SANAA (Reuters) – Eritrea’s navy has seized five Yemeni fishing boats in the Red Sea in an area where the two countries have had a territorial dispute, a Yemeni official said on Tuesday.

The incident is part of a dispute between Yemen and Eritrea over water rights around the Red Sea’s Hanish Islands, which the two countries briefly fought over in 1995.

An international court gave Yemen sovereignty over some of the archipelago’s islands, but the two countries have disagreed on interpretations of the ruling regarding fishing rights.

Eritrea has repeatedly captured Yemeni fishing boats that it says were fishing in its territorial waters, Fisheries Ministry Undersecretary Nabil Sajam told Reuters.

“Eritrean forces captured these boats. They do this regularly and accuse the Yemeni fishermen of entering Eritrean waters,” Sajam said.

Eritrean officials could not be immediately contacted to comment.

Yemen says both countries’ territorial waters are open to Eritrean and Yemeni fisherman, while Eritrea says that Yemenis are not allowed to fish in its waters.

Yemeni fishing boats caught by Eritrean forces are usually confiscated, while the fishermen on board are given jail sentences lasting for a few months before being returned to their home country, Sajam said.

If we had democratic system with active labor movements, we could encourage people particularly on sea cost line to develop the fishing market. This way we can benefit from
the resources as the same time our fishermen could act as a look-out of the territory.

I have been one of those staff of Asmara University from 1983 to 1991. I have done a lot of work in the Red Sea coastal area with my colleagues both natives and expatriates. I have also gone to the Dahlak Islands although under the strict control and follow up of the Russians who were controlling the area. Then both the Dahlaki, the Massawa fishermen under the Lutheran Federation and the YEMENIS were using the sea in collaboration with each other. No one was working against another. There was no enmity. Tesfalidet, you are just one of those thugs who want to put a wedge between Yemenis and our own people. There are a lot of publications done by me and a few by some of my colleagues on this area. So, this action of the totalitarian dictator is none but piracy of its purest form. I have nos space to continue. But, I would remind everyone to take care of such issues. If you have no solid information on the history of the area for more than a century please refrain from making silly suggestions & and writing dirty comments which will not benefit the peoples of the area.
