The sad and unfortunate fate of the Eritrean youth such as Dejen Andehishel’s generation, also known as euphemistically, as the Warsai has been explained well by Yosief Ghebrehiwet in his most recent article: Disowning Eritrea: Owning the Regal Disease

    Disowning the youth

The disowning of the youth generation in independent Eritrea ominously starts with that Orwellian name given to them by the “liberators”: “Warsai”. No one in his right mind can possibly miss the cruel irony the name “Warsai” carries. As their “generously” given name indicates, the Warsai are indeed meant to be “inheritors,” a description that usually carries a positive connotation (one who inherits a debt can hardly be called an “inheritor”). But a closer look indicates that they are actually intended to inherit the worst: indefinite military service, one war after another, death in epic proportion, war disability, modern-day slavery, sexual abuse, educational deprivation, denial of family life, religious persecution, incarceration, internal exile, mass exodus and all the rest of oppression that the totalitarian leadership in Asmara offers. In other words, they are meant to be the proud inheritors of the Regal Disease, grandiosely baptized as “ghedli legacy” (hidri suwuatna).

Thus, the Warsai are not meant to inherit the fruits of the struggle (for there are none), but oddly enough, the struggle itself; or rather, all the hardships that the struggle offers. Given that the national service is designed to recreate all those ghedli hardships, with their blueprints derived directly from mieda, all the evils that have been stoking the Warsai have initially gained acceptability only when packaged under the ever-romanticized “struggle.” Once looked at through the lens of ghedli, one stops calling all the misery indexes mentioned above by their right names. Instead, they have tailor-made names, all taken out from old pages of mieda, that magically transform them into patriotic-sounding ones: martyrdom, sacrifice, fortitude, perseverance, challenge, steadfastness, courage, principle, iron-will, self-reliance, the can-do generation, the inheritors, legacy, etc. [meswaiti, bidho, tsina’t, bitsifrna, biqiltsmna, tetsewarnet, mekete, metkelna, ilamana, yikealo, warsai, hastinawi menfes, etc.] You can see how this yearning to possess the Regal Disease has made it impossible for many to see the farce that the name “Warsai” carries on timely basis, that being the precursor for all the horrors soon to follow.

Let me look at the above mentioned irony, that odd correlation, as applied to the most egregious crime that is now being committed against the youth generation – the mass exodus – and try to trace it to its totalitarian and colonial roots by asking this question: why are we not calling the mass exodus “genocide”? …

Assenna, you need to officially give proper apology to those families who you said that their loved ones had passed away in the notorious melaki’s prison.

Thanks mature Dejen for your brilliant first hand information. You are really mature hero. It won’t be long for justice to prevail in Eritrea. Well done! God be with you at all times.

witsae meat you sound snappy, Assena is doing favior to Eritrean people. Be respectful we need to learn from the past.

    • Verify May 26, 2014

Apology ? Assenna to the family ?

Can you please elaborate what it meant by that ?

PFDJ / and his brianless slaves of the party must apologize to the family .

If you are talking about legality of the news , the families already know what happened to thier beloved sons & daughters .

Better focus what you can do than going about it .

      witsae meat,
really?? if you were patient enough to listen to “the first half” of part 5 of the interview, Mr Amanuel Eyasu first genuinely expressed his delight that the victims are still alive and then went on to apologize profusely to relatives and everyone else about the mistakes which were made. in fact, the interviewer and the interviewee discussed the issue in great detail. they discussed why such problems occur and how and what the impact of those news is on those detained without charge for years on end. i am wondering whether you have a six months old child’s memory span. here i would like to applaud the HERO DEJEN ANDE HISHEL (Sebar-Carchielli) for understanding the circumstances Assenna staff have to do media work. you witsae meat however are demanding that Assenna officially “give proper apology to those families who…” seriously witsae meat? i smell pooh (pfdj) here. do you expect Amanuel Eyasu to appear on eri-tb to apologize? is that the only media which represents “official” to you? let me tell you something: Assenna as Eritreans who are volunteering their everything to give Eritreans the news that eseyas wants to stay under the rug need to be admired not accused. if you are in the accusing mode accuse eseyas the dictator who has put the Eritrean HEROES in prison for demanding that our constitution be implemented. while you are there look at yourself in the mirror and ask what you are doing. fault finding won’t get you anywhere. you are a wolf in sheep skin but you fool no one here on Assenna b/s we are alert. we are very good at examining people like you who try to discredit Assenna. by the way witsae meat, your master is feeling the heat under his seat (it is burning). so i just wanted to tell you to stay focused because he may be ready to run to north korea (to ask for asylum) while you are still on duty. poor witsae maet, i pity you.

    Dear Pilot Dejen!
Having listened to your interviews: one can justifiably remember Mandela and envisage you at the top of public office in our beloved country. Resilient, eloquent, mature, courageous!

    Meanwhile:
    1. Stay safe from the pfdj operatives.
    2. Detox from the traumatic experience inflicted on you in the long years
    3. Prepare yourself for public office in democratic Eritrea.

Assenna: I beg you to keep the interviews on top of your page for long time. If possible distribute these interviews on CD…Eventually Pilot Dejen should be encouraged to use youtube and TV channels to communicate his story.

May God give you good health and long life! Amen

    • sina May 26, 2014

I agree and share the idea with you
      Thank you

    • Wedi Tororonto May 26, 2014

      Amen to that!

I really hope and pray that Dejen is safely whisked away to a country where his safety can be guaranteed. The mafia chief and his minions will do everything possible to silence this breath of a fresh air.

Save Dejen by all means necessary, for he may be what the doctor ordered for our ailing Eritrea!

  • asmeret May 26, 2014

Dear Amanuel what you doing is greatly appericeted, I always have problem with crule merceless pi and after I follow the interview I got sick in the stomch cried, I hope all Eritrean know about this and to work together and safe our people. It is naïve to expect from Issayas fairness. The struggle should continue for the respect of law and constitution.
Issayas was dictator from the beginning of the struggle. The prison system was implemented from day one Shabia organization.
If you do not know I am telling what happened to me. I am alive witness.

  • haile May 26, 2014

one thing i noticed about Dejen’s interview is he had recorded everything in his mind knowing one day he will be free and expose the evil dictator. Thank you Dejen.

  • ahmed saleh May 27, 2014

Screwed up situation from the top to the bottom.
The probability of an older age person to survive the harsh condition in prison is slim .
Therefore to expect the worst is normal reaction especially in the case of secretive system .
Blame nobody except the government which left us behind wondering in search of information .
Dejen explained the health conditions of those imprisoned veterans to show the whole picture
to the question of their long term survival chances .
Since the official media lost its credibility , the resources of Eritrean news become dependent
on rumors or civilians mouth .
