Nine members of the Eritrean National Football team, including the head coach Mr Omer Ahmed and team captain Haile Goitom abandon the dictatorial regime in Eritrea seeking political asylum in Kenya.

Two of them confirmed to demo.archive.assenna.com on the phone about their decision not to go back home to Eritrea. Samson was not able to continue his conversation, while another player who didn’t consent his name to be made public said “the endless national service, extreme repression and lack of freedom” was the main reason for his decision.

The Eritrean National Football team has been to Kenya to participate in the regional annual Cecafa competition.

Although the regime tried its best to minimize defection by calling many Eritrean semi and non professional players from abroad into the team, it couldn’t escape the embarrassment it faced for several times.

Two of the payers have been in hiding before the completion of the tournament, while the remaining 7 have just followed them.

12 members of the Eritrean national team have defected last year in Uganda, after participating in similar regional tournament. Almost all Red Sea football club players have also done the same prior to that.

Job well done team Eritrea, this is the only passport and visa an Eritrean can get to live peacefully in the civilized and democratic christian West. Our young Eritreans deserve this right.

Eritrea defined: the shame of Africa. It is a nation that sells its own citizens to Arab slavery, for sex trade and organ harvest.

Congratulations!!!, believe me you(players) never defected Eritrea and its people, but the barbaric regime who tortured you and your carreer for years and cause you to cut that sick bond once and for all. However, you are the ambassadors of Eritrea and its people where ever you are, expose the naked leader and his regime, show to the world how this barbaric regime is anti-humane and humanity.
ERitrea loves you and you are our heroes. Let the dictator and his cowardice be further isolated, despair and frustrated to the point of reaching world’s waste-product: discarded and despised. DEfinitely it hurts them agonisises them and you can see how cheap they are to treat you so cruely and not professionals.
Again congratulations, I wish for you unlimited success in your future and in your dreams as all of us youngsters in life.

Their deffection comes as no suprise to me. What is funny though the PFDJ supporters will hardly admit that all this abondoning of our beloved country is csused by the hardship of living conditions caused by their Emperor Isaias Afeworki. Ver Verysad

Defection visa is the only guaranteed Exit visa in Eritrea. It is self-made and it is free.

    • Mohammed December 9, 2013

I agree Said. This generation has failed Eritrea. We sought the riches of the West and left our brothers and sisters to develop the nation. We only wanted what those in the West had.
