You know, the sweetest thing is not when you get a praise all the time from people who agree with your political ideology, but it is when you get a praise from people who disagree with so many of your views. I can mention several points that I disagree with Amanuel’s political views, but there is no doubt that he is a great man who has galvanized Eritreans to stand up against the ruthless PFDJ regime by providing space for article posting and using assenna’s very effective radio programs.
In my opinion, currently there are only two Eritrean websites that have become the pioneers of very balanced source of information: one is assenna and the second is meskerem. Although assenna has sometimes violated its journalistic responsibilities by showing its biases and not informing Eritreans about the ugliness of the opposition groups, assenna deserves our utmost gratitude for allowing us to express our views without serious censorship.
Assenna is fairly new compared to other Eritrean websites, and its success is definitely creating uneasiness in some quarters that have thought they had the market monopoly but find themselves becoming really stagnant. Assenna is truly leading the information edge although it has also become a damping place for articles that are not worth posting. During the Addis and Awasa wa’elas, it was Assenna that covered it more than the Kidan or other opposition websites combined. On top of this, Assenna has to worry about its radio broadcasts directly to Eritrea too. Add to this all the multiple demands and insults from the Hgdef supporters.
