When independence dawned me and my colleagues arrived three months after and found the euphoria had subsided.  Our friends of the armature soccer club, Mitchell Cots, would claim we had missed a lot of fun; this can only happen once in lifetime and it was long awaited non-stop music, and street dance.  In the morning hours of the 24th of May 1991 Dawit goes down town Asmara and saw the tanks rolling in the street of Asmara.  At the sight of Tegadelti Dawit was so overwhelmed by his emotions and could not help but shade his tears, tells me another chap.    Loving and sentimental person that he was, running tears down was an expression of his a happy surprise, atypical of an Eritrean. And so Dawit’s joy brought by the territorial independence lasted longer.

Teasing was very much part of the culture of that association but none was bitter or with intent to harm. This one was about Dawit’s   one year old daughter requesting Tesfaldent Briged’s song ‘Sembel’ a popular hit in those days.   We would jokingly say ‘How can Dina, a one year old send a post to Dimtsi Hafash requesting a song dedicated to her father?’ Dawit joined in the loud laugher.

Sembel is what Dawit called home.  In the Deki Bolis community Sembel means human warmth and care if afforded.   It was the heydays of the following 1991 and when the funds of love among Eritreans were full.

Yes, Dina at that age could love and be loved,  and had voice of her own. But where is Dina now? I will come back to this later on in my writing.

Last weekend Bologna was a contested public space representing two contradictory but by no means equal forces in the diaspora Eritrean community. One can say they represented polarities within the Eritrean political and social landscape. Viewing Eritreans contesting to make their voices hear in the two parallel events,  brings to mind lots of questions around?  We may raise fundamental questions at the stark contrast of the intent of the kind of participants and whether they really belong to one society.  What about the morality of the Eritrean society?   Morality?  There is nothing to add after the Eritrean Catholic Bishops letter under ‘Where is your Brother’.

For all the claims that  the opposition  is deeply divided and fragmented  in the two day long of resistance, justice loving  Eritrean were brought under one unified voice articulated in their  resounding of ‘no to dictatorship’. Whereas  the force of status qua invoked the empty ‘Bologna’ narrative that served Eritrean people as an icon in their quest for freedom.  This was greedily hijacked to serve a selfish goal.  In their feast of fools, the participants showed us their right place in humanity society.  Indeed, they proved to us they made the bottom of humanity as embodiments of humankind’s callousness to fellow humankind.  Closed behind heavily insulated camp they flirtingly danced to fascists’ tone.  To add colour were present the architect of the transnational control, the despot’s right-hand man Yemane Ghebreab and his entourage on their sponsored holiday.

The good news is that this occasion helped us measure HiGdef’s energy and calibrate its remaining supporters’ intelligence. Not any more priding in their numerical superiority, they can only give comfort to each other in their showy, unnatural, and boring rituals.

As opposed to the forces of gloom, in the quarters of the justice loving and their solidarity partners it was easy to note the spontaneous and human element that was driving the whole event. The Italian solidarity added a special effect through the creative enactment of the Lampeduza tragedy. The sombreness set the participant to join in deep though honouring the dead. Then there was the poetic representation of the episodes in two trans-Mediterranean languages, Italian and Arabic in remembrance of the victims of Lampeduza tragedy, a tribute well performed.

Now I will come back to the story of my friend Dawit, his first born daughter Dina, and mother Senait.  Senait happened to be my childhood neighbour. She is an example of Eritrean family woman. Both Dawit and Senait had hoped that independence was going to usher to a brighter future for their daughter. Overjoyed, Dawit had shed tears on that eventful morning of May 24th 1991.

Now to his utter disillusionment Dawit lost his first born beautiful daughter. Dina was devoured by the cruel sea in the Lampeduza tragedy and that very tender-hearted man was devastated as a consequence.

I must say I am not writing to incite hate nor remind my friend of his grief. I don’t want to add to emotional damage these insensitive fellow country people inflicted on Dina’s parents. But, we will not ignore the wound these selfish people with dead conscience caused by bringing their guaila closer to Dina and disturb her in her deep sleep and calm.   I want to say to Dawit, my friend   ‘Don’t let your heart be consumed by what has befallen you’.    Dina and all victims of the human crisis in Eritrea will never be forgotten;   for they have been immortalized by the united forces of justice at Bologna.

Justice will prevail!

what the hell is wrong with you guys?

  • woldu tekle July 9, 2014

Memhr Chefena….Nice to hear from you. My former teacher at UOA. I am glad you are on the side of justice.I am happy to read your thoughtful article. Again nice to hear from you sir.

  • woldu tekle July 9, 2014

Memhir Chefena…. I am deeply saddened by Dina’s story. She and the other 365 precious children of Eritrea are victims of the PFDJ regime and their supporters. We as a people are failed to stand for our right then and now.It is time now to stand for our basic human rights together united.

  • woldu tekle July 9, 2014

    Mr. Ashebr:
you can disagree with the writer’s idea but attacking him personally is the behavior of PFDJ sir.

    Dear Chefena,

Nice to learn you are fine and in safe place outside that hell in earth , Eritrea. Your friends lose is really very sad indeed but what can I say we all are very unlucky after thousands paid their life for freedom ,peace and prosper-ties, we end in this dire situation. We though they are our liberators, our very sisters and brothers. Our expectation was high and presumed our future and those future generation was bright. Even those intellectuals we expect them to know better assured us we are different and we will accelerate to success and progression. When the truth was we were/are worse of the others. Those our liberates were in fact they were not free themselves let alone to free us. They were simple a war machine who execute order from their superiors without any question. They were even shoot at and killed their disabled fighters, they harassed their mothers and rape their young sisters. They bring horror to the society never seen before. Dina and her generation were/are the prime victims. They endure an imaginable suffering at the hand of those pseudo-liberators. The sad thing is that their are many willing co-operators in diaspora who lost their dignity and humanity. Newri zeyfeltu. Nowramat…Kubur hawi keep up your good work every bit helps to liberate ourselves. I am sure there are no lasting regime and HGDF will not be different. Kiniewet ena!!

It is not a surprise that Bolongan represents two totally opposit grupes. It is always two sides. What nerves the Whole world is the majority is pfdj. If we compare the influx of eri refugees and their stories how they are abused in their homeland, and their representation in Bolonga then the conclussion takes a wrong turn of events that is the international community is coned by pfdj. What i mean is still the majority who are abused did not make it to Europa, only pfdj families who enjoy the frut of their suffocation of the mass of Eritreans by selling the oppressed People of Eritrea.

Pfdj is outsmarting not only eritreans but even the international world. This cone artists are too much for the civilized world. Whether eritreans like it or not, eritreans represented by pfdj in or out. If you dont blieve me come to Norway and look how the eri refugees worship the pfdj social workers and translators. These refugees even forget that it is the Norwegian goverment which gives them protection.

Did you see OUR LIBERATION FLAG in HIGDEF’s camp?

NO, NO…you can see only ISAYAS’s FLAG!

You can only see two flags made by the tyrant Isayas!
    {Before and after Independence}

    Two flags made by Isayas,
    Belong to the tyrant ISAYAS,
    And represent the tyrant Isayas!

The only way to victory is to untie all our nationalities, our original provinces and raise our original flag, (SEMAYAWIT BANDERANA).
We did it in our struggle for independence and we succeeded.
    We will do it again!
    Our victory is certain!

TIME FOR all freedom fighter Eritreans to raise only one flag,
    OUR LIBERATION FLAG!

    • Paradiso July 10, 2014

Someone answered to Semhar rightly her obsession about the hand me semayawit cherqi from the one time UN rep to Eritrea:

Though Semhar has every right to say what she wants to say, Semhar included some unnecessary comments such as:
      “
1) Put down the tyrant Isayas’s flag and rise up our liberation flag!

2) dismantle the dictator’s zobas and replace them by our original provinces!”

Semhar, these are not Eritrea’s core problems. Who cares about the colour of the blue cherqi that was handed by the UN to Somalia, Eritrea and Libya (all former Italian colonies) which the Libyans rejected it out right and then the EPLF later. At least the Hgdefites have a “Made in Eritrea” cherqi, not a hand me, second hand left over from the UN.

As to the Awraja names, some of the new are better than the old names such as Anseba, from Anseba river that cuts through it, Gash-Barka because it is between the two rivers. The Red Sea regions of North and south are great too because they are beside the sea. The only not so good names are Zoba Debub and may be Zoba Maekel. If you want the original ones drawn out by the Italians and adopted by Haileselassie later, then you have to respect the Afars by not calling them “denkelia” which is an Arabic insult and epithet. You also need to respect the Saho people by not dividing them into many parts of the old Semhar and Akeleguzay. What about respecting the people of Logo Chewa with their own Awraja who have very long history of their own in Kebesa rather than dividing them into Hamasien and Seraye regions. More can be said about the Kunama, Nara .. who want their own region …
Plus dividing a small land of 3 million in to ten or nine administrative parts is very expensive to the local and central government.

        Wedage Felat,

You said that eritrean flag was given by UN and HGDF flag and HGDF zoba is fine. What a loser. Eritrea is the creation of colonisation like any other countries in Africa or others. If those UN flag or awraja has no meaning then Eritrea has been based on hollow in thin air. This is typical deki 40 method of destroying Eritrean identity in most sh-rued way. Try to lecture in PFDJ site my friend. Tomorrow you will tell us change you village name in to numerical sequence. No more my friend whether we are 3mil or 300m, I am proud Akeleghuzetay or Hamasenay. Kunama Nara Bilen all the same. Had libi had hizbi old shitara…P Off.
