TRUST is very important!! I am all against PIA. But what i am learning especially after “PIA meeting with eritreans in NY” is that the regime has still strong die hard supporters. The so called eritrean oppostion group assumed for long PIA is lossing his support among in diaspora. But i dont think so. Eritreans may not like PIA but they do NOT trust the opposition group. Infact many are very upset that you guys held meetings in ETHIOPIA and seek blessing of woyane instead of building trust from eritreans. Latest Awate.com POLL shows eritreans are deeply divided on this issue simply due to the meeting held in ETHIOPIA.
So Folks, dont assume that Eritreans are infavor of the opposition simply since they hate PIA. So far we have no alternative. We can not support the opposition as much as we hate PIA. this explain the greater silence of the eritreans in diaspora.

If it were as you say it is, that it is a carefully considered stand, it wouldn’t be so bad. What I personally think is that they are in the US and Canada enjoying what the countries offer, they go to their homeland and see their loved ones as often as they like by simply paying 2% and what is happening to the unfortunate others who are dying to make it as they did does not touch them, they turn a blind eye. If they are asked for rare occasions to gather and shout and scream to show their consent, no problem!

No one asked the crowd to adhere to any opposition group. What is missing here is the indignation to say what you clearly and courageously state “I am all against PIA.”. Not to TRUST opposition groups who are who they are for the last 20 years, but to MISTRUST what is glaringly an oppressive system.

Those who benefits from the system, they will defend the system. They preferred to ” support” PIA so they could build ” merebae” in Eritrea . We all know they say alot of negative things against PIA behind the curtain. They took calculated political stand to support PIA .
The vast majority of the diaspora chose to be silent: not against or pro PIA. This shows the weakness of the so called opposition group .

            Meazza:

You don’t need to pay two percent to visit Eritrea. If you have not committed any crimes against Eritrea then you can visit Eritrea. You just don’t get any services. To get services you have to comply with the laws of the land. Facts are facts.
Go visit Eritrea next May 24, 2012 .

    Dear Amanuel Eyasu,

Your indignation is infectious. It has been there inflexible for as long as we have come to know you through Assena. It most certianly is a bitter pillow to swallow for DIA & co. You are a source of inspiration and hope to some of us. In my view, you incarnate the Eritrean spirit of real hard work and transmit an unassuming and dignified bearing. Sometimes, the pain you feel for the trauma of our youth and people is palpable and it comes strong, between the lines, during your interviews of some refugees. It is a godsend that you are where you are, in constant contact with our trodden and in a key position to address the Eritrean people on a regular basis. Young people are drawn to you. I rarely miss an Assena raido programme.

I had always wished to express my appreciation and respect for your (and your team’s) untiring dilligence so please bear with me.

Having said that, the crumbling of Isayas’s reign, inspite of the massive effort by Hgdef to stage a carefully choreographed show at the Center, seems to be at hand. I think the countdown is in process. The time when he basked in the adoration of naive people is long gone. His running right and left to reverse grave mistakes were not achieved. It seems to me that the number of people who showed up at Center was an element of great surprise to him and his hgdef organizers. I think it went beyond their wildest dreams. You can verify this by going to Dehai and reading what hgdef supporters post. They must have been terrorized that very few people would show up, so much so, Asmara lights were out. I really believe that from now on everything will be accelerated and the change that we are craving for will take place sooner than later.

Someone’s post stated: “He (Isayas) knows the few with resolve move a mountain like our fellow brethern did from the mountains of Sahel and the deserts of Barkaa which includes him. Those few were outside echoeing the truth. What he probably did not know though some of those kids outside were born and are the top breed of our struggle Betimherti Sewra(Zero School). That would send shivers in his spine.”

I very strongly believe in the above. I think the few outside echoeing the truth sent shivers in Isayas’s spine and are going to give him sleepless nights. The choreographed show at the Center, Isayas would know had no authenticity – it was choreographed! He would play along and use and abuse the choreographed product, but deep in his heart he knew it was the few outside who were echoeing the truth who will eventually move the mountains. He was made aware, that the real countdown has started.

It does not appear he is returning home a happy man.

For those who want change, the activities (DIA’s) of the recents weeks have revealed a very important breakthrough. A momentum that lasted 20 years after indepedence may be shattered.

      • Maazza October 2, 2011

        Kbur Amanuel Eyasu,

Thank you for honoring me with such a substantial reply. I most sincerely thought that you must these days be so stretched with time, at best you would glimpse through our posts.

I read and re-read your post with added concentration and reflection as I mentally and emotionally journeyed to some of the very sad realities of our condition as a people that your impeccable pen hgihlights. To start with, your first paragraph reveals an unassuming clean person who is so focussed on what remains to be done, the great achievemnents he is registering, which is clearly seen and felt by many of us, does not affect and bloat him. Your stating “To a large extent, I am doing this for myself – to get relief and peace of mind…” brings home the best in our culture: modesty and complete absence of arrogance which was a vital chemistry for achieving victory during the struggle. I always imagined you to be that type, so you see my intuition was not wrong! You incarnate what is best in the undying beloved EPLF spirit.

Some readers may be saying, she is overflowing with praise but I say WHY NOT? Why should we not give credit where it is due naturally and effortlessly. Why are we quick to belittle, denigrate and mistrust but very reserved or outright silent when it comes to praising outstanding people like you, Amanuel Eyasu? To me, you manifest the best in us!! Like the young do when you speak to them through your Assena radio, full of reverence for you and Assena – Amanuel hawey yecKenylna they say with emotion, we also should do the same loud and clear. Hgdef works day and night so that every drop of praise goes to DIA and no one else! It goes without saying that we are a people with a lot of promise and potential (I read recently that there is a young Eritrean girl who is set to climb the Himalays!!), but DIA and Hgdef are bent to ensure that there is only one extraordinary person (or a god, I should say) in Eritrea and the rest are like sheep! Caliguila said about the Roman people, ‘I wish the people of Rome were but one neck so that I could chop it off with a singly stroke” or something to that effect in his hour of madness as an Emperor. Had Libi Hade Hzbi makes me think of that and I get a bit paronoid! Luckily, unfortunately for Monkey this indoctrination is proving to be a BIG FLOP!!

I could go on and on praising your relentless hard work and palpable anguish over our people’s plight not because someone is breathing down my neck to do so, not because I will have gains in doing so, but because your endeavour is genuinely praiseworthy. I ULULATE because you give us a fourm where we are calling a spade a spade and you are leading in the front, visible to friends and foe! I am simply full of praise! Period.

‘WE ARE FIGHTING TODAY SO THAT OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER CARRY THESE GUNS AGAIN’. Before I finsihed the phrase I got so emotionally charged the tears had welled ‘bliding’ me as I read. What happend to this nobel soul of the Eritrean people? Isayas stole our dreams! What is admirable in your journey is that as a child you were sharp enough to gauge its meaning and pledged to sacrifice your extreemely youthful life to the cause. As a young adult, you witnessed the betrayal and decided to fight it. Some time ago, I heard you in Assena lamenting that you regretted having gone out of the country, that your should have bashed his face with your microphone, etc.etc. That’s when I was very much impacted by your ardor and, yes, your earnestness. But you see Amanuel, we can’t claim to know the workings of the cosmic law. I tend to believe that the role you are playing outside of Eritrea is extreemely VITAL. Your experience groomed you to be where you are so that you would echo TRUTH to truth-starved corners of our society in an authentic and forcefull manner. You had to be out. No happening is an accident in the universe.

This post is in praise of you personally and your team. Some may find fault in it but I couldn’t care less.

          Maazza haftey,

If there is an aha moment as the diva Oprah would say it, this sure is a Wow moment on your part. What can I say haftey natey. You’re just one of a kind. All the power to you. I don’t even have to go on a wild brain storming to figure out whom you might be or you could be, simply because, I like to think of you as a figment of an imagination, a pure soul floating up in cloud nine as you watch over Eritrea. Bless your heart haftey.

      • Temesgen Medhanie October 2, 2011

        Z’kheberka Amanuel Eyasu,

I hope you’re not going to call me weTam as I seem to stick my nose in the warm exchange of ideas between you and Maaza. But I should confess that, I couldn’t resist the temptation to express my impression about you. As much as I think of you as a late comer into the multiple Eritrean websites when Asmarino.com and Awate.com filled the lime light, your stellar performance, hard work and gutsy stand seem to steal the lime light. I should say that, Tesfal’det Alem-Maharena doesn’t opine much as he relentlessly exposes the hypocrisy of Isaias as the former brings it to the fore with video clips and documentaries. Sure enough, when I first came across to your contributions into the going noble cause when you graced us with your “Kemey Qenikhi Hagerey” column on Asmarino, I knew right from the get go that, you have something extraordinary in you. You’re a natural-born leader with clarity of ideas, forceful voice and of course unflinching stand on critical issues when the scirbes on Awate.com who boast more than two thousand articles to their credit vacillate between labelling Isaias a benevolent dictator to bashing the Opposition parties as they see it fit.

The road less travelled that you have taken up is incredibly difficult where you feel at times losing hopes and aspirations as you would see some compatriots slacking off in their fight against the home grown tyranny in Eritrea, but one thing that remains to be a fact is, history, truth and the silent majority of the Eritrean people are on your side. If I have to paraphrase Isaac Newton: if posterity in Eritrea is to see further than others in a free and democratic Eritrea, it is because, posterity will have to stand on the giant shoulders of yours. We will not relent. We will fight, fight and fight ’till we bring justice, freedom and prosperity to the one and only Eritrea!!!

    • Hidri Teseriku October 1, 2011

Dear brother Taddesse, I think Eritrea could use a few of you level headed yet humble people. Unfourtunatley weather power is given to Sebhat Efrem or somebody else, it would be too late. The Country is devided. Look at Yemen, how divided it is. While you may have the majority of Eritreans sick and tired, look at the people who turned out to see him? Tough we all agree that pfdj has a dwindling membership when you see the cultists who turn out in the thousands are quite disturbing. I am sorry to see once proud and hard working people reduced to this by a bunch of gangsters.

    • kozami October 1, 2011

You make some good points as far as internal dialog goes, however you need to guard against external influences such as the issues of what are the viable alternatives when an enemy is literally buying People.

      • Maazza October 1, 2011

        Kozami,

Can you, DIA, hgdefites and the likes live without enemies?? From time immemorial, all those who wanted to use the sword had real or immagined enemies so they could use the sword against who do not want them guised in legitimacy. You are disgustingly manupulative to insinuate that the division in Eritrea could amount to what is going on in Yemen.

Those who are benfitting from DIA’s rule inside the country are but a handful in Eritrea, an insignificant number of people – a drop in the ocean. Most are bearly resisting the heavy hand, are in the same boat, silently fermenting and heating up until the hour of truth dawns. The reality in Yemen is quite different because the booty of the country’s wealth was made to filter to a wider circle (as in Syria). Besides, there are tribal considerations. Our DIA is myopic as regards sharing the booty with a wider circle thus creating a hefty secction that would have defended his rule to death. Even Egypt at some point revealed that there were a privilaged section that wanted to fight for Mubarak’ s continuity although they fast dwindled and were heard no more! As concerns Ghadafi, he said ‘my beoble love me’ but he is now hiding in some Tuareg hole fighting for dear life.

As regards the tribal card, it is effectively being played in Yemen, but DIA has nothing there. It took 20 years, but now everybody knows that Hamasien will not lift a finger to save him. All the attempts orchestrated towards that end was a big flop. Trying to play that ethnic card backfired and his Tembenite origin surfaced and the fact that he does not have a drop of Eritrean blood became a household knowledge. Personally, DIA’s ethnic origins don’t bother me. He was born and brought up in Eritrea and that makes him a full fledged Eritrean is he so wants. It is not that he may be a distant relative of Atse Yohannes that bothers me, it is his vision and consequent cruel actions over a society that sinned in lavishing him with its complete trust.

I do not believe there will be a division as witnessed in other countries for the sake of Isayas.Cunning and crafty as he is, he made the grave error of allowing the Wutchus to thrive and forever lost any loyalty of the toiling warsays and the people at large. There will be a few, in and outside the country, I dare to say like your goodself, who will want to die for IA because of their gains during his reign but the vast majority will have everthing to gain by his fall.

Isayas is about to reap what he sowed!!! Meditate on that.

what is your comment on this Dawit Tsehaye

He is a MONSTER! .He definitely fulfills the three words:
1- Thief- His regime is not accountable for peoples money. All the companies of PFDJ has never been audited. No body knows where the 2% goes from diasporas( thanks that we know now he uses it to help Alshebab). The top military officials of this regime are the ones who help you cross the boarder from Eritrea after they charge you 10,000 USD or shot you if you try it by your self. They transfer the money to their relatives as to invest in South Sudan,UAE Uganda,Angola..etc.
2-Thug- if it is the word as mentioned in the dictionary(a common criminal, who treats others violently and roughly, often for hire) May be his highness can say i don’t mean that word if you asked him again. Any ways that word deserves to him.10 years in prison of Eritrean top officials ,religious persons, journalists… etc where no one knows of their whereabouts. slavery of national service youngsters ..a lot to mention.
3- Abuse using the power- it is huge to mention some of the most no constitution, no free press , no election, no free speech, no ownership….etc.
So his highness due to the above reasons will you be really hesitate to GO!(step down!).I can’t tell you How much I cried and was ashamed you to be named as the president of my country and try to lecture about democracy and humanity on the land of the origin of democracy and humanity.
Victory to the oppressed people of Eritrea!

  • truly, Truly i say to you October 1, 2011

I wish Amanuel Iyasu get chance to interview Isayas Afeworki like the VOA man Twolde W/ Gebreal got it. Tewolde was too soften and his approaching of the Q and A was almost similar like Tv Eri journalists approaching. Ok! Tewolde somehow tried to ask the dictator some crucial questions like about election,Somalia affairs, sanction, and houses etc, but I realy disapointed because Tewolde was simply listening him without any challenge like those TV Eri journalists when he discuring about the violation of Black Americans and Red Indian rights,as if his adminstration is very justicful to his own people. Most astonishingly he was simply listing him when he discuring about American debt. Couldn´t Tewolde ask him back for instance, did you mean your administration is more justicful and loyal than the Americans one, or even by relativing those already ridded dictatorial Arab regimes? Why Tewolde, simply listened him without challenge when he alligate the other dictators in the case of corruption and the westerns as their collaborators? Wasn´t himself the maina collaborators of Gadafi, Mubarak and others? didn´t Issayas himself ragd the red carpet to Gazafi and Mubarek, How can someone simply listen when one bush man speaking about the world economy aboiut that he doesn´t have any idea ? If i were in Tewolde´s position, I would ask the finance world expert dictator, weather Americans, Japan,German, France, Italy and other those who mentioned them as if they suffering because of Financial crises, weather they debted from Wealthy Eritrea? Additionally I was be asked him because every American is debted 50,000 dollar in case because of the poverity they have if they seek economical asylum in debtless wealthy nation Eritrea, if Issayas agree to give or to allow them grant? Atleast Tewolde why he didnt challenge him with a simple question, If the dictator is that much confident the the vast majority of the Eritrean people are supporting him from what is he scaring to make election? I hope next time these and others like constitution, free press and about endless millitary service if not Tewolde may be Minya Afeworki or Betre Seltan of VOA will raise and ask the above questions with my corrupted English I tried to explain it.

    • Taffla October 1, 2011

I agree with you about VOA’s reporter. He should have asked whereabouts of the G11 and thousands of prisoners instead of asking him about unfinished villa in Asmara. Ironically the question about villa was sent by PFJD supporter.

      • Weldit October 1, 2011

VoA is always soft-ball for GoE officials – that’s why the officials always make themselves available for VoA interviews.
The only time they are not available is when they are asked to comment about G-15. And ppl like Tewelde know how extremely sensitive the regime is to the G-15 question.
So, no VoA-Tigrinya will never ever ask about the whereabouts of the imprisoned.

    • Maazza October 1, 2011

      Truly,

What you call your corrupted English was music to my ears. Your post is very powerful. It raises and regsiters very important concerns. There is nothing you say that dose not resonate real loud and clear the anguish of the voiceless.

Please allow me to give an example here. When I read the book ‘The Colour Purple’ many many years ago, I read it in one go! I started it and finished it non-stop. This book, about the trodden and voiceless, is written in pidgeon english, a far cry from the english language proper. But, like your post, it was unputtable because the truth was going straight to your bones and marrows. The way some people speak or write in a foreign language, their message is so powerful, one is not focussing in the structure of the phrases but in the message itself. I thought your summary of the interview was precise and you clearly pointed out that a mild and soft journalist, even with an opportunity to reveal the nature of a dictator, may squander that chance. I agree with you that his mildness did not make DAI stumble as did the Al Jazzeera Jane Danton (?) who revealed some of his trueself.

Meles knew that isayas is coming to new york and called the eritrean intelectuls for a meeting with out telling them ahead of time and ofcourse they dont know the agenda. The purpose was to motivate the opostion group before isayas arrival in NY.
Everything was paid by the Ethiopian goverment transport, food, hotel and probably some pocket money for the loyal ones money that could feed a lot of addis abeba residents not far away from Ghion hotel(that is where they stayed)who are starving to death. Money the fit ber residents, the cherkos area residents, the amnuel betekristian residents (all residents not far from Ghion hotel ) could have used it to feed their children and so on. All this eritreans who went to addis can afford their expences how much could it be may be $2500 per person. Instead they prefer to take the small bread from the mouth of the hungry kids near addis abeba stadium. And the worst thing is the meeting was waste of time with out none what so ever solution neither to Eritrean people nor to Ethiopia. One can listen to the voa interview of the three Doctors that went there who dont make any point.

    • Maazza October 1, 2011

      gasha

A pathetic post! What the Meles rule is doing for Ethiopia since they came to power is glaringly evident! In all its past history of 3000 years did Ethiopia experience the advent of development as it is doing now since they took power. The Amharas, who in the beginning hated Meles, tell you this themselves. At present, there are 25 Universities in the country and there are 25 more in the pipeline! A leader of a country who, instead of boasting, publicly states his concerns regarding the quality of these higher learning institutions, speaks volumes about what he wants for his country. The Tigreans have made everlasting history in Ethiopia, whether we like it or not. Their accomplishments speak for themselves. They make and need no propoganda. The Amharas were the rulling ethnic group for eternity and the Tigreans for 20 years. The difference in achievement needs no comment.

If Isayas was doing for Eritrea what Meles is doing for Ethiopia, I think I would have been more clement. I would have seen education thriving (more graduates and professionals, more professors, more doctors, more engineers, more architechts, etc. etc.) and growing public and private enterprises, more jobs, and what have you. Our leader closed the only University and that speaks volumes. He is bent on militarization.

The poor in today’s Ethiopia are much better of than during the reigns of Mengistu, Haile Selassie or any other earlier ruller!

        Maazaa haftey,

You and I could as well be one and the same. No kidding. Before you brace your chair in shock if I am a schizoid, please allow me to explain. Not only that I agree emphatically with your stand, line of thinking and your insight about the ever troubled political dynamics in Eritrea, I agree fully with you as well your stand on Ethiopia in general and your impression about Meles in particular. When many Eritreans including in the Opposition remain ambivalent about Meles, I am of the opinion that, he is the man we could trust and listen to what he says on issues and imperatives pertaining Eritrea. Moreover, as you have aptly put it, he has done well for his country with in the last twenty years in a sharp contrast to what the ancien regime had failed to do so. Out of desperation and a bit of jealousy, I often wish his father moved to Eritrea when he married his Eritrean wife and of course we would have had the blessing of Meles being our leader. But of course, we haven’t been lucky. In the meantime, I see a glimpse of hope, as I believe that, the ever fertile Eritrean womb is not barren for it is still going to give birth to a leader of Meles’ caliber. For real.

        • Maazza October 1, 2011

          My brother Temesgen,

No, I am not bracing my shock reading your comment, I am simply delighted that we agree to such a large extent! I also confess I am truly flattered. Thank you so very much.

I just read a post in Asmarino Independent by G. Ande, entitled ‘Coming to America’ giving a summary of IA’s visit to the UN. It is a masterpiece! As our beloved, the late Poet Reesom Haile – would say, alowuna alowana! I think we have the human resources required to excell in everything, but there is a system in our country determined to ensure that it is muffled and degraded. Equality by subtraction, remember?

          Have a nice evening.

          • Temesgen Medhanie October 1, 2011

            Maazaa haftey,

Yea I read the piece by G. Ande. It sure is a time well spent reading the article. I have also enjoyed reading Selam Kidane’s otherwise superb series of articles pertaining the herds who had come out to lick Isaias’ boots. I have to confess, when I first came across your posts in this forum, I thought you were her but of course, the dots she invariably uses in her unique style of writing seem to miss in your otherwise witty and clever comments. On a separate note, did you see that, Qozam is back in full gear after a brief hiatus as he was not able to face the harsh reality as we cornered him with concrete questions? Looking forward to read your rebuttal to his crass comments and not so often intellectually stimulating inputs.
