More than 40% of Eritreans understand Tigre and more Eritreans speak in Afar and Kunama languages than in Arabic but there is no single Eritrean opposition radio station that broadcasts in Tigre!

Why is there no respect to Tigre language in Diaspora? Are we suffering from some sort of mental slavery in Diaspora?
In Eritrea, Tigre radio and tv programs are the most popular, even than Tigrinya broadcasts. There is more pride among Eritreans in Eritrea than some of the would-be opposition Eritreans in diaspora suffering in mental slavery.

If Eritreans are ashamed about their own languages and identity such as Tigre, then Eritrea is not worthy of all the sacrifice paid.

    • MightyEmbasoyra February 26, 2014

      Brother/Sister Paradiso,
You really seem to care about Tigre language. How about you contribute to that? Join the Assenna volunteers team. Act on it and fix what you see is lacking. Just a thought.

      • Te'um February 27, 2014

I agree. Why has Tigre been excluded from the announcement? Something must be wrong. Failing to include it will be unfairly discriminating against the language and its speakers, given Afar and Kunama (languages spoken by far less number of people) are being considered as media of broadcast.

Please do tell me, “come on then, do something about it.” I can’t because I am not as fluent as I wish to be in this beautiful language. But there could be many people out there who could do something about it. Just update this call to include them. If Assenna got a special reason to exclude Tigre, it should be explained to readers.

Overall, though, I commend Assenna for its plans to expand its services to include other languages.

        • Te'um February 27, 2014

          I mean , “please do NOT tell me . . .”

    • Nemeramer February 27, 2014

I think Assenna’s move is very clever and we should understand it. Although Tigre is undeniably widely spoken there must be other considerations for asena to take this decision. Both Kunama & Afar are in a precarious situation at this point in time: the Kunamas are probably at the early stage of extinction due to the wrong policy of the PFDJ, many have fled to Ethiopia and those at home are not happy; while Afar are pushing for the long held tendency of breaking away to form an Afar state along with the Afar ethnic groups in Ethiopia & Djibouti. Asena may have medium term plans for Tigre, while they could be represented in the Arabic program at least for the time being. Therefore, the decision they have taken now is far sighted and consistent with their strong position to maintain Eritrean unity. They should be applauded for that.

      • Te'um February 27, 2014

Nemeramer, your explanation makes some sense, although I take it with some skepticism.

It would have been good if Assenna sheds some light on the issue we are discussing, not you. I always find it difficult to understand when media outlets, institutions, parties and individuals who have the right answers leave their followers and readers to speculate and guess about critical issues. It is common these days to see members of the public struggling or quarreling with each other while guessing and speculating about the meaning of what has been said or posted. See how the public was negatively affected by Medrekh’s deafening silence. We have witnessed some nearly reaching the brink of cyber- war of regionalism because of this irresponsible act by the group.

I know Assenna cannot answer every question thrown at him, and neither do I expect other institutions or parties to do so. I respect that stand and I understand the wisdom behind it. But there are always important and crucial questions and issues that need immediate explanation by those who initiate them. This is especially true when said or posted by institutions and influential people. The Awate Team seem to be leading the way in coming out and communicating with their readers.

The question at hand, regarding Tigre as a broadcasting language in Assenna, is I believe one issue that needs proper explanation by Assenna.

How can you speak of plans to start broadcasting in Kunama and Afar before you speak of Tigre unless you have a special explanation for doing so? As I said, the explanation you have given makes sense, but to a limited extent. In fact for some, it may not make sense as you seem to imply that the situation of our Tigre speaking population is less concerning compared to that of the Kunamas and the Afars. I do not see your point. I doubt if Assenna’s new plan is solely to preach to the Afars and Kunamas about Eritrean unity as you allude (I will wait and see).

In fact, strategically speaking, it is better to exhaust the meager resources Assenna has reaching the Tigrinya and Tigre speaking populations (which comprise more than 80% of the nation’s population). That would have hastened change for everybody, including the Kunamas and Afars. Broadcasting to the Kunamas and Afars for me is like preaching to the already converted, as historically these are the most oppressed sections of our society who would not hesitate to stand against any oppressor. The real preaching should be directed towards the Tigrinya speaking population first, followed by the next largest population, which is Tigre, and so on. I said Tigrinya first not only because the language is the most widely spoken but also because major percentage of this community [both the PFDJites and members of the opposition] need serious education about democracy, tolerance, unity, human rights, regionalism, and you name it. Any airtime given to this population is worth it, given the contents of the programs are mature and highly educational, which I have yet to see.

Broadcasting in Arabic, on the other hand, is being done purely for political purposes and is a waste of resources at this point in time for me. I know I am not being politically correct. All Arabic speaking Eritreans can understand either Tigrinya or Tigre while no one can claim the other way round. So, where is the efficiency and wisdom of broadcasting in Arabic when members of this constituency can understand Tigrinya and Tigre well? I am not against the use of Arabic when there is enough resources [I am appalled by Assenna’s proposal to start a Sunday entertainment as if that is what Eritreans are lacking]. I am not also against Arabic being one of the national/official languages in future Eritrea because there is a domestic and regional role this strategy plays. But to use it for domestic opposition broadcasts now when resources are meager is redundant for me. [I am keen to be advised if we have populations that rely on Arabic as their sole medium of daily life.]

          Nemeramer
Wisely said arguments to see facts beyond emotion . Kunama and Afar political issues is critical to the nation stability which needs great attention before we wind up on unsuitable situations. And the more we neglect each other the more there bad wishers control the upper hand game.

    • abdu February 27, 2014

      Pardiso
I agree with some of y’r comment. But; it’s not all about this percentage speaks this language and that percentage speaks that language comparison issue. Well; first of all what asenna’s action taking place it’s good and remarkable move and a unification invitation. But; in the other hand that you may not understand some of our opposition web sites didn’t or don’t broad cast in so many divisible languages not because of in a favour of in one particular language ; what it is because of a lot of or significant and substantial amount of Eritrean Muslim community as well as Christians speak and understand Arabic that is the reason. Instead of sending y’r message in ten different languages ; if those nine ethnic groups majority people can understand you it’s better to send it in one that send the message; and it is very good to provide and serve in each and every ethnic eritrean group in their own language but; that is far from reality . Because; first of all it will demand huge amount of finance ; second we are in a struggle and we are not in a luxury may be one day near future.

First i appreciate u accept your Habesh Origin ,that is the sign of recovery from Arabism cancer.

” it is very good to provide and serve in each and every ethnic eritrean group in their own language but; that is far from reality . ” so why not Tigre and Tigrigna which covers 80/0 of the population. Why you hate Tigre. For your information ,Have u ever heard that Jebha burned Tigre books. How can you explain an identity crises then Brother?
Why you hate your own language?

    • Teclay February 28, 2014

      Paradiso
I agree it is paradox, and it is identity crises ,every one in the world respects his language Ex Somalis ,Djibouti,Indonesians etc but not in Eritrea, the eri. Muslims are happy to be Arab slaves ,even the poor HAbesha Jeberti. Every thing is paradox in ERitrea we have to live with it

      • abdu February 28, 2014

        Teclay (Toni tekak )
I know you are a rich Italian . But; we are a poor habesha ; so who is here having identity crises? I think it is important for you to read your history before you opened up your filthy mouth about jeberti.

  • Zufana February 26, 2014

    Mighty,
I agree with you S.S(solomon sahele) just being a student as well as a foot soldier.
How about their ugly pig looking Sofia Hawlal? I am sure u can fit her in somewhere!

    • MightyEmbasoyra February 27, 2014

      Zufana,
Sofia is kind of ignorant ‘educated’ person that is filled with personal hatred on Ethiopia. Here hatred has nothing to do with Eritrean issue, but personal. So, she is trying to get a personal revenge of hers and using Eritrea as excuse. Usually, I see people who born and/or raised outside of Eritrea has common sense but in her case, it is confusing. She may not be mentally stable as well. Sometimes I suspect colonel Dawit is Sofia the devil. Of course, I could be way off.

      • belay nega March 5, 2014

        Dear Mighty,

“Usually, I see people who born and/or raised outside of Eritrea has common sense ”
        What do you mean?
        Can you prove it?

    • selamawit2 February 27, 2014

“Sofia Hawlal” – oh Zufana, i love your sense of humor (too)! 🙂
Normally i wouldn’t laugh about a person with such eyes, but in this case i am sure, it is a sign from above, telling/warning us she has a thoroughly “Hawlal” spirit.

      • Zufana February 27, 2014

        Hi Selum(selamawit2)Haftey,
I love you sis and i love your bit of ‘she has a thoroughly “Hawlal” sprit too.

paradiso, I agree. More than 40% people are from Tigre ethnic group and a great proportion of the eritrean people understand Tigre. It is good to be inclusive but, it is always good to have an excellent trategy..only 0.6% and 0.4% represent the Kunama and Afara

You guys are very funny… Thanks for the laugh!

  • Truly Truly i say to you February 27, 2014

Dear Amanuel Iyasu, not from PFDJ cult worshipers but from the familiar and friends of Assenna i heard and watching expanding negative doubt and rummer partially legitimate critic, for you allowing, of all others more relevant Eritrean languages widely spoken by population for you prioritizing the Afar and Kunamas language to which by very minority population spoken language, people because start relating this matter with Afar and Kunama separatist groups and with Woyane agenda, as if you sympathizing with them; this matter before turned worsening and people continue this rummer corruptly interpreting to your probably good intention, it needs urgent transparency and clarification about its motive from you, like you and we requesting Medrek to be transparent. Your familiar and sympathizer of Assenna friend, Truly Truly!
The bible says, Better to correct someone openly than to let him think you do not care for him at all. A friend means well, even when he hurts you. But when an enemy puts his arm around your shoulder watch out! (Proverbs, 27, 5-6)

    • ahmed saleh February 27, 2014

      Truly
I think it is wise enough if we can identify the relationship between political organizations &
populations . Communicating with those people in concern to our common issues in regard of our country political mess can create
an atmosphere of understanding . Do not forget
Wedi Vocaro mission for Unity . I think assena
tried to take a step for same purpose to bring the people together than following the silly politics . I expect all justice seekers look the matter positively and throw their support behind Amanuel and staff to voice for our
people . Myself I look forward to learn more from genuine and progressive Afar or Kunama
      Eritrean nationalsists .

      • Zufana February 27, 2014

        Ato Ahmed Saleh,
Well said brother. I salute you for your positive and constructive response to Truly.
We need many more highly matured and far sighted people like you in our society.
Thank you again for your positive comments.

        Truly,
It should be on a 21st century principle of matual benefit and respect. “Living and
developing together” that is on “Let us grow together” label. Now, Mr Truly, please
tell me what and where your fear is coming from?

Kunama and Afar people cases has become vital concern on Eritrean political issues . ASSENNA intention to build bridge for UNITY by reaching directly with those people is part of our fight against those politicians who try to control in divided fanctions . Actions have consequences
and assenna keep trying regardless political consequence because the goal is to come with new spotlights to people’s power struggle tactic.
At the end let’s show tolerance on each other to
    defeat the odd .

  • Wasdemba February 27, 2014

The question is that Why is the Tigre language spoken by 40% of Eritrea and understood by more than 60% ignored? Let alone Tigre, every language in Eritrea that is endemic to the land is very important.
We should be thankful that the Kunama, the Bilen and Afars are very brave and strong enough to preserve unique Eritrean languages thus far.
This generation should support every ethnic Eritrea to protect its unique identity because if we lose the Bilen or the Kunama language …, we will lose an entire history and identity. Otherwise, adopting the Amharic or Italian languages and getting rid of the others would have been easier than sacrificing thousands of our beloved young Eritreans during liberation.

  • Jorjo February 28, 2014

To bring people in understanding each other with their diversities, the demo.archive.assenna.com way is right. If possible try to involve the Tigre language too in near future. However; we should not have to twist the issue into the advantage of brutal regime, the PFDJ. What I have to suggest demo.archive.assenna.com is to make the platform to a better Eritrean unity than a stage of quarreling or accusing each other. Wishing every positive in your struggle against the incumbent dictatorial regime in Eritrea.

  • selamawit2 February 28, 2014

Wasdemba, i do not know the statics but if this is true, that up 60& of the eritreans understand Tigre, the language should of course have its adequate place in our media and in our society!

aditionally i think one can judge a society by the way it treats the minority! let’s show our kunama and saho brothers and sisters how we appreciate them and let’s be generous with the space they get in our society and media, even if they are few percentage of the eritrean society.
we all have wounds that need to be healed but it seems to me the wounds of this sisters and brothers, and fathers and mothers need even more care.

p.s. me personally, i am very, very curious to learn more about my kunama and saho brothers and sisters and i would LOVE to interact with them.
my god, our culture is really so rich!!!

here is a video on eritrean kuname refugees i found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGEQmG8l2Zk

      selamiwt2,
wasdemba is certainly right, he/she wrote “The question is that Why is the Tigre language spoken by 40% of Eritrea and understood by more than 60% ignored? Let alone Tigre, every language in Eritrea that is endemic to the land is very important.”

As a recent visitor to Eritrea, I can confirm that more than a third of Eritrea are ethnic Tigre and more than 50% understand the Tigre language – Tigrait. When it comes to radio, I don’t know a lot about Eri-Tv, the Tigre broadcasting is more popular than Tigrinya language programming among the Warsay generation, the peasant and pastoral groups of Eritrea.

Selamawit2, you made a good observation, “aditionally i think one can judge a society by the way it treats the minority! let’s show our kunama and saho brothers and sisters how we appreciate them and let’s be generous with the space they get in our society and media, even if they are few percentage of the eritrean society.”

All Eritreans in the southern periphery of Eritrea, along the Ethio-Eritrea border are the main victims of the current stalemate of the no-war-no-peace situation, especially the Kunama, Saho, Afar and the Tigrinyas south of the Adikeyh-Mendefra-Areza line. There is no doubt the Kunama and Afars are on the verge of extinction and they need all the support to broadcast their plight and preserve their history, culture and tradition. For your information, according to the official record, the majority of the Lampedusa tragedy were from Zoba Debub and the city of Asmara.

      • selamawit2 March 1, 2014

p.s. sorry, i didn’t mention the eritrean afar. of course i meant eritrean kunama and saho as place marker for all minorities in eritrea!

          p.p.s
i don’t know how many rashaidas are involved in human trafficking but of course every single criminal person/clan should be charged HEAVILY – no matter it is a member of a minority or not!!!
