If this film came to an end and watched by the world, it will change the land scape of East Africa for good. When Polpot was in power and destroying Cambodia, there was a film called “Cambodia under Polpot” which disgusted the whole world and created a big awareness throughout the world. Within less than a year, almost all the countries around Cambodia rise against Polpot and united to make the east Asia the safest and prosperous area of the world. Now East Asia is booming more than any part of the world. You see how films change the world. I hope this film is finished and reach on the hands of many.

Hi Chris,
Yes indeed, any exposure Eritreans can get as to their current predicament is a step forward towards a better future. Most of the world doesn’t know how isolated and excruciatingly poor Eritrea is and that is absolutely because of terribly misguided domestic and foreign policies of the regime. There is virtually no Eritrean family that hasn’t been impacted by this senseless and endless national service. Most Eritreans are now finally coming to grips as to how quickly their hard earned nation is dying away. Siad Barre of Somalia was doing very similar things when he was toppled and Isaias Afwerki is leading the nation in a similar destructive and divisive fashion. Today, Eritreans are as divided as they have ever been although they realize their nation’s survival is hugely at stake but they are helpless.
You will probably find that when you interview a lot of the youth who are leaving in droves, they don’t quite know who their real enemy is because they have been misguided since young age. One would ask, ‘why don’t they fight inside Eritrea and bring about change as in the Arab Spring?’ They out number the veteran fighters and they are equally armed if not more and they are a lot younger than the guerrilla fighters who are mostly in their 50’s and 60’s. I hope you find a good answer to that if you ask the question at all. Why not fight in Eritrea and bring about change? I have some theories about that. There are so many things at play. One is that most Eritreans do not want to die for their country anymore because they are hell-bent on getting what they want and they will get it elsewhere and they want to see that freedom anywhere before they die. They would rather die searching their financial and political freedom elsewhere than Eritrea. This is deep rooted and there are no easy answers as you will find out. I wish you the best of luck.

Biniam, I asked hundreds of them different questions but not the question “why dont you fight in eritrea.. ”
First I dont think it is the right question on my mind and second I dont have the right to do so.
From their answers this is what I gathered. These youths do not consider the president is the reason they left eritrea. They know eritrea is a hard place to enjoy life due to the hardship in the military service and the endless daily laboer hard work waiting for them.
They see fleeing eritrea not the same way like adults. They see it as a patter5. You finish high school and take the chance to run away from sawa or immediately after6 sawa graduation.
They worry for those who are on the way but never for those who are in the service. Some thinks they are the smartest ones compared to them in service. The last sawa graduation in summer more than 21 eri youth were following on YouTube and dancing singing together.
On short thy concider fleeing eritrea is as part of eris youth rituals. Pluss they think they are helping their country. This is what I was telling the so called oppostion meet the youths before pfdj continues its influence in the west too. The vulture pfdj is smarter in contacting new commers specially the young ones amd let the feel welcome.

Tamrat, if you are an American, that would be what your would ask “why not fight in your country and take it over?” We have more than 100K in Ethiopia only and equal numbers in Sudan and tens of thousands else where – all who left in the last decade. So it is not a few disgruntled people. As you well know, nearly every Eritrean wants to leave Eritrea if given the opportunity. Why do we have nearly 100% of the people who do not think the country is going in the right direction yet all they do is just take off? How come even simply 1% of this refuse to leave their country and make the necessary sacrifices and get rid of the brutal regime? These are semi-rhetorical questions but I do wonder why. I guess what I am ultimately asking is that – do Eritreans believe that they can prosper and live happily in their country post-PFDJ with a democratic government? (not just simply visit and flash around after saving a few thousand dollars in the West).

Both of you did not read what I wrote or did not understand.
Biniam repeated what I said. I have talked and discussed with more than hundreds youths. The youths take fleeing eritrea as a routine. I summarized my conclusion based on the conversation I have made. Dancing with a sawa graduation they nearly missed is an example I gave. Not I based my conclusion from.
The youths support isayas. They do see fleeing as an opportunity to a better schooling., escape free labor.
While you are surfing the Web pfdg works hard to flee eritrea olso is not bad as long as they contribute to the struggle of the pfdj from outside too.
As you well said I’m not American. But I know both pfdj and the youth very well. All the pfdj I know came to norway after 2000.

there might be something that you can not see but which is omnipresent:
Eritrean have a deep distrust agaist Ethiopians, who want Eritrea to be a part of Ethiopia – nomatter how nice the Ethiopian person might be.
The last two Eritrean generations remember Ethiopians as those who
-tortured and killed their family members,
-who sold Eritrean people (pregnant women) to russians as some kind of “guinea pig” they could surgically experiment with
-as former trusted neighbours in the city/village who turned out as spies of Haileselassie / Derg or who poisend people systematically
– who systematically tried to kill the intellectual and any other kind of “elite” of Eritrea
A lot of Eritreans will need several generations till they can overcome these (on historical facts based) distrust…
To tell you frankly, if you, my Brother, come along and try to talk about Eritrean politics with Eritrean youngsters, they won’t completely pour out their hearts.
Because they don’t want to “connive” with sombody who would like to “liquidate” their nation, their identity. They could even think you are a spie of HGDF as every Eritrean knows the dicators ancestors are Ethiopians and he might be either.
If you were in their situation i think you coudn’t hold it against them.
The majority of Eritreans (of any age) doesn’t support the Eritrean regime.

Sister Selam, we dont discuss politics or eris school contents. If they are brain washed the way you have said, then I am a super hero because every summer many of them visit us the hug and the greetings I get is telling me the pfdg drilling is not a much for me By the way we dont talk about unity. But I tell them to focus on their language, choose a profession norway needs, and learn how norwegian respect the right of an individual or groups. Last the greeting the pfdj man gets is more of politeness and respect but with me just like their age group.

Please make the international community through your film that repression and human rights abuse has been going on in Eritrea unabated for almost 30 years . And the UN should act immediately before Eritrea sinks into the dark ages, they just need to remove the mafia regime and leader by force urgently.
