235 Killed: Mosque Attack is the Deadliest in Egypt’s History

A terrorist attack on a mosque in Egypt’s troubled North Sinai region is the deadliest terrorist attack in Egypt’s modern history. According to Egyptian state television, at least 235 people were killed and more than 109 injured

A terrorist attack on a mosque in Egypt’s troubled North Sinai region is the deadliest terrorist attack in Egypt’s modern history.

According to Egyptian state television, at least 235 people were killed and more than 109 injured after unidentified terrorists stormed Al-Rawda mosque with explosives and heavy weaponry. Initial reports indicate the attack involved at least one suicide bombing and heavy gunfire.

If the death toll is confirmed, the attack would become the deadliest terrorist attack in Egypt’s history since a 2005 attack on Sharm el-Sheikh. While the 2015 downing of Metrojet Flight 9268 killed all 224 passengers on board, claims of responsibility by ISIS remain unconfirmed and the incident continues to be investigated by relevant authorities despite belief that it was most likely downed by a bomb.

THE 1990S AND 2000S

Since the 1990s, there have been a number of terrorist attacks targeting both security personnel and civilians. The most infamous attack in the 1990s was the Luxor Massacre of 1997, which saw the killing of 62 people by members of Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya.

In the 2000s, a string of terrorist attacks struck Egypt’s Red Sea resort towns. The first major attack on the Red Sea occurred in October 2004 when a truck bomb targeted the Hilton Taba in Taba, killing 34 people and injuring 171.

Less than a year later on 23 July 2005, a number of bombings targeted Egypt’s popular resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The attack, which took place on the anniversary of the 23rd July Revolution, killed 88 people and injured more than 150 others. At the time, the attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in Egypt’s history.

In April 2006, again targeting an Egyptian Red Sea resort city, 23 people were killed and 80 others injured after a series of explosions struck Dahab.

In recent years, major terrorist attacks have targeted security forces and members of the Coptic Christian community in Egypt.

RECENT ATTACKS

There have been a number of attacks targeting Coptic Christians, three of which occurred in 2017. On Palm Sunday in April 2017, suicide bombings targeting St. George’s Church in Tanta and St. Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria killed at least 45 people. A month later, 28 Coptic Christians were killed when masked terrorists opened fire on a bus.

Attacks against security forces have occurred across Egypt. The majority of such attacks take place in Egypt’s North Sinai. According to a review by Egyptian Streets, an estimated 2100 people were killed in North Sinai in 2015, including roughly 1800 described by the military as “terrorists,” 150 civilians, 40 police officers and conscripts, and 140 military personnel.

The most recent attack targeting security forces occurred on October 10. At least 16 members of Egypt’s security forces were killed in Al-Wahat in Egypt’s Western Desert when security forces raided a terrorist hideout.

The most damaging recent attack on Egypt’s tourism industry, however, was the downing of Metrojet Flight 9268. The airplane crashed in Egypt’s Sinai, killing all 224 passengers on board. ISIS claimed responsibility for the crash. However, while an explosion is thought to be the most likely cause of the incident, no perpetrators were ever caught and the incident remains under investigation.

Egypt has called for an international response to terrorism in recent years, with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi using Egypt’s position in the region to rally the international community. Along with calling for a unified response, President Sisi has called for the reform of religious discourse to tackle religious extremism and terrorism.

    • amanuel November 25, 2017

This would not have happened if government of egypt had condemned and fought crimes in the name of religion against christian egyptians. Instead they have been condoning the radicalization and open preachings of violence against christians. Well kalot kinekis teebyo kelbi temelisu neaka eyu zinekis.

Your cluelessness and ignorance about politics/religion is clearly showing.
It is not that you have no word to say but you have no normal functioning brain to analysis and to differentiate matters on hand. Have you ever heard “Agazian extremists” attacking a mosque or a church in your sad miserable life, ever? Your supposedly cheap and weak shot on peaceful God fearing Christians {or to make you happy Agazians} only exposes your desperation and your pathetic attention/fame seeking games.
Why are you so scared and so obsessed about Agazians, are you having sleepless nights????
Ironic isn’t it how poor Eritrea today has the most backward of everything: politics, economy, evil moslims and everything in between? Stop hallucinating and get real soon.
All the terrorism and violence in the world is conducted by your evil Islamic followers and the violence and aggression is based and supported by the verses of your evil Qur’an. as we speak your terrorist moslim brothers are raping, beheading, bombing, abducting and wrecking the peaceful world and innocent humans lives. You shouldn’t remain blind and ignorant to the glaring sad reality and facts.

    • Dawit November 24, 2017

Sorry my above comment is meant/posted to the hopeless blind/ignorant Danilo.

      • Danilo November 24, 2017

Well dawit, are you responding to a clue less you supposed to me? Beh, you expose your self defending agaazian extremism. my point on the above mean is clear if your stupid adventure /adventura di merda is already in mission from adi halo and mekele to dismantle Christian value exactly what the Isis is doing against Islam value.

        • Alula November 25, 2017

          Danilo,
Are you a mad dog or a mad comedian and why are you diverting the awful tragedy (death of ordinary people) to irrelevant agaazian extremism?
Are you seriously claiming or defending the extremist moslem criminals and killers? Our Christians whether you call them agaazians or Axumians never attack churches or mosques and kill their ordinary prayers.
You must be one of the terrorists advertiser or lawyer, which one
are you, tell us the truth? And why are you using an European name, aren’t you a moslem man? You should be ashamed and hide away.

          • Danilo November 25, 2017

Alula/ dawit, Sami, shilan, etc. Aren’t you have a big drum of hate rather building the sacred brother hood i è Muslim & Christians. again, my point is clear and am opposing all forms of extremism.

In addition, don’t bother about my name exactly as yours .

    Horrendous news!
My heartfelt thoughts, my prayers and my sincere condolences to all Egyptians. May God give the victims eternal life, and may God comfort the traumatised and those who lost their loved ones.
And finally may God change the hearts and minds of the perpetrators. It is very hard to understand what kind of mindset the perpetrators operate from. They target innocent people in places of worship –
mosques and churches. If they say Allah is omnipotent – all powerful – why don’t they leave it to him to kill whoever he decides to!

There is no question that the world is in turmoil. It seems high time that the nihilist ideology is challenged with love, civility and commonsense. Human dignity is paramount but these individuals see it as some kind of trash.
Those in power need to challenge the philosophy of darkness at every level.

God bless all Egyptians with peace and greater wisdom. Amen.

The problem is not the person but the book they believe in.

  • Tesfai November 24, 2017

How many times have you heard the noble and master people who are demanding to rule and be ruled by the Islamic Sharia Law of the 7th century Arabic tradition:

“Islam is the Religion of Peace”

See all the peace loving Islamic nations that have no wars and death in them, I mean, like Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, North America, South America, China, India, Ethiopia, Far East Asia, Australia, Arctic and the Penguins Antarctica all live in peace because they practice Islam.

Now repeat Five Times a Day: “Islam is the religion of Peace”

Even though, I have lots of respect to Assenna, why did Assenna ignore the main African news this week – the Slave Market auction in Libya run by Muslim Arabs who were selling black Africans that includes Christian Eritreans?
When the victims are Arab Muslims Assenna reports fast to help the Arabs but ignores the black African victims sold to Arab slavery in Arab nations. Why?

Here is the news ignored by Assenna:
After a video surfaced showing migrants apparently being sold at auction in Libya, people worldwide have been calling for action.

Last week, CNN published a report on modern slavery in Libya, featuring a video that reportedly was shot in August and appeared to show a man selling African migrants for farm work.

“Big strong boys,” the man said in the video, according to a CNN narrator. “400 … 700 … 800,” he called out the mounting prices. The men were eventually sold for about $400 each, CNN reported. The Libyan government said it has launched an investigation into slave auctions in the country.

Following the CNN report, demonstrators took to the streets in Paris and other cities last week to express their outrage, and Libyans showed their solidarity on Twitter with the
    hashtag # LibyansAgainstSlavery.

      Bravo,Tesfai,
I love and admire your satire and your great sense of humor tremendously.
I don’t know if you would agree with me but I strongly believe our confused Danilo friend is
one of the “big strong boy” black/white Arab slave that was sold for $400 but must have escaped from his farm work and now unashamedly is defending the terrorist moslem Arabs.
Assenna is not a free and independent website serving and telling all the truths to the public.

Well most oromos, wello, harare are moslems. 30% ethiopians are moslem.

  • Mihret November 25, 2017

I am only glad and extremely relieved that this time round the dead or killed ones are not from the Orthodox Church poor Christians like the last time in Egypt. At least this time the brutal and cruel Muslims seem to kill each other may be and also sadly in their Allah akuber devil killing and destroying way.
When are these backward Muslims come out of their stone age era and animal mentality? Life is so precious.

  • amanuel November 25, 2017

This is not a kind of news that one can be happy about no matter how much disgusted with the behaviour of the arabs. There certainly are some innocents who hate the crimes that moslems commit against inocents regardless of their origin or relgion which is sad. The religion has inherent problems and promotes beheadings, mutilation, killing and destruction and the arab governments nurtured these heneous crimes in the name of jihad and religion for so long. They never thought it would back fire on them. Now they find themselves in situation that they can not get out. It is devouring them. It is good to be vigillant and stop their migration to your country if u are a non moslem country but still not good to be happy about death of someone.

To say the least there is no democracy in Eritrea. There is Italian planted Fascism and its tentacles are active. It has become a culture. those of us who are blaming PFDJ for all the ills in Eritrea are trying to use PFDJ as escape goat but as at now neither individuals nor oppositions has no Democratic culture. All killings, torture, insults, extremism , hate, threats which are some of the tentacles are abundant in Eritrea and in its culture. So no need to pretend as if some of us are humans and democrats. PFDJ is our face. extremism has no reason or demand. It just wants to kill every creature of the planet. that is what is happening in the Arab world. As I follow ERI-TV Eritrea Looks an Islamic nation with only Arabic and English on the screen Dr. Yosuf of Sudan claim looks real. when I attend ERI-TV it looks unidentified creature from unknown planet.

Egypt, historically synonymous with the origin of civilization, what we witness today is pure regression. It is sad news for humanity.Folks lets stop for a minute, who manufactures these murderous weapons which proliferate throughout the global society and is wiping out innocent children in a schoolyard,a peaceful church congregation,a cheering bunch of concertgoers, law abiding protesters asking for justice, good citizens playing a sporting event for a good charity cause………..and on and on.Somebody likes to keep this world in turmoil, huh! I wonder why.
