By Aaron Maasho

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Two little known Eritrean rebel groups said on Friday they had killed 12 government soldiers in an early morning attack.

The Red Sea Afar Democratic Organisation (RSADO) and the Eritrean National Salvation Front said they carried out the raid on Thursday in Kermed, Adi Metras, Ingra Abo, Adi Tela’a and Meshal Akran, all in southern Eritrea.

“The enemy units were engaged for nearly two hours,” the groups claimed in a statement.

“They suffered both human casualties and material losses that included 12 dead and more than 15 wounded, in addition to various types of military hardware.”

The claims were the first since last year when RSADO said it killed 17 intelligence agents and wounded another 37 in an attack on army barracks.

There was no immediate comment from the Eritrean government but authorities in Asmara often dismiss foreign-based opponents as “puppets” acting under the orders of foreign governments.

Eritrea accuses arch-foe Ethiopia of working to destabilise the Red Sea state, while Addis Ababa declared openly in April that it would support Eritrean rebels in a bid to oust President Isaias Afewerki’s administration.

RSADO says its operations are in response to Asmara’s refusal to grant autonomy to the Afar, whose homeland straddles Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

You can express your self, it is your right of freedom of speech. But do you need all
this bad language. Keep in mind, you are only disrespecting yourself acting that way.

  • Barentu October 22, 2011

Haben, you wrote “Agame … lementi” First of all, “Agame” is just a district name of a very hard working people in Tigrai. For your information, President Isaias is 100% originally from Tembien, Tigrai. Including most of his advisers such as Yemane Monkey, Hagos Kisha, Yemane Charlie, his security chief Abraha Kasa, Tekle Manjus … and many

PIA is 100% Agame while Melese is 65% Eritrean do u know this, if you are talking about their roots.Of course there is no question PIA is Eritrean.I think we guys should know what it means Eritrean, because most of the tigrigna are hailed from Tigray, Gondor or Wello. It is uncivilized that is why we need a constitution, or unless we gone end up in tribalism and regionalism. If this trend continues the Tigrigna does not have a sea access, either it is Afar land or Shao or Tigre.

Meles understand the regionalism of the Kebessa, that is why he supports political organization based on ethnic or religion as it weakness the Eritrean nationalism.

    emhar,
The only pride I have seen among the opposition are the Afars and Kunamas who are very proud of their own languages, heritage and identities. Some in the opposition are even ashamed to speak and sing in their own languages in the demonstrations against Hgdef. I give some credit too, to some Tigrinias who have pride in their languages, identities and songs.
If you have real and worthy identity, why do you need a white fascist European to tell you about your map, identity, zobas and cherqi?
You said about old “Higi endabas”, leave that to historians and archeologists to dig and worry about. Lets worry about justice, democracy and fairness now. There may be some good starting points in some Higi endabas, as there are outdated, unjust, and old Higiendabas in some.
Think modern, efficient and accountable ways to govern, not too old ideas. We need to grow up and move forward. Forget the past, learn to move forward.
If you are “proud of Higi endaba”, why did you burn text books written in Tigre? Why are you ashamed of your Tigre-Tigrinia? If you are proud of your past identity and history, why do you worry about an Italian invented fascist map? Why do you worry about a blue Cherqi handed to you by the UN’s Antze Matheonzos?
Identity! What identity do you have except slavery for others? Is kneeling down to Arabs an identity?

    • Semhar October 24, 2011

      Barentu,
We are all proud of our language, culture, nationality and our heritage.
      Hgdef burned the textbooks.
Highi Indaba (the law of our land in Eritrea), it gives all Eritreans at their father’s village the rite to own a land for farming and a land to build your house for free. That has been and will always be the law of our land. For those who are born outside Eritrea there will be land reserved for them at their father’s village when they return home. This land cannot be sold or exchanged. We only can pass it to the next generation.
      Barentu,

Yes we will stop you and HIGDEF from taking land that belong to Afar, Kunama and other nationalities in Barka, Denkel and allover Eritrea’s provinces.
Those of you who are taking our people’s land and our property illegally you will pay the price just like Colonel Gaddafi Soaked in blood and looking empty eyed into the camera lens –soon will be your image.

      Haben,
Isayas is Ethiopian mercenaries who was sent by his uncle Degezmach Solomn Abraham (former governor of Wollo, Ethiopian province) and Asratekassa (former governor of Eritrea) to dissolve Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF).

Isayas successfully dissolved not only ELF but also EPLF and replaced by his own organization HIGDEF.

He changed our national flag, the flag of our martyrs and replaced it by his own HGDEF flag.

He dissolved our PROVINCES and replaced them by his own ZOBAS.

Gaddafi is dead Isayas is next!
      – His boss (Mubarak of Egypt) is thrown out of power.
      – The international community’s talking peace and carrying big stick [sanctions] is having an effect.
      – The Eritrean people are beginning to realize that there is no point in waiting for the regime to reform itself — that it needs to be overthrow.

    Haben:
stop bleming everything to Woyane or for these who oppose Isayas regime.
Haben: think out of the box, dont move only within a single circle:
are you going to tell us that Eritrea is growing fast?
are you going to tell us that these thousands of Eritrean in Mai-Ayni and in the Afar reginal state go there for relax?
are you going to tell us that Eritrea has freedom of speech, freedom of religion, democracy, justice?
if anyone who is in power is not working for the good will of the people, he is not an angle he must leave his power.
dont fool yourself by pretending as you are patriotic hero…
you are serving the tyrant regime… while your families, friends and your people as a whole are fleeing our country?
so dont fool yourself.. wake up and stand for your people.
as you know Gadafi was one of the best friend of isayas, he is dead, actually isayas is the next
