ኣብነታውያን ጓሶት ምኻንኩም ዘርኣኹምና ጳጳሳት ካቶሊካዊት ቤተክርስትያን ምስግና ይግብኣኩም። እቶም ብመንፈስ ዝወለዱና ጳጳሳት ተዋህዶ ኸኣ ልቢ ይሃብኩም። መራሕቲ ሃይማኖት፣ ዓበይቲ ዓዲ፣ ሞያውያን ሃገራውያን…ኣውያት ሕዝብኹም እንተኣቃሊሕኩም እቲ ዘኢዱ ዘይረኸበ ገርሂን ለዋህን ሕዝቢ ኪርህዎ እዩ። ኣምላኽውን ትሪ ልብና ርእዩ ክሳብ ክንድዚ ክንዋረድ ፈቒዱ ዝኸውን።

I wish I could write you in Tigrinia. The spiritual power and the conviction of the Catholic Bishops does not come from the Vatican or the Pope of Rome. If one trusts in people or places (in this case the Vatican) one is doomed.A person is strenghthened by his/her own internal spiritual power. HIGDEF, has in the past years confiscated so much property, including the University of Asmara, from the Catholic Church. You wouldn’t believe the damage HGDEF did to the Eritrean Catholic Church.. You wouldn’t believe the division HIGDEF created between, lowland Catholics and highland Catholics. HIGDEF even created division between Catholic Bishops by ethnicity.
Spiritual Catholic Schools (seminaries) were divided by ethnicity.
You may remember that the only person who stood up against the Derg genocide in Ona and Besigdira in 1970, was Bishop Abraha Francois. On the big feast day of Saint Michael of Keren, where all the Tor Serawit Officials (the Killers were invited) Bishop Abraha said “Ketalay Rebrabay”… If you kill, you will be killed by the same sword you used to kill” . And indeed everyone of them was later killed in one way or another.
The Catholic Church did too, what it could to free Patriarch Antonius. Please Almaz do not jump in things you are not sure of. I am a Catholic and I know how my church hierarchy works. Esayas does not fear anybody in this world, including the Vatican. Fear is not in his vocabulary only when it comes to his personal safety…. then he kills.

Dear Fesseha,
Allow me put into the right perspective what Gual Mendefera meant. The Catholic Church is universal and all major decisions are done in Rome by the Vatican. The appointment of bishops comes, as well, from Rome. The ultimate authority of the Catholic Church is the Pope. The Vatican has Apostolic Nunciature (Embassies) in all countries like any other sovereign state; which the Orthodox don’t have. Therefore the Vatican is a heavy moral authority in the world with 1.2b members. Whereas our Orthodox brothers don’t have a centralize head like the Catholic Church. Each nation has its own Patriarch (Pope).
What our sister, Gual Mendefera meant to say is that it is easier to attack a structure that does not have a foreign link, than the one which is protected by protocols and outside authority. It is just a question of understanding how things work and no one should be offended. I say this because I am a Catholic and I know how our Church functions.

Excellent work which call for spiritual, social, political and moral renewal.
These Bishops or their predecessors had written similar letters in the past. One was after the liberation of Eritrea, and the other was after the border war with Ethiopia. I remember Journalist Habtom Yohannes referring to that letter in his memorable candid writings.
If all Eritreans would strive reclaiming our noble culture, history and identity we would have peaceful life.

Finally the Catholic Bishops wrote their pastoral letter. I am very proud of them. All over the world Catholic Bishops defend the rights of the people, especially when it is downtrodden. It is the tradition of the Catholic Church following the example of Jesus. I am sure the regime of Isayas is angered by this letter. Finally, somebody has the guts to tell him enough is enough. He can’t continue sucking the blood of innocent people. Eritrea belongs first of all to God and them to the people. Everybody has the right to say his opinion on national affairs. Enough with putting people in prison without charge. Enough with free labor. Enough with human trafficking. Enough with corruption. Enough with one man show.
I only ask Assenna to put the photo of Kidane Mehret of Cathedral, instead of Inda Mariam. The pastoral letter comes from the Catholic Bishops and not from the Orthodox bishops. No offence meant. It is question of correct information.
