The United Nations has lifted its sanctions on Eritrea, nine years after they were imposed by the international organisation.

Wednesday’s decision, made during a meeting of the UN Security Council, follows a rapprochement between Eritrea and neighbouring Ethiopia in recent months.

The Security Council welcomed the improved relationship between the two countries but added that Eritrea needs to strive for closer ties with its other neighbour, Djibouti.

Eritrea and Djibouti have been at odds over a border dispute since June 2008 that led to military clashes which killed a dozen Djiboutian troops.

Repeated violence over the disputed territory raised fears the conflict could engulf the entire Horn of Africa region.

Arms embargo

In 2009, the UN imposed a nationwide arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze on certain people and entities after accusing Eritrea of supporting armed groups in Somalia.

Eritrea has denied those allegations.

Earlier this year, Eritrea and Ethiopia signed a peace deal after a decades-long dispute.

Following that peace agreement, Eritrea asked the UN to lifts its sanctions, pointing to the region’s diplomatic shifts.

The dispute started in the early 1990s, when Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia, after which a war broke out later that decade over border disputes.

A 2002 UN-backed boundary demarcation was meant to settle the dispute for good, but Ethiopia refused to abide by it.

A turnaround began in June this year when Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that Ethiopia would hand back to Eritrea the disputed areas, including the flashpoint town of Badme, where the first shots of the border war were fired.

In September, two border crossings were reopened just days before the countries signed a peace deal in Saudi Arabia, officially ending hostilities.

After the signing of that deal in Saudi Arabia, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told journalists “a wind of hope” was blowing in the Horn of Africa.

“It is not only the peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea – it is the fact that tomorrow and the day after tomorrow we will have, here in Saudi Arabia, the president of Djibouti and the president of Eritrea – two countries that have also been at odds with each other,” the UN chief said.

UN Sanction 1907 on Eritrea wasn’t worth the paper it was written. It had no impact on the regime nor the people of Eritrea.

      What the people of Eritrea want are two sanctions imposed on Eritrea;

      (a) Economic sanctions on Eritrea until the regime lifts its economic sanctions on its own people, and

      (b) Human rights sanctions – until the regime frees all political prisoners and implements the rule of law and commerce.

Such sanctions would clearly hurt the people of Eritrea in the short term but would definitely obliterate the regime for good, which is exactly what the people of Eritrea want.

      Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

I’ve heard folks here and there talking applesauce things. Shame on to all Woyane tags I just wish you to stop/refrain viewing non sense on PIA. PIA is a great man, but lets get this straight, he is a living hero not only for Eritrea but for whole region. Believe or not PIA is a LIBERATOR. He could have some mistakes because he is human. HOWEVER, he fought for his principals, he fought for what he and the Eritrean mass believed in. That is what makes him a great leader of our region. God Bless Eritrea and the people of this glorious country under the leadership of PFDJ/PIA.!!!!!!!!!!!!

We, Eritreans including the supporters isaias afewerk, must humbly acknowledge that the current rapprochement between Eritrea and Ethiopia and all that positive consequences that have been transpiring was not the result of the work of isaias afewerk or any one else but the result of the heroic Oromo youngsters, the Qeros’ defeat over woyane.

But if the woyane defeat brought the current prospect of peace, does that mean the Eritreans who have been flocking behind woyane were working against their own self interest?

Most of them,Yes. But there were also others whose interest was identical with that of woyane to decimate Eritrea by slicing it piecemeal.

What about those who have been supporting isaias afewerk?

The majority were patriots whom isaias afewerk had duped to become his unwitting accomplices. Now they are abandoning him in droves because ,after the curtain behind which he had been hiding is crumbling down, they can see clearly who really he is, The rest are his types whose Eritrawnet is a sort of Dorho Tsahtira Tewtsoo.
Would isaias afewerk shamelessly claim to be the authority who brought the downfall of woyane?

Yes, he would. There should be no doubt about that but we must never allow him to get away with that because we have uptodate information at the tip of our fingers and potent tools to expose him every step of the way.

Remember, the 1998 war was his brainchild for which he purposely handed Badme to woyane in 1985. It was his premeditated war. He tried to conceal this truth by labeling it as a war of self defense against woyane alleged invasion. But then he did not inform the UNSC and OAU of the alleged incident. Why? Because for him the war was not an end by itself but a means for his own hidden agenda against Eritrea and it’s people. It was for this reason that after the Algiers Treaty was signed instead of returning the country into state of normalcy,he plunged it into his Reign of Terror that is still raging unabated. Even now, unless he is forced to back off, he will never abandon his hidden agenda on his own Free will.

The current situation between Eritrea and Ethiopia has noting to do with any Africans. It is bigger than that. It is a geopolitical action of super powers. The Eritrean people are just been used. DIA was implanted in to our country in the 1960s. But Eritreans have the right to bring the dictator to justice. We have the right, like the Ethiopians have full right to hold the woyane leaders accountable..

UN the criminals club. Always working against the Eritrean people. When was DIA and his dogs under any restriction from crimes?. DIA has been selling our gold, moving around the world freely. There wasn’t any real sanction. So stop your fake action. UN has no respect for human kind and vice versa. The bloody devil is running the God damn world.

  • k.tewolde November 15, 2018

No surprise there, the sanction just got tighter on the repressed Eritrean people giving their tormentors more torture tools in their hand, however, deja vu, it is the 1950’s version of 2018,Hizbi Eritra has to get up together and dust their laurels and yank this sanction that was partially placed upon themselves for decades and win their freedom anew.It is not far fetched folks. It is not the end of the world. It was done before,we just choose to do things the hard and arduous way.

Ghirmay? I know this is not your real name…. For the sake of argument, let say that is your real name and you are a very damage Eritrean man. When woyane were active disrupting our discussion here at Assenna, it was hard who was who between Isaias Afewerk’s zombies like you VS out of control woyane’s dogs. Now, it is clear that you aren’t woyane, but one of the zombie outbreak. Let me say this, you as a human being, you were given a function brain at birth that means you weren’t born with extra chromosome. Let us get that out of the way.

You as an Eritrean man, you are not concern by Isaias Afewerk’s statement. ” I will give my life for Ethiopia” ” We haven’t lost anything” I am not concern about the Eritrean people under PM Aby” Until you are able to answer these questions, You are irrelevant to the reality of Eritrean people. Mark my words, once we get rid of this demented dictator, the Eritrean people will come, after you and your kinds. The woyane situation should be a lessen for you. The Eritrean people will use the God given law of the land, Hegi enda aba It will be used on you with all its weight.
