I listened to Hurui Tedla Bairu’s interview with great interest. It is very good that he has written a book on Eritrea and shared his own perspective about the evolution and culmination of Eritreans’ struggle for independence. There are a number of divergent narratives about the history of the armed struggle for independence., each narrative sugar coated by subtle twists to fit the authors’ own partisan agenda.. Those publications that can legally be circulated in Eritrea seem to tout the EPLF’s version of the story while those works that are hit by GOE’ s censorship normally reverberate the view point of the “opposition”. And the truth lies somewhere in between these two versions of the historical narratives.. Hurui comes from a political family because his father was the Chief Executive Officer of Eritrea during the Ethio=Eritrean federation era. As an historian Hurui can have the leverage of being privy to Eritrean political developments of the late fifties to early seventies. due to his family background. But at the same time, his background, and especially his proclivity to paint his Father’ image with a positive shade, seems to come as a liability for his rationality and credibility.. And that is very noticeable when you hear what he has to say about the “Mahber Fikri Hager”. There are countless Eritreans that maintain that Tedla Bairou was played into the hands of shrewd Shoan Aristocrats, like Aklilu Habtewold, who cleverly arm twisted him to hand over Eritrea to Imperial Ethiopia. Imperial Ethiopia discarded Tedla after the annexation because he rendered himself redundant because he failed to project the end game of the Ethiopians.. Many Eritreans believe that Tedla Bairu was to Eritrea as Uncle Sam is to African Americans, Uncle Sam being the symbolic African American who dances to the tune of White America in prejudice to the interests of the African-American population. Hurui seems to be unable to shake off this dark spot in Eritrean history because the main culprit for it was his own father. On the other hand he seems to have a problem with considering political giants like Aboy Woldeab Woldemariam who is often revered as “The Father of Eritrean Revolution”. Hurui seems to be reticent to acclaim WolWol as impeccable Eritrean hero. My recommendation for Hurui is to revisit this segment of his version of Eritrean history and come up with a more plausible explanation. Other than this, I really admire Hurui for his intellectual intensity and tenacity in trying to stay relevant to Eritrean politics even at his late age. Bravo Hurui.. . … .

Correction: “Uncle Sam” to read “Uncle Tom” in my above commentary
