EU and UN propping up the repressive regime in Eritrea are morally wrong.

By Petros Tesfagiorgis

First of all I express my sadness for the kidnap of innocent Amhara students in Dembi Dolo University, Oromo region. It is a gross human rights violation and should be condemned unequivocally.

Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister of Ethiopia in April 2018 and he wasted no time to announce his agenda of peace.  Soon he made peace with Eritrea.  When PM Abiy released all political prisoners and extended amnesty to all the opposition movements mostly based in Eritrea, there was hope that Isaias will follow Abiy’s footsteps. But the repression in Eritrean continued unabated.  Abiy Ahmed showed no concern about the pains and suffering of the Eritrean people to the extent that he lobbied for Eritrea to become a member of the UN commission of human rights.  The UN allowed this to happen ignoring the report of its inquiry commission which concluded that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that crimes against humanity have been committed in Eritrea since 1991. (1)

With such powerful evidences the UN should have brought Isaias to the International court of justice. The EU, on its part, gave Eritrea $22 million for road construction using forced/slave labour.

It has become crystal clear that For Dictator Isaias   Afworki,   Abiy Ahmed, EU and the UN the life of the people of Eritrea does not matter. They are all in bed together in perpetuating the human rights violations in Eritrea. In this case the EU and UN are abandoning their responsibility of defending victims of gross human rights violations.

Today Eritreans at home and in Diaspora are facing exceptionally challenging odds. The fundamental question is what can be done? The Diaspora living in the Democratic countries of the West can exploit the freedom of expression in those countries and launch concerted and well organized appeal and protests   against the decision of the EU and the UN.  In these endeavour The Eritrean Mass Movement (Yiakl)   can play a leading role.

The EU gave Eritrea $22 million for road construction using forced/slave labor.  The decision caused outrage in human – rights circles.

The New York Times in its article titled “How Forced Labor in Eritrea Is linked to EU- funded Projects wrote “As it aims to stem the flow of migrants from Africa and bring about change in a dictatorship, the European Union is spending millions on projects in forced conscription,”

January 8, 2020: By Martina Stevie-Gridneff:  BRUSSELS – The European Union spent 20 million euros last year in Eritrea, hoping to help stem an exodus from the repressive African country, which is consistently one of its biggest sources of asylum seekers.

January 23,2020 – Martin Plaut – Eritrea: EU News:  The EU Parliament’s Rapporteur to the Committee on Budgetary Control, Michele Rivasi has released a report in which she asks critical questions about the use of Eritrean conscripts in EU funded road projects.

All these shows that the people of Eritrea are not alone.  There are people the world over who advocates for justice, democracy and peace.  What is missing in this outrage is the voice of Eritreans in Diaspora. Their voice could have been the catalyst for more international    support.

We the Eritreans have a just cause. We are witnessing the EU and UN empowering a dictator instead of empowering people. The Eritrean just seekers have to be guided by conventional wisdom of “power to the people that symbolizes the struggle for democracy and justice.

The EU can even be sued and the United Nations can be exposed through worldwide demonstrations and lobbies.

Eritrea Focus is concerned about this issue.   On 23 January 2020 Eritrea Focus has distributed the APPG (All Party Parliament Group on Eritrea Press release).  APPG has elected new chair and came up with more members. On its part it is raising timely issues in the parliament. I quote from the press release.

For Immediate Release

“ Yesterday afternoon Kate Osamor MP was announced as the newly elected Chair of the APPG for Eritrea. Kate brings her experience as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development and as long time Chair of the APPG for Nigeria.

The APPG has already spoken to the UK Ambassador to Eritrea and has invited the Eritrean Ambassador to Parliament for a frank private discussion on areas of concern and potential cooperation.

The APPG has also invited Human Rights Watch and academic experts on Eritrea to give evidence in Parliament on indefinite military conscription in the next few weeks. The officers hope to begin formal hearings in an enquiry on UK/Eritrean relations in the near future.”

The question is what next?    The Eritrean people at home and in Diaspora are expecting to see action by just seekers who claim to be “the voice of the voiceless”. I have written two articles recommending protests and demonstrations when the 22 health centres run by the Roman Catholic Church were closed. Some commentators said “demonstrations and lobbies are diversion from the real mission of getting rid of the repressive regime.” This is gross misunderstanding.  In democratic countries demonstrations, protests and campaigns are the main tool of struggle.  Here are 2 successful examples.

  1. In 1982 the EPLF got an ear that the Soviet Union is to supply the Ethiopian Military Junta (Derg) nerve gas to use against the EPLF. The mass association in UK organised a big demonstration.  Dr Stuart Holland– a labour MP has taken the responsibility to raise the issue with the Soviet Union. As member of the International socialist he had an access to authorities in Moscow.  (See photo). Although the fighters made gas masks   there was no sign of any gas.  Dr Stuart Holland – wrote a book titled “Eritrea- Never Kneel down “on his return from his visit in the field.

  1. Last year during the 41th session of the UN commission of human rights there was a strong lobby by PFDJ and supporters – to pass a motion to end the work of Special Rapporteur, Daniela Kravetz (Chile) who replaced Sheila B. Keetharuth in October 2018. Many International human rights activist and Eritrean organizations frantically lobbied representative of many countries to reject the motion. They then prepared a protest letter signed by 31 organizations to the United Nations. The impact was huge and it was a success. The majority vote was in favor of   letting the Special Rapportier continue her work.

Protest Action is a potent weapon in a struggle for justice. However engagement with the right audience in the right way is a key to success. This time the engagement is very specific it is with EU and UN. Also campaign to rescue refugees stranded in Libya is essential as well as helping refugees suffering from depression. In UK alone 4 youth have committed suicide within 2 years. Recently one youth committed suicide in Switzerland.

EU and UN propping up the repressive regime in Eritrea is morally wrong. To protest and demonstrate is the right thing to do.

To continue

Beyond the feeling of déjà vu, both Abiy and Isaias in 2020 are entering dangerous unchartered territory to subjugate the TPLF and consolidate the power of Isaias to continue repression. The people of Eritrea have shunned Isaias and are establishing a power mass movement to get rid of him. In such a situation the alliance of the people of Eritrea and Tigray is critical and it is the only way forward. Together they can be the tower of strength to frustrate the evil design of the two friends and pave the way for justice, peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia one hand and respect the sovereignty of Eritrea on the other.  However the Eritrean civil and political organisation has to be bold enough to make a stand.  Thus the cooperation of TPLF and EPLF to defeat the huge army of the “Derg” during the long years of armed struggle is an inspiration that can be emulated.  They are strategic allies.

“Thus the cooperation of TPLF and EPLF to defeat the huge army of the “Derg” during the long years of armed struggle is an inspiration that can be emulated. They are strategic allies.” >>>>>> aren’t we trying to undo the mayhem that was caused by this alliance today, the Eritrean people didn’t need any foreign intervention to achieve their goal, they already had 3/4 of their nation liberated in late 1970’s until the incursion of a foreign army in our soil,Mr. Petros , it looks like you trying to put back on a soiled surgical gloves you threw in the bin and continue operating on the patient. As a prolific activist you know better.

Dear my friend K. tewolde :
With due respect, we Eritreans do not live in an Island. What is happening in our neighbors Ethiopia, Sudan, Yemen, Egypt etc affects the people of Eritrea as well. Countries choose friends and allies with those who share same values and similar ideologies. They do join hands to avert common threat. Eritrea and Tigray has a common threat to their survival.
In the name of peace but not for peace Isaias has become a partner of Abiy in the conspiracy of eroding the sovereignty of Eritrea. At the same time he is allying with Abiy and the Amhara extremists, who do not accept the independence of Eritrea, in encircling and isolating Tigray. Such confrontation is of a type that brings more division and bloodshed in Ethiopia. And I tell you if wars erupt, it is time bomb for Eritrea as well. We justice seekers have to declare that the people of Eritrea has nothing to do with these unholy alliances.
The alliance of TPLF and EPLF in the fight a against the Dergue ended Amhara supremacy in Ethiopia on one hand and brought Eritrean independence on the other hand. I lived and struggled through those times and it was a victory against all odds. The mayhem you are taking about is because the people of Eritrea are betrayed by Isaias and colleague and we are too weak and divided to fight back.

‘I lived and struggled through those times and it was a victory against all odds.’…with all due respect brother Pete, you are preaching to the wrong choir,so did I.>>>>> ‘encircling and isolating Tigray.’,wait a minute, are you using TPLF and the people of Tigray interchangeably?and EPLF and the Eritrean people? may be HGDEF and the Eritrean people too? these are political organizations and these entities come and go and some of them evolve in some forms and some become victims of hostile takeover and some go through political phagocytosis as evidenced by our history, and they have never been representatives of the entire population. The inability to distinguish between a political organization and a country or an entire population is where the political nystagmus starts,it is within this distorted view where the roots of dictatorship and authoritarian mentality is nourished.>>>>>>>> ((we Eritreans do not live in an Island.))..you are right,no we don’t,however we don’t have to embrace an old foe(a clique) who contributed to our current demise and profited from it, don’t confuse it with Hizbi Tigray, in order to survive. (((we are too weak and divided to fight back.))) this statement speaks volumes, you don’t believe in you and your brothers and sisters and you looking for an outsider instead, you have conceded,Eritrean people were not betrayed by the impostor as you said because he was not one of them,he is a vector who brought disease and infected our homeland and his virulence has crippled already 2 generations.

        Dear K. Tewolde,
“We are too weak and divided to fight back” (Petros Tesfagiorgis). ” This statement speaks volumes ” K. Tewolde. Yes indeed my brother. Yes indeed!!

I wish to come back with few words because me luck correct input to speak frankly / honestly address what happened on the era of our struggle and now. All is waste pin that may say something. Indeed, the core problem is emperialism of Ethiopia. The well known puppets are EPLF & TPLF. Am talking to key holders. Eritrea as a nation post struggle should have addapted the policy of neutralità otherwise, Sudan or Yemen were the appropriate countrs to deal with but not Ethiopia. Therfore, brother tewelde and petros please don’t fight with glove or cissorrs because the dust ( tempesta ) comes always come from Ethiopia unfortunately.

Let’s all forget looking back and focus forward instead. Our sole aim should be how to remove the dictator from power – the rest is trivial stuff we can worry about at our leisure. Our country is at stake and the very fabric of Eritrean society is being destroyed.

Force is all we need to restore our dignity and preserve our nation. How to create that force should be our focus and concern 24/7.

It is high time to stop talking about the struggle (although we must never forget our martyrs) and the narcissist in Asmara, but focus on how save our country from destruction instead. We need a resistance force in action – all else is simply hot air.

    Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

    Dear Eritreans,

Every one of those who are right now leaving no stone unturned to undo Eritrean independence and decimate it’s people, including isaias afewerk, abraha kasa, hagos kisha, yemane monkey, yemane gebremeskel etc. …… are performing their evil deeds wearing EPLF masks. Therefore, having been with EPLF ought not be a Carte blanche for Eritrawnet any longer. No No, the time is calling us to be vigilant, to separate the grain from the chaff and to unmask the masked villain.

If the aforementioned people, all of tigrai descent but all former EPLFs, born and raised in Eritrea , except one, can betray Eritrean people and their Sovereignty, to advocate for TPLF alliance in the struggle of saving our country from utter destruction can only be a treacherous advice.

Would any genuine Eritrean take the impostor isaias afewerk and cabals for the enemy of TPLF/woyane/tegaru? I do not think so. If there are any, they must be gullible beyond redemption because to hold such folly is to belive TPLF is anti TPLF,which is a contradiction.

Please, please, we must not take the deceptive rethoric that has been raging between the impostor isaias afewerk and woyane for the truth. No No. It is all theatrical and drama to break our backbones by setting us against each other.

  • Asmara Eritrea February 4, 2020

Reading the above exchanges tempts me drain every drop of Eritrean blood from my veins.

I wonder what mistake I have committed to be born Eritrean. How do I become un-Eritrea? Please help!

  • Petros Tesfagiorgis February 4, 2020

Dear Asmara Eritrea: Don’t be discouraged. All these exchange of words will not break your bones. Yes it is sad the focus of this article is side lined whether it is deliberately or innocently. The focus is to challenge the EU and UN who are ignoring the repression in Eritrea and strengthen the hand of the dictator to engage them in road works not as paid workers but as part of the national service free/slave labor. The article is about action – it is about the real pains and suffering of the people of Eritrea.

  • Tewelde Gebremariam February 5, 2020

    Dear Eritreans,

    1. …….. Who deported hundreds of thousands of law abiding and innocent Eritreans and Ethiopians of Eritrean origin from Ethiopia, bestially and purposely condemning infants to die by separating them from their mothers; bestially and purposely condemning diabetic people to die by taking away their insulin; shipped them in completely sealed cars and dropped them in no man’s land etc.?

Aren’t they the ungrateful TPLFs, whom we had fed them, trained them, armed them, protected from Dergi, and after we crushed and scraped Dergi and its surrogates, the soviets, from our land, carried and installed them as government in Ethiopia?

    2. Aren’t these treacherous TPLFs, who, soon after we concluded the 1993 National Referendum, in collaboration with the TPLF within our midst…..impostor isaias afewerk and co…… started the border instigation as a prelude to the 1998 war?

    Yes, they are them!

    3. Isn’t the refusal of TPLF to abide by the Final and Binding decision of the Eritrean Ethiopian Border commission an affirmation of its bestial and treacherous character?

    Yes, absolutely!

Isn’t it then obvious that any one who advises us to make strategic alliance with such proven treacherous and untrustworthy organization , as TPLF, is covertly looking for our demise?

Yes, that is the case. And specially so in view of those TPLFs within our midst, masquerading as Eritreans!

    My Genuine Eritreans,

We must remain vigilant and specially so from those who profess their Eritrawnet with words but think and act to our demise. As they say, he/she who forgets the past relives it.

    • k.tewolde February 5, 2020

Amen Mr. Tewelde, one stayed north and the other south of the border they divided their empire and started ruling same clan related intermarried,my sister is a perfect example her small business and property confiscated was loaded in a truck like an animal with only cloth she had on her back was dropped off at the border soon after she was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to the disease, these are outlaws who came wearing shida from the woods and ended up wearing suits and designer shoes by evicting hardworking Eritreans from their homes, this scenario was duplicated by the same ruling clique in our homeland,it is just like the old days they go to somebodies village round the cattle and take off with them,HGDEF/TPLF are the same they look alike, talk and walk alike even smell the same and their alliance was and is the deadly superfecta of the Eritrean people.>> ‘he/she who forgets the past relives it.’ Tewelde, we are living the nightmare,I just want wake up from it.

  • hagos netsanet February 5, 2020

Could one prescribe aspirin as a cure for cancer ? In the Drs. Eritrean elites , the answer I am afraid is YES !!! So we continue to pressure the EU & UN as a solution for our delimma ? Why did n’t we think of that before . Are we so delusional or this is DENILE as a coping mechanism. We need to face reality..THERE IS NO ERITREA….except as a cadaver….We need to wake up and smell the western coffee.
