena.com are not operational at the same time. I am not sure if Assena and Awate websites were breached with dangerous virus or Trojan horse or if it is a voluntary preplanned website re-construction or overhaul in a time of high information demand from many stakeholders. At least, Assena was on top of things about the congress in Awasa up to the point of malfunction, but if he has problem with the website unexpectedly, he should have sent information to his readers and listeners through other means such as announcing in Paltalk rooms.

As for Awate, I do not see any legitimate excuse for not using other media outlets such as EDA, Togoruba, Asmarino websites if his website was breached or not working due to other reasons. In fact, he was not passing along any information in the first week of the congress while his website was operational either. Mr. Salih Gadi Johar, the owner of the Awate.com happens to be in Awasa for the whole duration of the congress. This means as a news person and as a stakeholder of the ENCDC congress, he should have used his presence in the conference to shine at that critical moment and feed current news information to his audience. You expect him to pass along first-hand unbiased detailed information about the decisions made in the congress, how they were made and all the intricacies that goes on in a congress of this magnitude.

What about the ENCDC news information as the main actors of the event? Does that mean, the absence of Daniel Tewelde impacted that much that there was no person or group replacing him or that his firing was on purpose to block news coverage? What about EDA’s 11 organizations’ and Gereger websites? The question is- Is this a timely coincidence or an intentional blockage to contain or prevent negative information from being leaked to the general public?  I think there are more questions than answers as to such kind of silence and lack of information about the congress in general and the final leadership selection process and results in particular.

It is prudent to think that if one demands democracy, you expect them to live and practice democratic behaviors and be transparent about any public related endeavors and processes. I think attempting to conceal information from the general public have greater consequences to the overall reputation and credibility of the news media and those hosting the congress such ENCDC and EDA alike. Although I was not giving importance or weight about the selection of Awasa as a place of congress, now I kind of wonder whether the place of congress was selected on purpose to prevent more coverage or prevent information leakage. I called some people who reside in Addis seeking for information whom I thought they know what is going-on, but strangely it appears I have more information than they do. ENCDC commissioners, EDA leaders, Journalists in the congress and Website owners need to understand that the more one attempts to conceal information, people get more curious to know and wind-up demanding more information.

Now my patience is getting thinner due to the whole episode. As an Eritrean struggling for democratic change and as a stakeholder of the ENCDC Congress, I am requesting the Commission, Congress Secretariat and the new leadership to disclose the following information publicly within a reasonable amount of time which should not take more than a week:

  1. List names, of the 544 congress attendees
  2. Each congress participant’s political and/or civic affiliation or representation
  3. Regional (North America, Europe, Asia,  Australia, Middle-East, Sudan and Ethiopia) Representation  statistics
  4. Since the claim was a 60% public and 40% political organizations representation arrangement, what are the actual percentile of the following
  • What are the actual percentages of public vs. political organizations?
  • What mitigating controls were available to prevent fraud from both sides?
  • What are actual percentages public vs. political organizations in the newly elected 127 National Council for Democratic Change?
  1. List of name of the 127 elected National Council for Democratic Change
  2. What was the number and percentage of congress attendees belonging to the 11 EDA political organizations and how was determined?
  3. What is the factual/actual number of National Council leaders belonging to the EDA 11 Political organizations? Note: Please do not tell me 66, I just want the actual number for the record.
  4. Daniel Tewelde vs. the Commissions investigative findings and final resolution.

If we do not stand for one individual’s right, I do not think we stand for rights of the people. There has to be a lot of lessons that we can learn about this. Daniel Tewelde at least deserves a fair hearing and due process before taking his right not participating in the congress. Since we were told that the commission was accountable to the congress/Waela, no one gave them the mandate and authority to disband him from participating. If they had evidence that he works for PFDJ, it is even tactically wrong to wait until one week to the start of the congress. That by itself reflects the sense of deficit of political maturity of the decision makers and individuals who supported their actions.

In conclusion, I appreciate your honest historical answers in advance and looking forward reading and analyzing them as a prudent stakeholder whom I invested heavily and anticipated greater hopes patiently.  I will refrain from making judgments at this juncture until you provide your answers in the public domain which should not take you more than a week to publish it. I think, it is paramount you take this request seriously because it will hinge on your credibility whether or not the general public can take your claim for democratic change seriously. If you chose to ignore the request and failed to provide factual information to the general public, your history will be tainted and will be remembered as hypocrites not better than the totalitarian dictatorial regime in Asmara.

Why are so people who shout about democracy silent on Daniel Tewelde?
If we are silent on Daniel, then how can I trust all your other screams.
How can I trsut Amaha, Abdukadir, nesredin, kelifa … on this issue.
    they lied several times.
Daniele was elected by the people. Only the people can remove him.

    Habte,

The list of 127-member Assembly is posted on Awate.com. Some names are also listed on meskerem.net. The two posts may help you to find a partial answer to your quest for the names of 550+ participants at the conference.

      Habte,

I fully agree with you. Even if it was sheer coincidence that both websites did have technical glitch, it is worth asking. Trasparency is key. It crossed my mind as well. Irrespective of whether the news emerges or not, the old dogmatic ELF(our hisotry) and the babies it procrated( mean political groups) should have no space in governing future Eritrea, nor is the people of Eritrea will welcome. Absolutely , we need fresh thinking, new paradigm – some one who can emerge Eritrea into the global community. I am seek and tired of the politburo style sitting behind a medicore table and giving seminars and discoure with end of DEMDAMI meglezi(report). To that extent I was pleased at the demeanour of the meetings that looked like or traditional gatherings. Let us hope for the best but we can not afford to be gullible to what we are told only , we need to ask , demandand know facts to make our decision.

I followed the congress on daily bases by the coverage of many websites Arabic, Tegrinia and English. Some websites covered the national congress well and some coverage of the websites were very poor. assenna and togoruba coverage were good and timely. Asmarino coverage was very very very poor and Awate seems to be at rest.

The writer of this article, I think, visits only the websites that refrained from covering the national congress.

some websites are hit by virus and one of them is Assenna. Some webistes still didn’t recover from the attack and one of them is Farajat.

You are absolutely right, Sir. If they report, their report is nothing but mere narration of the functions, with no possible readings and interpretations of the deliberations and surprises that could help and teach the public. That is what chroniclers should do; not journalists. To me, you are expecting too much from the wrong people who are a part of the “Ebato Ebato” affair. To them, the ousting of the regime is the only goal on which they have to focus. They never allow you to raise the issue of the installation of a democratic system in place of the dictatorship and the laying of the democratic foundations through real practice from now. That is why most of the websites were silent on all violations of the values and new thoughts of the National Conference of 2010, until everything was a bit by bit eroded and the leadership of the Commission proved to be an exact copy of the regime they claimed to struggle. How many websites exposed these violations on time and pressed for their corrections? I would say to these websites, “Menakum Lelah”.

First, I thank Assena (Amanuel Iyasu) for accommodating such kind of impotent articles that demand transparency accountability and full disclosure. I concur with Habte on the lack of information coverage of the Congress and non-disclosure part of who the congress attendees political/civic affiliation. I personally am aware that many political organizations played double jeopardy by sending their members through their political organizations and as civic or public attendees. Once the information that Habte is demanding becomes public, I am confident that it will show that the composition of the congress attendees was not fairly represented as they claimed in the preparation of it. How many of the 127 elected “Baito” members are representatives of the public? I will be surprised if there are 20 in number. Here is a question to Ginbar Dhnet and ELF, how many members do each of you have? We deserve to know if you believe in full disclosure and if you are hones. That doesn’t mean the other organizations were innocent, but I think these are the most abusers who used the issue Waela and congress to strengthen their individual political base. So, Doctor Yousuf, let’s hear from you as a Ginbar Dihnet (ENSF – 1) second man (Foreign minister) and as head of the executive body the new Baito. Please Amanuel, you have the journalist duty to scrutinize these political organizations and to determine facts whether or not they played games in the name of people.

Before you cast a stone on these web-sites that have stood against all odds and paid all the expenses fully, please stop and think what it takes to get this information. I am mainly referring the cost and the time it takes to organize and broadcast the information. Personally, I am extremely thankful for all the efforts and free access all these web sites have given me. And in due time I believe the owners of these web sites, as hard and expensive as it is, will continue to
Sacrifice their precious time and resources. Thank you Assenna, Awate, Asmarino and others. Keep up the good work.

I think, it is not wise to expect from the beginning 100% a democratic practices. It takes time to reach that stage. The democratic process in the opposition camp has begun and it is the role of all to work for its perfection. From the beginning we don’t expect perfection.

i must say i am confused by habte’s article. does he say that the websites have not done their job because he feels they could have done more or because they have actually done nothing? beause his questions were unanswerred or because he could not find lists of names even when they were posted? i think i can see what demo.archive.assenna.com did or did not do for myself. it was from this website that I got the info i have on the congress. i find some of us have unreasonable expectations from journalists. and i would like Sabbahar to remember a journalist’s main mission is to deliver the facts as they present themselves. the public can make up its own mind. interpreting? leave that to the analyst.

I coudn’t a gree more. Why the a bsence of news coverage on the Awassa Conference. The timely update given by Assenna at the beginning of the conference was encouraging.I don’t know what to say to interested Eritreans who ask what is next ? I do hope the opposition web-sites will come with an answer sooner than later. For the moment for change starts today not tomorrow.
