A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Eritrea@25: Learning from the Past, Overcoming the Present and Envisioning a Bright Future
A wisdom is like a baobab tree, no one individual can embrace it.
The Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (EMDHR) cordially invites Eritreans and non-Eritreans to take part in the national dialogue on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Eritrean Independence.
Rational
Eritrea, as an independent country, is 25 years old. As Eritreans celebrate this milestone, they evidently engage in evaluation whether or not Eritrea has met the aspirations and dreams of its people for a better life worth the sacrifices of its people who paid the ultimate price through their loved ones and everything they had. EMDHR would like to utilize the Silver Jubilee of the Eritrean Independence as an opportunity to reflect and review the progress or lack thereof in the last 25 years. It is an occasion for us as a nation to pause, reflect, and draw lessons from the past for a better present and brighter future.
Eritrean and non-Eritrean intellectuals of diverse disciplines and experiences are cordially invited to participate in this initiative at which they have the opportunity to share their views, assessments and recommendations on different aspects – namely political, economic, social, cultural as well as environmental – with the wider public. By so doing they would be able to shape constructive public discourse on the basis of objective analysis and present feasible and practical steps towards solutions to the numerous challenges facing our country and its people.
The Initiative is premised on the following general assertions:
- Eritrea and its people are faced with great and grave challenges that are critical to their survival and development.
- There are better options and alternatives that can enable our country to meet the aspirations of its people.
- In order to arrive at shared and common alternatives we need to seriously, sincerely and with open-mind dialogue among ourselves.
- The role of Eritrean intelligentsia is essential in this respect and there is a huge reservoir of intellectual capital among Eritreans that is yet to be fully harnessed for constructive purposes of shaping public opinion and guiding collective action.
This initiative thus intends to mobilize and bring together this critical potential to engage and provide an objective perspective on the Eritrean experiences of the last 25 years. We hope that this will encourage not just the Eritrean intellectuals but also the people at large to be active participants in their national discourse and build a nation that caters the needs and meets the aspirations of its citizens.
Using diverse media, namely Paltalk panel discussions, seminars and media interviews Eritreans scholars and practitioners will have the opportunity to interact with Eritrean public in a highly sober, objective and constructive dialogues on the following and related themes. The public seminars, lectures, and panel discussions will be provided in either Arabic, Tigrigna, or English. It is a very good initiative. In my opinion ,that is what we have missed for so long.Even though it seems to be late,it is positive. We ended where we are, only because,we were /are totally naive.
My suggestion:the debates and discussions should not concentrate only on the last 25 years but 100 years back….All the problems we have today are the results of our ignorance.

Teclay,
Excellent observation.
Remember the old tigrigna adage that goes, “meriyet entetigmeTel’si kuEnti mtsegebna belet hibay”.
Little did the monkey know, under that scenario, she/the hibay will also no longer be alive to feed on the ku’enti. Poor hibay.
Similarly and unfortunately here, poor Eritrean people can’t yet think differently and figure out same old ignorance and arrogance.

Haile
Thank you for your comment.
You see ,a lot of ppl deliberately or unknowingly repeat Isaias’s obstacle to the rule of low and democracy, ignoring our enemy Mr.Ignorance .
Let us imagine (as long as imaginations is free):What would happen if the 3 mill Eritreans all moved to Norway and the 5 mill Norwegians moved to Eritrea.
conditions:day of exchange-the 1st of may(no excuse for winter temperature).
terms of exchange – All to all i.e,. all the democracy and well-being of the Norwegians would be given to Eritreans for free…and the poor Norwogians would face all the Ghedli’s mess to sort out.
The test result:
The Eritreans would start in 3 months before the beginning of the winter to ask an asylum in Sweden and Denmark;whereas, the Norwegians not only would make Eritrea a paradise but also would influence Ethiopia and East-Africa positively,in max 5 years.
The factor???????????????

Dears Teclay and all:
That is very perceptive of you- ‘Mr. Ignorance” is the enemy of us all…in our case it has arguably become institutionalised, perhaps for a reason. The result, Eritrean scholarship has suffered tremendously and the loser is society- Eritrean society. As you suggest we should use our intellect to produce and distribute knowledge. This will help us stay objective and rationale, generate reasoned out solutions. We hope all of you will participate in the initiative by writing a paper (including Haile’s model approach) and present it as proposed. Send us your interests and abstracts.
Thanks

Seble,
Let what go extactly? You think people lack bravery? You don’t think people are fully aware of the issues and problems that have yet to be solved? Who is YOU?! Please using the intelligence you possess (arguable-judging from your comment) do you think that YOU is the solution?!
Me, as an Eritrean I am fully aware of the problems mentioned above, and I dare to take the liberty of most Eritreans or even non- Eritreans at least agreeing partially of what is listed above. So, I’m more than happy to participate, but never at the expense of our nation’s bloody history or reducing my nation to something worse than it was before the 25 years and not pretending of this mental war that is now going on between everybody! Are YOU brave enough to be real and talk truth?! I doubt it! I’m happy for the moderator to pass on my contact details to the organizers! Flooooooooating!!
