I am a journalist for The Associated Press based in Italy and I am working on a story about the difficulties in identifying migrants who perish at sea trying to reach Italy.
There is a commission for missing people within Italy’s Interior Ministry along with a non-governmental group called the Comitato 3 Ottobre (The Oct. 3 Committee) which are trying to identify primarily those who were recovered from the tragedies on Oct. 3, 2011 and Oct. 11, 2013.
They are reaching out to the diaspora in Europe and North America to try to find relatives to help confirm the identities of those who were recovered and who have not yet been positively identified. For my story, I would be interested in speaking with anyone who has been trying to find out if a family member had died in one of these tragedies. And I would also be happy to put folks in touch with authorities here to try to get formal information.
This is contact information for the Italian office of missing persons.
ufficiocommissario.personescomparse@interno.it
uffcomm.personescomparse@pec.interno.it
And you can find the Comitato 3 Ottobre on Facebook and also on their own web page. This link takes you to the page where they describe (in Italian unfortunately.) the process for identifying victims of the oct. 3 and Oct. 11tragedies.

I look forward to hearing from you. And I hope this information may be of use to someone.
Best regards,
Colleen Barry
