A Call for Urgent Action from the UNHCR, the UN, and the EU Parliament for the Eritrean Refugees Being Held in Sudanese Prisons.

Dongula (Sudan), October 3rd, 2011. The situation of the 361 Eritrean prisoners being held in Dongula prison, near Scimalia (Sudan), has still not improved, despite the SOS we launched to the United Nations and European Union. We provided the authorities with several phone numbers of detainees, and asked them, through diplomatic channels, to urge the Sudanese government to secure their release. Inexplicably – ten days after receiving these phone numbers – neither the UNHCR nor the officials of the various UN departments, or any MEPs have attempted to contact the refugees. We are talking about desperate people, with many women, children and sick people among them. We are therefore continuing to protest and seek solidarity and humanity from the organizations whose job it is to protect refugees worldwide. In the meantime, we wish to inform them that five people were taken away by Eritrean soldiers today. We do not know their fate, and this new drama has thrown the remaining 356 refugees into despair. The names of four of the Eritreans taken from their cells are: Misghina Beine, Mahmoud Ibrahim, Angoson Halek, and George Eitirabiay. Here is another prisoner’s phone number the UNHCR can contact: 00249908555169
