Reporters Without Borders has learned that the journalist Yirgalem Fisseha  Mebrahtu, incustody since her arrest in February 2009, was admitted to hospital in the Eritrean capital Asmara earlier this year. The organization is extremely worried about her state of health and concerned about the conditions under which she is being held.

“While the eyes of the world are on the bloodshed in Syria and the crackdown on the monks in Tibet who protest in dramatic fashion by setting themselves on fire, the fate of Eritrea continues to be greeted with indifference,” the press freedom organization said.

“However, its citizens are ruled by a government every bit as cruel as those in Damascus or Beijing. At least 32 journalists are in prison without charge and without trial, some for more than 10 years.

“The government of President Issaias Afewerki has already permitted the death in detention of at least four journalists. It issues no information on several others and it is not known whether they are still alive.  Today, it is the life of Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu that it is playing with.”

The organization deplored the apathy of the international community, which has accommodated itself to the tragedy in Eritrea since 2001.

According to information reaching Reporters Without Borders, Mebrahtu is in serious condition in Asmara’s Halibet hospital.

She has been admitted to the hospital twice, once last November and again in January this year. She is under permanent guard and is allowed no visitors. Her family and friends have not been told of the nature of her illness but her treatment requires the purchase of medication abroad.

A journalist and poet, she is originally from the southern city of Adi Keyih and was arrested during a raid on Radio Bana on 22 February 2009, during which its entire staff was detained (http://en.rsf.org/eritrea-plea-to-eu-to-suspend-development-06-03-2009,30491.html). She is supported by Reporters Without Borders and is sponsored by the organization’s Spanish section, as is her jailed fellow journalist Dawit Isaac.

In a rare piece of good news, Reporters With out Borders has learned that the journalist Said Abdulhai, arrested in March 2010, was released several months ago.

A veteran of the independence war against Ethiopia and a graduate of Libya’s University of Benghazi in the 1980s, he was one of the media department’s founders after independence. He has at various stages run the information ministry’s press department, the Eritrean news agency and the main pro-government newspaper, published in Tigrinya, English and Arabic. At the time of his arrest he was working for the foreign ministry and is now employed by the education ministry.

Some of her colleagues are still leaving the country to escape the dictatorship and possible arrest. The journalist Senay Gebremedhin, who worked for the Amharic-language service of the state radio station Dimtsi Hafash and the state television station Eri-TV and was employed by the information ministry for 14 years, relocated to neighbouring Ethiopia in January.

Another Eritrean journalist who wishes to remain anonymous for reasons of security and who fled at the same time as Gebremedhin, has contacted Reporters Without Borders to request assistance.

Sorry we do not have OIL. No one cares!

    • SINGAPO - ERITREAN April 7, 2012

BROTHER WELDU, It is not only oil ,that we do not have oil,we do not have conscious either. It isd not british or Canada women that are being raped in Sinai,it is not American people their kidneys being sold. I would not fight to save filipino people ,while filipinos are happy driving a cab …etc. Governments do not have friends ,just interests. Ethiopia is not kicking terrorist PFDJ´s ass to favor us, Eritreans .But if we were brave enough ,to be in charge of the war that Ethiopia is doing for it´s own advantage,it would have been win-win situation. I have Canadian & US citzenship ,and ,I would be against any of my adopting countries dying for nothing ,while only 300 eritreans go out for demonstration ,in a city that holds over 15000 eritreans.Brother Weldu, if we have to succeed ,we have to stop blaming others ,while we sit on our fat ass. do you know a good number of peopkle are againast “Woyane” punishing our terrorist govt., because of Ethiopians holding land temporarily.

      • jonas-1923@hotmail.com April 8, 2012

Genuine????????? hahaha , the reason CIA doesn’t kill Isayas is one tomwhak missile costs 100,000 US, it is not worth to fire it on a guy who costs 10 nakfa.

  • jonas-1923@hotmail.com April 6, 2012

Dictators do not like journalists, so Isayas Afecheka is no difference, in a democracy ,journalists are vital to make goverment accountable but in a dictatorship that is a treason. It is so curious why Isayas is so cruel, paranoid and repressive for the very country he spent all his life fighting for.I think it was all about power from the start.

  • esak April 6, 2012

Amanuel-Eiasu ; we don’t really consedered you as a jornalist any more. Because you did not do what a jornalst suppose to do .For example ; A jornalist supose to keep the truth; honesty accountablity ; accuracy and free from taking aside and you didn’t have non of that based what you betrayed one of your jeberti community .
Amanuel ; i just want to let you know and Eritrean people to know as well . It has been distrubeted to web cites the 65th of the Martyer Sheikh Abdulkadir-Awate (Allah yeramu peace be upon him) a few days a go; and some of the spoken contant by our brother mustafa has been cancelled out or delited . Especially in every word that says Jeberti . And those practice is not acceptable by us .So for the future i think you should stop such un proffetional practice for your own repetation

    • Baraee April 7, 2012

      Jemal,

Stop spewing your hate…keep it to yourself…Amanuel is not only a journalist but someone who could have his own political view…I will recognize him as a journalist once the system of governance exists with balance of power etc…At that time he can choose whether to be in governance, cititizenship, journalism period. I among many others appreciate his work in availing this media for Eritreans and yes, he did by far than most of websites…..His is more effective…..please bring an issue of subtance to debate than personally attack him.

    • Haile April 7, 2012

      Jemal,

You seem to be a narrow minded person with an ethnocentric attitude. Instead of expressing sympathy to the PFDJ victim, a poor Eritrean female journalist whose dire situation is posted here on assenna, you jumped to launch a clumsy attack on another Eritrean journalist who is doing his best to help his fellow Eritreans. Ammanuel Iyasu won’t need a certificate or recognition form an uneducated guy with unhealthy mind like you. He is a qualified journalist on paper and on the ground to handle issues with greater significance let alone the issue of jeberti which seems to be your obsession. The Eritrean people are aware of Ammanuel’s decency, honesty and hard work for the betterment of his people long time before you. So deal with your victim mentality on your own, and don’t waste your time if your intention is to tarnish his name and good work. He is way beyond your capacity.

      • Ahmed saleh April 8, 2012

        Jemal
ASSENNA posted about the celebration which took place. If you have
honest stance you should participate on dialogue then. It is irrelevant
to the subject above. If you feel Amaniel miss some points you think
is important, you are free to post it to highlight the case in question.
But to attack for no substantial reason will not take you nowhere. At
the same time your narrow minded approach to our political struggle
won’t help the cause. Those people in diaspora who preach ethnicity,
region and religion are the main obstacles on the advancement of our
common interest on this movement for political reform. We Eritreans
are searching for the means to implement the constitution to see our
people protected for their basic right. I wish you refrain yourself from
such kind contradictory remarks because it’s result is not constructive.

    • mikael tekle April 8, 2012

jemal you are a very narrow minded person. Abdel Kader Kebire died not only for the Jebertis but for all Eritreans. But some of u narrow minded you want to divide Eritrea in baskets of Jeberti, Kebesa , Bilen etc—- YOu are serving the interests of Issayas directly or indirectly. What Amanuel did was a perfect work of filtering the unneeded. So dont complain you just correct your mistakes.

      • Abdi April 8, 2012
