Eritrea blames US for Ethiopian attacks; US denies

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Eritrea's president said Monday that attacks on targets inside his tiny Horn of Africa nation by its archrival Ethiopia was the "handiwork of Washington." Ethiopia said on March 15 it attacked

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Eritrea’s president said Monday that attacks on targets inside his tiny Horn of Africa nation by its archrival Ethiopia was the “handiwork of Washington.”

Ethiopia said on March 15 it attacked three military posts inside its northern neighbor Eritrea. The country said it launched the attack because Eritrea was training “subversive groups” that carried out attacks inside Ethiopia.

President Isaias Afwerki said in a statement sent Monday from Eritrea’s Ministry of Information that “last week’s so-called attack is basically the U.S. Administration’s plan emanating from frustration.” Isaias said the attack evolved out of a “failed agenda” to disturb Eritrea’s “independent path” and “bright economic prospects.”

Eritrea routinely accuses the U.S. of overlooking abuses by Ethiopia, a key U.S. ally in the region in its war against terrorism. Both the U.S. and Ethiopia denied the allegations. The U.S. Embassy said in a statement posted on its website that it “rejects any allegations that it planned, participated in, or supported the attack.”

Ethiopia’s minister of communications Bereket Simon said the U.S. was “not at all” involved in the attacks. He said Ethiopia was acting on its own and out of self-defense. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a border war from 1998 to 2000 in which about 80,000 people died. Bereket said Ethiopia “won’t allow a war situation” to occur.

Eritrea also said it won’t go to war over the attacks. The Red Sea nation, with a population of about 5 million people, does not receive foreign aid and is sanctioned by the United Nations because of human rights violations. U.N. reports have indicated that Eritrea has supported the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab in Somalia. Eritrea denies those allegations.

Here is how chief Tsehaye Tewelde remembers the late Melake Tekle who was murdered by the notorious gujle Abdela Idris.
May the people who know enlighten us by documenting the past, for all the crimes committed by Jebha and Hgdef.

      Cambo,

I listened to the radio. Meskerem.net and the guy (Tsehaye) are lekhbaTat self-serving individuals whose motto in life is “Z’negese N’gusna, Z’bereqe Tsa’Hayna”. They would do anything to be on the limelight for it serves their little pathetic ego. As for Mel’Ake Tekhle, it is great to see him immortalized in the annals of history.

      • Cambo March 27, 2012

        Gebre,
you are calling them “lekhbaTat self-serving… ” for remembering an Eritrean who was murdered by some criminal wing and terrorist elements of Jebha? How would you like them to remember him on the 30th year of his death?
I never remeber reading your comments here before, but If you know the meaning of “lekhbaT” describes you “Gebre” better than anybody elses here. Shut up!

          Cambo,

Read my last line again. I said, as for Mel’Ake Tekhle, it is great to see him immortalized in the annals of history. Before you haste to make comments, read first with an intent. I was merely reflecting on their shoddy and lekhbaT character where they would do anything to be on the spot light. No wonder, Meskerem.net is dubbed Wedogeba.net.

There are many “LekhbaT character” or hypocrites everywhere including in Awate website, even here.
Nothing new here, but no one should be allowed to discount the story in the name of the “messenger”.

but this is not new, he accusing US for the last 10 years, i don’t know what the purpose of his last week interviews??? it’s okey, he made a right decision not to react on ethiopias attack, i hope he will continue to be reasonable. So there was no need for his interview, instead he should have addressed Naizghi’s issue.

    R u healthy Mr. President?
    AH..Plz get medication.

  • gerimuna March 27, 2012

I listened the whole interview. Although he is sixty five and still,I did not expect any fruitful ideas; but at least one directed answer to any of the interviewer’s questionnaire. Nada!!!!!!!!!!! I learned one thing, he uses the media to entertain himself how he challenged the US and frustrated them and hence get mad and attack him using “Weyane” as proxy. It sounds as children’s fiction book story. Is FIA telling us “weyane” are imbecile? They are afraid to do it themselves. Poor America!!!!!!!! All the questions he answered was stress to that effect. This justifies to me he is not normal as we use to idol him fifteen years ago and sounds himself bitter that he lost all the respect and love he garnered by deceit to Mai Bela for good as his master Gaddaffi.

  • gerimuna March 27, 2012

    To HGDFites :
I am wondering!!!!!!!!!! Are you still supporting him? Of course him and obviously not the Eritrean people ? Big mistake!!!!!!!! that you will regret as I was one of the ardent supporter and regret it immensely now. No more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you follow me as Eritreans inside and outside except few opportunists like you.

    • sara March 27, 2012

No wonder … you were only an ardent “supporter”, not a full member, and that was fifteen years a go. i could imagine you only became “supporter” sometime after may 1991. i don’t blame you , i blame those who helped you be a supporter , they didn’t help you make the transformation from a sympathizer/supporter to real member/munadel or tekalasay. it takes a lot of work to help one do the transformation, and i am wondering those who were with you gave up on you …may be,,,i am saying may be… they realized early you will not make it… you didn’t have what is needed to go to that level. I think they were right, and it is obvious from what you wrote.
      good luck!

    This has little additional information.

    • ahmed saleh March 27, 2012

Reading the additional information you refered, the writer said Issaias
is suffering with severe liver desease. Last time he went to Qatar for
two weeks treatment. Is that true or not nobody knows.

  • Mr.suspy March 27, 2012

This fool Eritrean president involved himself in Somalia siding with Alshabab because not he is intersted to help Somalis but for his own reasons that is to hurt Ethiopia through Alshabab. But does he know by arming alshabab at same he was making the biggest powers to turn againist him.was he thinking about that? He was palying that game and now what diffrence does it make if US plays its game, Iseayas palyed his turn and now it is US turn to make the move just like you are playing a chess. You got to take turn that is how it goes. I would say Mr.president don’t cry !! just seat back enjoy the game and when it is your turn make your move.
