“If we no longer treat the dead with dignity what hope is here for the living”

Condolences to the family of Naizgi Kiflu that is to his wife, his son and daughter and relatives.

People say that you can measure how civilized a country is by the way it treats its dead. That is dignified burial. The world community is moving into the brave new world of designer babies, face transplant and cloning. These advances are held to be evidences of the superiority and prowess of our civilization. Yet the way we treat the dead is of the greatest possible significance, not just to the health services but to the society at large. If we do not show respect to the dead, we will not show it to the living.

Death is inevitable. Naizghi Kiflu died Feb 6th 2012 in London a natural death at the age possibly 70 years. Yet his corpse did not get proper burial not because his family could not afford it, not because the British government did not give permit, but the dictatorial regime PFDJ in Eritrea did not allow entry of Naizghi Kiflu’s corpse to Eritrea for dignified burial. Highland Eritrean Christians always prefer to bury the dead at his/her village of origin. This is the norm of the Eritrean highland society and this is not the norm of only Eritrean but of most world society.

I knew Naizghi since my school age days first at Tipo elementary school then at St. George middle school in Mendefera and at a high school in Asmara. Naizghi battled colonialism since his middle school days.

NAIZGHI’S FIGHT WITH COLONIALS

People say beauty is on the eye of the beholder. My take on Naizghi’s struggle for independence and after is based on observed facts and reported information.

a)     His struggle started during middle school days when he led the demonstration of St. George middle school student in support of the students of high school students in Asmara. Then he continued it by distributing fliers in Mendefera and Asmara during his high school days. He was also the brave man who organized the most cells of Movement of seven{ mahber 7} ,organize demonstrations. Because of these activities he was expelled from high school along with the late Andemicael Kahsai and were exiled to Ethiopia Where he continued his struggle. Then he got scholarship to the Soviet Union stayed in other countries and joined the armed struggle in 1972.

b)    I met him in Sahel for a brief time in 1976 that we only exchanged greeting. 1974 is the time Naizghi started to put black spots in his endeavor for independence. He became right hand man of Isaias Afeworhi and had a role in the execution of the revolutionaries (MENKA). There is also information that implicates him in many ways as a minister of information, vice chief of security——-etc. This is second hand information that I can not conform or reject.

c)     Naizghi Kiflu was an intelligent, bold, hard working and visionary. People who grew up with him expect from him a document of the struggle of EPLF and PFDJ and his vision for the future. I am sure the Eritrean people will forgive him for certain misdeeds the moment that document surfaces.

Eternal life to Naizghi Kiflu and condolences to his family and relatives.

What is wrong with you Assenna ..you post something wich is not true. you try to make him from Zero to hero..the man deserve nothing but shame and disgrace for his being human. The tears of and the blood of true Eritreans is shouting from the moutain of Sahel to Asmara and everywhere in Eritrea where the cruel man stepped his stinky foot.

    • zisimebelieve March 1, 2012

Could you tell me what makes naizgi from G 15? If you could give a good reason, i will accept your accusation and join you on blaming Nizgi for all the misdeed committed by EPLF. Just one thing that makes him more pron to be called “Zero”.
The tears and blood of eritrean are in the hands of all EPLF leaders, including Those who are imprisoned in September 2001.if you can stand to support them today, you are dishonest to dismay Naizgi kiflu.

Perfectly said! Some people choose sides based on convenience. That is what we call an opportunist. It weakens everybody cause!

I am sorry to contradict Aamare because a visisonary can not be a liquidator and a bootlicker of a crack despotic leader. Naizgi never regretted his crime against his revolutionary comrades, because he perpetrated atrocious crime until he was relegated to the recycle bin by the dictator. In fact, Naizgi is a man who spoiled his positive qualities for the loyalty of a single autocratic man. As However brutal Naizgi may have been, as Amare said a corpse must be the dignity of recent butial. As Seyoum Tesfay said ashes to ashes and earth to earth. May his soul rest in peace and condolence to his innocent family who are unnecessarily bearing the burden of his crimes.

I have to disagree with your article big time in principle not of small events that you describe. From your point of view, you seem to forget that many Tegadelti dead or alive had a right vision when they joined the struggle. But many have done so and martyred with dignity while Naizgi did not, In fact he is equally responsible for many crimes perpetrated to many innocents and hence guilty for ever as his animistic boss. Although I agree with your sympathy to his relatives and should not be denied his eternal rest in which the criminals in Asmara have no right to do so. Hence condolence to the family as they have nothing to do with the crime he committed.

YA VISISONARY OF CRIME AND VISIONARY OF CLING AND LOYAL TO HIS BASTARD DADY. WHEN YOU GROW UP ( ENDA SEWA ) ALL WAYS SUMTHING RONG WITH YOU BRAINE. IF WAS NAIZGI FROM ANSABA OR AKALEGUZAY THIS NEVER HAPEN TO HIM I FILL SOREY TO THE SERAYE LOW LIFE ( AKATERTI ).

  • ዘመን March 1, 2012

I wonder people x tegadaly wanted to chapen himself! U should know that Isayas knows no region, awraja, religion or sect. He only wants people who serve him. After their service he discards them like he did to Naizgi. Look at the bootlickers of Isayas, they are from every region even if their number may flactuate with the political situation of the country and with tehir loyalty to the despot. So, do not lower yourself to the base and rubish mentality of narrow regionalism. By doping so you are just turning yourself like the gdefite regionalists. All those who try to lebel anyone with a region are opportunits, they do not care about the region they claim to represent.

I UNDERSTAND YOUR POINT AND I NOW HE DOESN’T CARE HO YOU ARE OR WHERE YOU FROM. MY POINT IS TO THE SUPORTER’S OUT SIDE THE COUNTRY THOES HO PAYS 2%. NOT BECAUSE THEY LIKE THERE COUNTY LETS KIP IT REAL. I WAS THE ORGANZER AND I WORK WITH HIM

I am confused of this article. I have got great lesson from this episod, I am sure this blind issais supporters will learn a good listen. If you read ‘Animal Farm’ this what is happening in this case. Napoline [pig] kill most of the animals including his main supporter [boxer]. Finally after boxer died, Napolin sold him to human being. This is exactly what Issais is doing. Lets follow what will come next. The other most suprising is the interview Mesfin had with voa. Listen and analyse.

    Mr Amare,
I am one of the readers of your many articles and appreciate most of them, but not this one. Ato Amare Eb giberu. You don’t give a person credit because of the relationship that you had or have. Call him by the name that he deserves. You can’t rewrite history of anyone, whether you like him or otherwise. We Eritreans respect a dead person but we don’t forget what he did. It will be a lesson book not only for the current but for all generations to come. Mr Naiszgi and his likes owe a lot to the Eritrean people not the other way around.
Are you going to write the same for the dictator as well?
One of my reasons that I, personally, don’t want to join the traditional opposition groups, is that you don’t have a principle that goes beyond all narrowly-founded relationships. My only hope is from the young generation that own un-polluted mind set.

    • Cambo March 1, 2012

      Almaz,
Eritrea’s hope are mainly the unpolluted and unspoiled young Eritrean minds opposing the tyrant and his counters of the older generation hidden somewhere in the name of “opposition” who were propping up the chief Halewa Sewras in Hgdef and Jebha.
Many of the young generation are opposing rightly, regardless of ones religion, ethnicity or political inclination. They are only motivated by justice.
Like Naizgi Kiflu, I had also seen many in the opposition praising the murderer Idris Abdela and many killers like him who burned villages and killed young students no less than the Janjawids of Sudan.
Lets call a spade a spade to all murderers and genociders of Eritrea regardless of their ethnicity, religion or Adi.
Our motive should be just justice.
This does not mean that any dead Eritrean should be denied a small guguad meqabr.

Dear readers, I appreciate your comments. I think anything we write we present should be balanced based on facts. I wrote in memory of Naizghi the pros and cons of his life, and that should be the way we act as democrats. Let us try to see it that way when we write about PFDJ leaders.
    Regards.

Pen smart, time to move on. Forget NAIZGI and kill the vampire and we all will be free.

We can discuss and express our views but by now wake-up smell the coffee. I think they
distort our minds and we forgot the value of our religions and tradition. For God Sake
let the body rest and leave to ALMIGHTY take care his soul what he deserve.
For those who want to clean the names of evil-doers I say you are dead wrong. (Betri Haki –

the dirty ones on their circle .
